So it turns out the zootopia we know today wasnt the original draft. The original draft involved a shock collar for predators which was legally required for all of them to have it on at all times. This shock collar was used to suppress their emotions so they dont go out of control and try to eat/attack the prey, however the shock collar only recognises strong emotions, not whether the emotion is happy or sad, so prefators get shocked if they become too happy or too sad as well. This actually makes predators the suppressed community, to the point other animals bully predators, like startling them and causing the collar to shock them. One day when nick gets in an accident, he goes to the hospital where they remove his collar while they diagnose him. When his collar is removed for the first time in years, Nick is allowed to feel unbound joy, smiling ear to ear for the first time. But the collar comes back on and Nick misses that feeling. Here he gets the idea he can start a business in the form of an amusement park for predators. The park functions with a hospital as a front so they can remove the collars legally, and the animals can go enjoy themselves. But because all the animals in power are prey, he struggles to get an investment for his idea and ends up getting involved with the polar bear mafia to get money for the park. Long story short after some struggle the park starts to work well and nick is able to repay his debt, though now he is a pawn to the polar bear mafia. At this point judy gets involved, where she is already a cop. (This makes for a better plot because if only large animals are the police then who is policing the small animals? No wonder mr. Big is thriving) Judy realises what is going on and while she was initially going to report nick, she sees how happy the predators are and decides to let the situation be. Life is going good for Nick, but it all changes when he has unexpected visitor. A sheep in wolf clothes shoots nick with the savaging serum, causing nick to go crazy. Before he goes crazy, the sheep removes Nicks collar, and the news incident is framed that nick took off his own collar and hence turned savage, the predators can never take off their collars. Nick ends up getting arrested and his operation is shut down. One key difference between the drug in the movie and the drug in the original draft is that the drug wears off after a while, as opposed to being intoxicated at all times. Nick needs to prove his innocence and for that he uses judys help to escape from jail, though this is a very conditional alliance. Nick tries to go to ask for help from the polar bear mafia but they refuse, and try to kill him when they see hes with a cop. However that day is his sons birthday party so their execution is held off, and they are kept in captivity. Nick and judy use this chance to escape. While escape they go through the room wherer the birthday party is taking place where the son is old enough to get his own shock collar. The kids in the party look at him in awe while his father looks sad for his son. When the collar is finally on him, the son starts to become overjoyed, and the collar shocks him in response. The father sadly hugs his son as he realises what his son will have to go through. Judy sees this first hand and realises what the predators are going through and how they are basically barred from feeling any genuine emotion. One detail of note, is that the collar is there to prevent the predators from doing any harm, while the polar bear mafia is still managing to kill people and do other illegal activity, showing how they are easily able to bypass the collar, and how the collars are inherently flawed at what they are supposed to do. While escaping from the mafia nick gets heavily injured and passes out. When he wakes up, he's surrounded by curious eyes of baby bunnies and we realise judy brought him to his farm. Nick sees his wounds have been tended to and thanks judy when he sees her. Nick realises his collar is off and judy points out she took it off because the police also have the key to unlock the collars, but she doesnt try to put the collar back on him, saying she trusts nick. Nick feels moved and together they try to investigate what is causing the predators to go savage. From here the movie follows the same darting plot, with the the exception that the lion was never the mayor, it was always bellweather who was a pig in the first draft. In all her panels she is shown to be a shifty woman. Fast forwarding a bit, nick and judy end up at a venue where gazelle's concert will take place. Nick and judy gather evidence in the form of a voice recording to take down the mayor but she catches up to them, saying she can deny everything and will make sure nick and judy suffer for trying to defy her. In the process their only piece of evidence ends up destroyed. The only solution now is to prove to everyone that the collars are ineffective and hence unnecessary, and nick removes his collar in front of everyone. The entire audience is seeing this but the mayor has one final trick up her sleeve. The mayor darts nick, along with the 4 tigers that are gazelle's back up dancers from the post credit scene. The audience run for their lives and judy thinks shes going to die a gruesome death at the hands of 5 savage predators. However nick actually ends up defending her against the 4 tigers. I dont really remember what happens next, since I'm not sure if the storyboard for the end was ever made. Realistically someone realised the mayor was involved in all this, managed to find a cure, cured all the savage animals and got rid of shock collars forever. What happens of nick and judy? Who knows.
