If you’ve got the space, make a variety! Sometimes you want a game with more literally defined space, and sometimes you don’t. UDT 2.0 would be great for a lot of FATE games or other RPGs where combat is a little more abstracted, or a scenario like the Minotaurs Maze from a couple videos back in this series. I just did a scene with my kids where they chased a pig through the woods, and a flocked UDT 2.0 would have been perfect! In other games, the strategy is all about positioning. I’ve got a D&D encounter that is an ambush by a ranger and a rogue assassin, both on horseback armed with long bows. I’ll probably play it on a 4’X4’ game board, and it will have a more war-gamey feel.
Another possible tip for UDT: (as you mention on this video) I bought a very thick poster board and covered it with a slow curing epoxy paste and textured it very quickly with a roller from greenstuffworld when firm. Then I used a ruler to cut a grid into the firm paste. To paint it, I just used a dark spray primer and drybrushed some stone colors on to it. And voilà. I like the harder surface that cured epoxy offers. Congrats on 100 videos!
Been blowing through your videos... You know how when you get older you think to yourself " man in i could go back in time and tell younger me what i know now"... Well by no means am i young but what you have done for me and my players is enriched our games and our lifes with your time tested shortcuts tricks and tips. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. May your rolls be 20's 👍
"Elizabeth!! I've just found this nifty UDT video on the KZreads! Elizabeth!!" 🤘🍻 You're one of my favorite content creators Professor!
Gonna build this soon, so I've been watching and listing down materials and apparatus. I thought I'd share with the rest of the classroom too Utility Knife Gel roller pen Pencil Paint Brush Thread/string 1/2 Owens corning XPS foam insulation Lazy Susan Aluminum Foil Green Stuff Mod Podge Black Paint Brown Paint Green Paint Golden Brown (Smart Craft) Paint Tan Colour (Smart Craft) Paint Suede Colour (Smart Craft) Paint Light Taupe (Smart Craft) Paint Fawn Colour (Americana) Paint Dish Soap Elmer's Clear Glue Minwax Clear Satin Polyurethane Optional: Agrax Earthshade
XPS is AMAZING for making terrain. Black Magic Craft knows his stuff, too. Sturdy stuff, yet carvable and shapable, holds paint well. Fun stuff making all those stone shapes too, if you have an afternoon to kill.
I look forward to everyone of your videos.

Thanks! I look forward to seeing your terrain on FB!
I added a round table top from Home Depot to my lazy Susan, so the surface area is about 2x the size of your board. The round room is going to work out great as it will have an outside and an inside! I have made 6 maps so far, forest, desert, air/water, cobblestone, underground, underdark. Thanks for the great ideas.
Dan, Ive been running games since 2nd ed (I'm 49) and I have to tell you that your advice and channel are thee best out there. I've never watched the same youtube videos so many times, ive taken notes on your ideas and after running a 15 month Curse of Strahd campaign RAW, the scalability in this version is out of control! I'm starting a sea faring/pirate themed game in a few weeks (Oct 2019) and will be using your ideas for, what I'm telling my players is a "middle/dark ages" version of the Forgotten Realms; a "prequel" of what your official D&D Beyond 1st level will become. Thanks so much for your efforts and advice. Sam.
"You don't need to make a fancy table with a sunken center"... Which I just spent 6 months doing... because I like BMC's table... Ugh.

Been watching your videos for the past year and taking notes to modify my house-ruled Third Edition D&D game. You also inadvertently introduced me to the OSR with references to the works of LotFP, DCC, and Tracy Hickman's XDM in these videos. I've taken the plunge and subscribed to your channel with this 100th Episode. Thank you for for your contributions to our hobby. You may never know how many gaming tables have improved because of your efforts here on KZread.
I live in Queensland, and it seems like the choice of insulation at the stores here is a bit limited (not enough cold weather). No XPS to be found... So where a mate got me some sheets of XPS from an old vending machine, I was like: "UDT!!!!"
Love the family interruptions :D its totally heart warming stuff!
We use similar "zones" in Karate. We called it Man(center/close combat distance),Earth(projectile distance), and Universe(far distance).
For texture, just for fun, I tried one of those "sea anemone" dryer balls, just using my palm to roll it around in concentric circles all over the board... worked awesome. The trick is to only use minimal pressure for light texturing (like weathered stone), or a heavy hand for truly pock-marked and pitted texture (like the floor of a Tinker Gnome's Laboratory.) The more you repeat-roll over the surface area, the more random, and better the texture. You can sparsely texture for light weathering, or increase the density of the pitting marks as you like. Experiment, and have some fun. For my first go, I made a really awesome heavily weathered stone texture on my monolith pieces for a Stonehenge layout. I made it look like they were chipped out of living rock using flint tools. My players thought I had spent a lot of time knifing each tool mark. The truth was really depressing. ;oP

