The Zoom F8n and the Zoom F8n Pro are amazing field recorders that pull from a rich history of the Zoom line of professional products. These are Zoom's answer to the more expensive name brands such as Sound Devices.
It's kind of amazing how much technology and computing power is in one little box.

Regarding power: I’ve been using 2 Krisdonia 50000mAh powerbanks. (About €190 at Amazon) for my F8 (not n or pro). I did a full test recording 8chnl + phantompower on 8 micinputs (soundfield ambisonic + schoeps mc5 MS + 2 lavaliers) on 2SD vards simultaniously on 1 powerbank. Ran for over 52hrs continiously on 1 powerbank. (Had special barrel to hiroshi powercable made) So with 2 of these powerbanks you can easily run 10 days of shooting without recharging (and takes about 6 hours for full recharge).

What do the pots control if set to trim when recording to 32-bit? I always record in 32-bit on my F8n Pro and and usually just do a PolyWAV with no mix, but the pots (when set to trim) still seem to adjust the gain - even though i thought the gain is fixed when recording to 32-bit?

Hey, What do you think about the lack of dual channel recording feature? What options are there to have a safety track? the 32 bit float is enough to compensate this function?

  • @soundjustlikeapro

    @soundjustlikeapro

    Жыл бұрын

Hey. Thanks for reaching out! I have never needed a safety channel. There are limiters for every channel that you can set individually. Beyond that, the 32 bit float does a great job. You would just track whatever you want, pull it into an audio DAW and normalize it to bring everything to where it needs to be.

Thank you! Thanks for reaching out. 32 Bit Float is never a “bug.” You don’t have to use it. I still record in 24 Bit quite a lot when clients just want the files at the end of the day and don’t want to mess with the storage on the bigger 32 Bit Float files. If you know you’re just going to do 3 mics, maybe look at the F6. I’m pretty sure it does 32 Bit Float too and it’s a little smaller and cheaper.

Hey! Thanks for reaching out! It all depends on your other gear. Does your analog console have XLR or TRS outputs? Does the camera have XLR inputs or just 1/8” TRS? If possible, I would go XLR out of the console into the F8n and XLR Mini out of the “Main Out” to XLR in on the camera. If that doesn’t work for your setup, I’d see about a dual female XLR Mini to 1/8” plug for the camera. If that isn’t available, I’d do a male 1/8” to male 1/8” out of the Sub Out into the camera’s 1/8” jack.

Hey. Thanks for reaching out! You’d have to go to the Mix Pre 10 for a true Apples to Apples as far as inputs and such. I shoot with a guy that owns a Mix Pre 6 and he’s told me that my F8n Pro gives him just as good of files at the end of the day as his Mix Pre 6 does. If anything, mine are better. Of course, I’m a dedicated sound mixer on his shoots vs him doing sound as an afterthought on the 1 man band stuff. The thing is, the F8n Pro does all the same things as the MixPre 10. 32bit float, auto mix, insane amounts of crystal clear gain, and has the same type of outboard mix attachments. To me, it’s a matter of $675 worth of extra cash just for the name Sound Devices. I don’t know your situation but there are producers that I’ve come across in Atlanta that just know name brands and Zoom isn’t on the list. So that's a bummer sometimes. I do like the Mix Pre stuff though. It looks good and sounds good. The Zoom F3 and Zoom F6 are good too and do all the same things in much smaller frames. They just have less inputs. Either of those could sit right under a camera and never be in your way on the 1 man band gigs. Just a thought. F6 amzn.to/3FF2fU3 F3 amzn.to/40l3P5r

A couple of "issues" with F8n pro 1) the headphones amp I hear it's not that great. When would that be an issue? I'm trying to imagine of a situation when I'd need to hear properly what I'm doing and maybe folly sound (once in a bluemoon) could be a case. Is the headphones amp that terrible on F8n pro? 2) Folks say the knobs are small. Personally I rented F8n once and I did a successful recording. I liked having arm/PFL for each channel - and the knobs felt ok. Maybe all those set guys active mixing have other needs? I setup once for the shot then forget about it until the next setup. Btw I hear the mixpre ii TC generator could go out of sync in something like 6 hours. How's the zoom TC? I'm working with tentacle on the camera. Maybe I should jam the TC of a tentacle in the recorder as well?

