My great, great grandfather’s daughter Williamina Fleming discovered The Horsehead Nebula back in 1888 while working cataloging stars and galaxies. She also was the first to discover and catalog dwarf stars. All this off of glass plates and the technology they had back then. I wish she were here to see what her discovery looks like now! Amazing….

Now that was very cool, I did not know it was in the Orion constellation. Hope to see more like this.

I saw flame nebula

A beautiful sight. I wish it looked like that through my telescope, some chance! Still, I will have a go at imaging it this winter, managed the Orion Nebula last winter and now dying to image the Horsehead, one of the most famous and beautiful in the sky, if not the most.

@@A.A82 Lmao, those clouds are shifting faster than you can even imagine, but at the size of that structure, to notice any perceptible difference, you'd have to take pictures separated by hundreds of thousands of years.

@@A.A82 But the clouds above our heads are located in a turbulent atmosphere. Space is a vacuum and none atmospheric meaning there are no forces working against the clouds in space.

A lovely feature. I’ve often thought that the Horse-head Nebula looks more like a howling Baboon looking leftwards, but during the early days when it was recognised for what it is there were many horses around while Baboons lived in Africa.

I’ve wondered what its like. There are knots in those clouds that are so dense they are becoming stars! So, is there parts deep in there that are hard enough to walk on? Would it be like quicksand if you feel into it? Just a wisp around the edges that gets denser and denser as you fall toward a star? They look pretty solid, even though most of it is just dust and gas.

I spent a good hour trying to see it with a ten inch one night, but I just couldn't. And I had nice dark skies too.

But this is not the picture that hubble took , Hubble is not capable to capture this kind of radiation.

So, is the detail in the usually dark Horse Head from the IR spectrum? It's very interesting :)

It's funny how in the visible light it looks like a horse, but in the infrared it looks more like a mushroom cloud. Amazing what a change in wavelengths can do.

The Horsehead nebula can be observed with a good backyard telescope.

At that scale, gravity looks like surface tension and light pressure looks like gravity.

If you haven’t seen the Horsehead Nebula in Orion yet, you’re missing out on an incredible sight. I saw it through a telescope from the U of S in Saskatoon. It’s just an absolute beauty. Looks just like a stallion rearing up on his hind legs, with the mane blowing out behind his head.

We need a game about the universe and nebulas and black holes that wpuld be sick
