Zonai Dungeon Lore | Breakdown & Analysis of TOTK’s Temples

Ойындар

In this video, I'll be digging into the unexpected lore of the 4 main dungeons of Tears of the Kingdom... exploring whether the Zonai's conquest of Hyrule was done peacefully or through warfare.
We'll be exploring questions like:
Is Gorondia the same as the Goron Mines that we saw in Twilight Princess? Was the Stormwind Ark a Zonai war machine? Did the Zonai cause the Great Flood? And why does the Lightning Temple look so much like the Spirit Temple from Ocarina of Time?

Regarding the Lightning Temple, I think it's pretty interesting how so many of the rooms contain "light" in their names. Room of hopeful light, room of light and shade, room of natural light, just to name a few. Perhaps the lightning temple was a sort of spiritual ground for the Gerudo to "cleanse" themselves in light. This lines up with the light of blessings, which are described to purge evil and purify with their radiance. Going even farther into speculation territory here, maybe the Zonai helped construct the spiritual aspects of the pyramid to give the Gerudo a chance to prove they don't stand with Ganondorf and his darkness-obsessed faction? idk, I'm just spitballing here, but it sounds pretty cool. Also, regarding Gorondia, there are a collection of ruins outside of the Fire Temple. There's nothing remaining except decaying foundations, all next to each other. Maybe this is where the Gorons lived, and their mining spot was the only placed that remained fully intact until today?

Yeah I thought that was really cool too!! I agree the lights seemed to have a spiritual vibe, and that “cleansing” idea would track. I’d need to go back to double check, but I think the rooms of light didn’t necessarily have Zonai tech affiliated with them / seemed to predate the Zonai influence, but that’s a fun theory to think about!! I noticed those Gorondia ruins too - I wish they’d been even a little more fleshed out to give us some hints about the ancient Goron society!!

Integrating Zonai text into the architecture of the five temples could be an excellent opportunity to explore any theories we might have. Although most of the text in the temples is vertical, it adds a fun challenge to the task. I am determined to decipher any inscriptions I come across and will keep you posted on any progress I make.

I totally agree! I wish Nintendo had made the Zonai script translatable like Hylian, imagine all the lore they could’ve snuck in! There was a subreddit dedicated to the translation (r/totklang) but last I checked they hadn’t cracked it /weren’t sure if it was decipherable. But if you come up with anything def let me know because I’m super curious!!!

@@KokiriTheory Thats interesting, I've been going around the Water Temple marking all the locations where there are markings that might have some relevance there are two verticle pieces of zonai text, which I haven't yet translated, but I think that they simply translate to "Water Temple". There is also a shield-like shape, which might have something to do with the dungeon or just a decorative piece. if you go to the Secret Stone altar, and look to your right, next to the right furthest vase-like structure, there is a pillar, which can be found on the opposite side as well. it contains a corner decorative piece, or that's what I'm theorizing. the previously mentioned shield-like shape can be found as clear as day in the very center of the dungeon on the floor. this is accompanied by the decorative corner pieces surrounding them. Hope this helps, I figured out that the dungeon is repeated quite heavily, seemingly entirely symmetrical in regards to the central segment on the first floor.

Some points/thoughts: -What if the cannons on the ark isn't intended for offense, but defense? To protect the Rito against whatever threat is above? There must have been a reason the "god" fell after all. Those cannons seems a lot better situated for shooting at something from above than below. -The lighter gravity in the water temple isn't actually due to the height, but Zonai technology. The effect can be found elsewhere in other Zonai structures, and is also absent away from the temple, even higher up. -The sky islands were not always there, if i recall the land was raised up into the skies for protection after Ganondorf was sealed and Zelda had taken the long way back to the future. So the shortage is really just because the constructs have been constantly harvesting it since then from a limited supply, i'd assume. Nice vid tho, Zonai lore is in sad short supply. 👍

Some awesome thoughts here!! Lemme try and respond to all of them!! - interesting point about the canons being pointed upward, I should go back to the Ark so I can explore that some more!! Definitely interested in the concept of whatever caused the “god” to fall - lol yes I realized after this video that I got the gravity piece wrong 😂 I am super curious about how that tech works though as that wasn’t really explained! - the sky islands we see in the game were definitely raised post draconification but we do know the Zonai came from the sky (and we’ve seen many other sky based civilizations throughout the timeline) so I’m assuming there were sky islands we couldn’t see, or, in a later theory I did speculate that they were from outer space so maybe that’s why we hadn’t seen their homeworld.