@@cubul32 those were kind words. Thank you for that! “Snob Gear” is my new favorite word, Ha. Yes, the headphone amp leaves some to be desired. I covered that in my most recent video starting around the 5:00 mark. The headphone monitoring definitely has some noise. My thoughts landed somewhere around the fact that I’d rather them put all of their R&D effort into what is hitting the SD card and I will settle for a little white noise in the monitoring. It’s not completely off putting or distracting. It’s something that your mind makes a mental note of and moves past within a few minutes. White noise is something that typically drives me crazy so you’d think that this would be a problem but it’s really not. I’ve never monitored with a Mix Pre so I honestly don’t know if that’s any better. The knob size has never been an issue at all. If you’re setting it and forgetting it on a set, this shouldn’t be an issue for you at all either. I’ve used it a lot in my bag while monitoring 4 Lavs and 1 shotgun while holding the boom over my head. I don’t like doing all of that at once but I’ve never thought to myself in those moments, “you know, if these knobs were bigger, all of my problems would go away.” I think you’ll be fine there. As far as time code, I’ve jammed a set of tentacles at the start of the day and have still been tracking with them at the end of an 8 hour day. I’ve done the same with the Diety boxes. I also run mine off of a Vmount battery so I don’t have to turn it off all day. Turning off and back on after lunch or a battery swap may introduce problems but I’ve never had to find out. I suppose, to be safe, you could Jam one more Tentacle and leave it plugged into the F8n Pro to run TC from all Tentacles. I really do think it will do everything you’ll need it to do for $675 cheaper than the MixPre You can see my video where I address the noisy headphone amp here. Let me know what you decide to do. @@soundjustlikeapro Yeah I plan to use a V mount as well, power it and forget about it. Btw did you figure out how many Watt per Hour is the F8 pro sipping? Any ballpark examples? Thanks for the detailed answer - you clearly work in the biz by the way you answer ;) (detailed, careful, with links and timestamps). Snob gear has its place and time. I just bought a RED Komodo but I know I want that quality because - well - I'm an image snob at this point. As long as it's something the user wants, sure; but good image or good sound is not made by snob gear. One thing that might help me with the mixpre 6 ii is the 3.5 TRS output. And the 4 xlr config might be more than enough for now (I own 2 lavs g4 ew500 and an mke 600 shotgun for now - if I need more I guess I'll make the client rent dammit). I'm trying to think of when I would need that clean headphones signal or a mixpre in general. For one, I'm rather scared and I don't want to second-guess the noise every time I record; but that's just me being a noob at sound and not wanting to take a chance with clients that pay me good money. Then I know I want to do shorts (and possibly features) and I want to dabble on folly and sfx and I'll be running around with the recorder picking up all sorts of sounds - so having that instant feedback might be worth it for me. Last but not least, I might rent my gear and mixpre might be a more robust choice. I love that F8 interface but I lean so hard towards mixpre. So idk, I'm really obsessing here like a maniac. If I could have a choice I'd make a mixpre with a zoom interface lol (I think they call that 833? and it costs more than my car?).

