I have enjoyed my H6 for several years now. Used it for podcasts as interface, event recordings and for short film production. Great device!

The fact that this is like $179 is still a steal, even if the Essential version is coming out soon.

Ive been on the fence the last 3 days about picking this guy up or waiting on the Essential version.

The new essential line has no hain settings. It wont peak on you.

It generally helps you keep your levels from peaking if the source itself is too loud. Say you had an electric that was raging and you gain it down as far as you can and it’s still raging and clipping. Thats where the pad would come in handy because you can turn it on and it drops the lower bound of your threshold to -20 db giving you a bit more head room to get that track in it’s sweet spot.

Can you use rechargeable batteries in this?

I found it helpful. I just bought an H6 a week ago, even knowing the H6E is now out (For $180 versus $299, I'll happily set gain)!

I recorded this just before they announced the new recorders. But honestly, there is still a place for this recorder. Personally I don't like the lack of hardware adjustment dials on the new essential range.