@@KokiriTheory Yeah, it's some rather interesting stuff. I too wanna know more about how the tech work, Zonai and Sheika. (and see more of their tech in general haha.) Personally i'm _somewhat_ fond of the "moon bunnies" theory (since that's a thing in east-asian mythology), positing that the Zonai came from the moon. They _are_ somewhat bunny-like with those ears after all. 😏 The origins of the Zonai really is a fascinating conundrum. We really do not know enough about them for how entangled their presence was in Hyrule's past.

Yeah I dig that moon theory as well! It is disappointing how little lore we got, but we know from other games that the Hyrule Royal family sometimes hides elements of history that makes them look bad (ie the shadow temple), so that hidden history is part of the reason why I feel the Zonai era may have been… less than diplomatic 😅

The lore for these dungeons has sort of gone over my head so this video was super cool for me. In regards to the founding of Hyrule though, it seems like that was done during a time when Rauru and Mineru were the only Zonai left (Ganndorf says as much). So stuff like the depths mines were likely (maybe) from a far earlier time, when the population of Zonai was much larger, but still after they first descended from the skies. Its hard to say which of these two time periods the Zonai influence in the temples would have come from, because its hard to see Mineru and Rauru alone assisting to that extent, but also from what you brought it up would make a lot of sense for the Water Temple to have been made around the founding. Though I'd say the Wind Temple is likely to have been earlier, because by the time of Rauru it seems like the Zonai had been operating on the surface for a while so the story of a Zonai descending from the skies and making the arc wouldnt make as much sense. To me it would make sense if that happened when the Zonai first started descending? But who knows really, the story is pretty vague and likely doesn't include all of the details. For the other two temples I don't have any significant thoughts to contribute other than maybe the additions to the Lightning Temple maybe being some sort of power generator for the Gerudo that fell out of use for some reason? Dunno.

  • @spicysquire3521

    @spicysquire3521

    10 ай бұрын

But tldr I do think that the detail of the founding of Hyrule being in a time when Rauru and Mineru were the only Zonai remaining might affect some of the ideas you present, but also might not necessarily contridict them. I do think that Rauru could have won the other races over peacefully with knowledge and technology that could help them with what they needed help with, maybe even contributing man-power for building through constructs (which Mineru is shown to be capable of building), considering how friendly the leaders of the other races seem to be with him. Maybe that sort of collaboration (zora water works, devices assisting in goron mining, potentially the other two depending on other factors) is what we see in some of the temples? There could have been hostility, but I guess I just don't really see it with how the textual reason Ganondorf hates Rauru is that he created a time of peace rather than chaos (at least that's what I've been told was said in the Japanese version).

@@spicysquire3521 Wow thanks for all this great analysis on this!! I was talking with some folks on reddit about this whole timeline issue because I was struggling with it myself - I didn't really communicate this in the video but the way I'm rationalizing it (in my head at least) is this: I'm assuming that from the time the Zonai first arrived and began attempting to mine Zonaite, the conflicts/diplomacy they established with the other races could have taken place over the course of a long time (centuries even), and the actions I described in the video ultimately created a system of a loose confederation of colonies/territories that were pretty much allied with (or under) Zonai control. As for Rauru, I think he came at the end of this era, and his role was formalizing the territories into a kingdom - having each group officially bend the knee to be officially absorbed into the kingdom if that makes sense. TLDR, essentially I think that Rauru's predecessors would've done most of the dirty work, he came along later to formalize the kingdom officially.

@@spicysquire3521 also I hadn't heard the part about the Japanese version where Ganon's mad that Rauru is establishing peace vs chaos. I guess my read is not so much that he wants chaos but he doesn't want to be controlled by a Zonai alien overlord (lol), mostly because I think that's more interesting/nuanced, but if that's the textual reason given then I guess I shouldn't try to rewrite the canon!! I'll have to look into that a bit more!! :D

@@KokiriTheory that timeline makes a lot of sense! I'm struggling to find the source for what I heard about Ganondorf's motivation, but I'm finding a lot of posts with people mentioning it. Detesting the Zonai/Rauru for their arrogance in thinking they should rule is also being mentioned as a motivation, so that could actually work well with your idea (even if personally I lean more towards the side of peaceful assistance because of the way they're presented). I'm not sure if I'll end up finding the source i originaly saw, but I'll send it on your reddit post if I find it.