Thanks for reaching out. Instead of an internal battery that puts the unit out of service when dead, the best thing that they could've done was to make an interchangeable battery. This has 3 different ways to power itself. You have the option of 8 AA batteries in the tray, the 12v DC adapter that ships with the unit and the DC input via the Hirose connector. That last option is how I power mine. I have 2 cheap Lithium Ion V Mount batteries from amazon that I change out with mine and either one can run the unit for 2-3 shoot days. That had they given it that new connector you could do 12 channal 32 bits Dolby Atmos. Or with the VR H8 i think it's called you could do 32 bits ambisonics. Granted with the recorder as it stands you could do ambesonics with the Senheiser mics or Rode's NT-SF 1 mic I guess. Or the Tetra mic. Also to be fair all these will give you a studio sound as compaired to that VR peace. Which I suspect is something like Zoom's MS H6 ball. Which mid side with it sounds kinda cool. Thank you for reaching out! You mean the 32 Bit Float? If so, you’re right. A clean capture of a dirty signal is still a dirty sound. It would be no different than a clean capture of a distorted or overdriven electric guitar. You can’t pull distortion out of a track if it happens before it gets to the track. It’s our job as sound engineers to make sure that things like transmitter clipping never happen. We have to do our best to stand in the way of anything that will ruin our sound capture and our mix. On wireless systems, I run the signal on the transmitter side as soft as reasonably possible. Like -12 or -18 and roll back the AF output of the receiver a little bit so the recorder gets a clean input. I hope that helps. Good luck out there!

And it sounds pretty great actually. I bought it 14 years ago while in college and have used it for an unbelievable amount of projects. It’s the best sounding $300 microphone on the planet. Anyone who has a problem with that microphone has either never used one or is intentionally judging it by any metric other the one that matters, sound.

@@soundjustlikeapro sorry i would like to say you just do missleading marketing for china crap that you can make some extra coins. No problem. Very easy… why to make a video comparison with some professional gear? Ist’s the sound of this microphone. Very easy get the professional gear and send it back. Every 300 Viewer will buy. And fill yours pocket. And there is a rule in audio. Never provide worse sound quality to public. It’s yours reputation you damage. Look arround this thousands of Rode microphone videos where it gets obvious that those guys never did try to understand basics how to handle a microphone. To have a Title, sound just like a pro is missleading total with the use of this microphone. Sound like a marketer is shure the better title unless this recorders are realy damned good. But even the Pro have their negative points on my wishlist.

What is more misleading, to show the gear that I use that obviously sounds good nomatter the price point or to buy expensive things and return them just to make some affiliate income off of things that I don't actually use? The microphone that captured my voice in this video was all I could afford when I bought it 15 YEARS AGO and has been one of the biggest surprises of my career. When I bought my APEX 460 in 2007, I never thought that I would still be using it today on professional projects, but here we are. I have recorded albums with it. I have recorded hundreds of Voice Over projects with it. I would put it up against literally any microphone in it's price range and some well beyond it''s price range. It's totally fine to think whatever you want to think. It's interesting to me that you've taken such an interest in this one element of my channel, especially when this video in particular is about the differences of two field recorders. So thank you for your interest and concern. At the size that my channel currently is, I would think it would be obvious that I'm not out here marketing anything for "extra coins" or looking to "fill my pockets." I'm talking about the gear that I use and showing what it can do. I make all of my "coins" as a location sound person in the film/tv community and as a voice actor and musician, and I like it that way.

@@soundjustlikeapro it just sounds cheap and is not a good idea to use it if you wish to get recognised as a professional. I do not talk of any price range… it’s a Russian Chinese combination of crap that should not be used to promote. Professional means in this sense you have customers that pay you. This have nothing to do with Quality.

@@DanielaTocan as a professional sound recordist and microphone expert, what do you use for yourself and your own clients? I work as a voice actor and also tracking engineer for music and vocal ADR for film/tv. I have worked with this mic and many more on songs that have been on the radio and played all over world. A $10 hammer and a $100 hammer do the same job in the hands of a craftsman who knows how to use it. Professionals get the job done with the gear that they have and whatever gets it finished. My gear, all of my gear, has earned me more than enough credibility with clients and money from clients from all over world. Thank you for your concern but this mic, these field records, and every other piece of gear that I’ve chosen to use and talk positively about are all doing just fine. What is your set that you use to do what I do?

Hold on a sec. You spend ten minutes stating the differences between the two machines, extolling the '32 bit float" of the pro model, and then you say "I haven't had a chance to use it yet!" FFS.

Bad knowledge of audio dude - your ‘opinion’ on any audio gear is very irrelevant !