I like the new version. I think I may have to wander down to Home Depot tomorrow and get myself a piece of foam.

What a fantastic idea. Love the simplicity that still retains the creativity of crafting
Congratulations on 100 episodes of GREAT CONTENT!!! Can't wait to see (and support) the next 100!!!
Congratulations to your 100... I really hope there will follow many many great videos. All times a highlight with fantastic inspiration for managing the roleplay from a complete different view angle than all other (witch I have seen)... and the surprise, you have the more helping, supporting and inspirating content. Great work until now and I'm pretty sure you will hold or improve your level Thank you very much professor :)
Amazing Just amazing. Invents UDT, radically improved UDT, AND listens to his wife.
Congrats on your 100th. Kudos. As always, thank you for the brilliant ideas.
I love that you left the outtake of your son ❤️. I have a 2 year old and a 9 year old and although frustrating at times, they truly are special moments.
Version 1.0 was a game changer. Great job improving on the idea and thank you for sharing the crafting process.
We cannot wait for the next 100 episodes either. My 5 year old and my 3 year old are much the same, but I started my family way late, not when you apparently did. I am thrilled to become one of your patrons and created an account. Thank you for 100 episodes of fantastic content. This dungeon terrain is perfect for anyone using your custom rules, and I would urge anyone using theater-of-the-mind to move up to this scenery. I have been collecting the supplies to make my own set of 1.0. I absolutely get behind this scenery. This perfectly suits the rules that you advocate. Again, nothing to nitpick here. Great work.
CONGRATS on 100! Keep up the great work.
Loved the hale center theater shoutout! Love seeing shows there. Crazy creative sets.
UDT! Man, this was a game changer!! Love mine and the players adapt to it very quickly and love it as well. Thanks Professor!
Good stuff! I appreciate the dedication to improvement and versatility!
That sort of abstract encounter area is an awesome way to mix minis and theater of the mind. I have done something similar but with out any terrain. I really like that your bringing the lazy Susan back.
OMG Im so excited!!! I love making your crafts. I always recommend you to my GM buddies. Much love, keep up the awesome work!!

Just found your channel last week and have been binge watching ever since. Really enjoying your game rules amalgamation and will be introducing some to my game. I just completed an 18” UDT 1.0 and can’t wait to use it in my next session. Just wanted to say thanks from a new subscriber
Happy 100! Keep em coming please!
i made this and my players love it so much thank you.
Can't wait. This should be great. I already have 2 double sided UDT for different environments.
Awesome video professor! The UDT 2.0 now involves scale ( close / far) adding another game tool to the play - love it!
Congratulations on Ep 100!
Congratulations on 100 episodes!
Wow, what a piece of inspiration. I really like this idea. I'm definitely going to use it for a few systems.
I have been getting a lot of good use out of the UDT, I can't wait to see the improvements.
I'll never use your minimalist near/short/far circular board, but I definitely liked your detailed commentary on how you made and painted it. Looking forward to your next 100.
Congrats on 100!
Very cool. I actually like the gridded system.
I enjoy all your videos and always get new ideas from you, even if I don't use all of them. Thanks.
Genius. 4’ x 8’ insulation, much cheaper than buying foam core. My go to is Reddit for characters, backgrounds, patterns, monsters and print on card stock. This just shows you don’t need to buy expensive gear. (Not to put down the expensive stuff, but this is great for playing on a budget.)
Great video! Thanks for sharing. 👍🏼😀
I love that you said “I’m taping”. I remember the good ol days.
Honorable Professor Dungeonmaster, I have watched and enjoyed all of your videos, but UDT and zoned engagement has transformed my games. I hope posting in this older thread still reaches you as it references a key component of my comment. Specifically the relation to stage play sets at 3:43 of Zoned Dungeon Terrain for D&D & Pathfinder (Ep. 100) kzread.info/dash/bejne/ipp1rblunbHYhKw.html As a nearly lifelong Thespian this made sooo much sense to me. The stage itself is a prop and sets the mood, never to upstage the actors. So I have abandoned hundreds perhaps thousands of tiles, walls, doors, windows and elaborate 'Set Pieces' (both purchased and home 3D Printed) as well as assorted Battlemats. I now set the table with 2, two-sided pieces of UDT and everyone loves it. One disk Tavern and Stone, the other Wildlands and Classic Dungeon. Quickly drop on some tree trunks, pillars, doorways, stairs or partial walls and the STAGE is set the scene has changed. And now a request. Please follow-up on the stage association, in terms of miniatures. Should they not also follow the classic Greasepaint approach of the theater's make-up in their painting? Exaggerated eyes, lips, poses and props; designed to be seen from a distance not a under a Crystal Brush microscope. Many of the recurring minis in your videos seem to follow this idea, but I would love to hear you expound on that idea. I hope this finds you and the family well and that you will consider my request as a topic for one of your future videos. With respect and anticipation, Richard
Crazy excited to see this!

It does look amazing. And for the system you use, I'm sure it's fantastic. But I run grid based, so I think that original UDT is perfect. Thanks for this (and the original too!) though. It's great to have options.
Looking forward to it.

Out. Standing. I'll be supporting you via patreon once I get to my PC later this evening.
Happy 100th! Thanks for all the inspiration!
So I’m a little concerned with this setup. It works fine with 1 enemy. But what if you’re fighting a group of goblins. One advances on the healer. She retreats away from the advanced goblin, but not towards the center group. How would you position that?
@fabplays6559

He explained in the video. Anything within your hand’s distance is melee range.
Congrats on your 100th!
Super pumped for this!
This may be mentioned in another video, but if you dig out the circles just a hair more, you could make inserts and use one table top with multiple looks.
Nice! Man my game exploded once i made the udt. This is going to be fun.
Your channel is a must for any GM - thanks for making this. Now if I only had actual real life group to play, and not only remote internet groups :(
For those of you who can't get the citadel agrax earth shade, you can make the black wash, double the water, add 4 drops of a dark brown paint and 4 of a cream/off white paint- I used Folkart Parchment for the white and Apple Barrel Chocolate Bar, but anything close should do. It made a little darker grey, but it still looks really nice I'm actually considering going over the middle zone with it before coating it, to give it that kind of gritty, worn smooth stone look
Very cool I’ll have to try this out
That tool for the circles is a compass, a protractor is for measuring angles.

It is if you do movement in battles abstractly and do not move your characters/monsters like wargaming. The Near/Short/Far is from ICRPG and is another way of judging movement without having to move your minis either from square to square (if you use a grid) or with a measuring stick or ruler. It does speed up play and I have found it to be better but some players may not like it.
Liking and commenting. I guess it's a good thing I didn't start my UDT 1.0 yet.
Happy 100th professor!
I've been toying with more simple ranges for a while, this might just get me to try it out.
I was also just about to embark on making my own version #1. Now I'm going to make it double-sided. Side 1 - classic grid, Side 2 - new zoned. So really the ultimate, ultimate dungeon terrain :)

Made a solid start on it last night. I found the foam to be a bit hard to cut (I have the 1", it's more crumbly/flaky than I expected). UDT #1 side fully-gridded. UDT #2 middle rings drawn, final outer ring to go. And just joined your patreon. Good stuff!

Awesome! Thanks for watching and taking the extra time to comment!
I took 2- 12"×12", self-adhesive floor tiles and stuck them together. There is a kind of outer area, and inner area for "zones". Hoping this works for Discord chat gaming! It is mainly so I can keep track as the GM of who is doing what! Maybe it will work!
