Zombie infections are fairly interesting for several reasons. For one, they appear to fall outside the laws of biology and life itself. Second, entropy would absolutely body an infected individual, and third I mean its a zombie come on. But the infected in Zombie land are a different breed. Having been infected with a real world disease that is just as horrifying, they infected change but also seem to adapt over time. But how is this possible and what is the pathophysiology behind it? Lets discuss that in todays episode!

    Sounds very unlikely, considering only 4 people in the United States (assuming that's where you live) have been confirmed to have contracted vCJD from contaminated beef since 1996. Additionally, every confirmed case of vCJD was contracted while the patient was overseas, typically in the UK. It's much more likely that she had some sort of familial or sporadic form of CJD.

    The BSE outbreak is the reason why the vast majority of medical equipment is single use. Back in the 40's military hospitals even had washable wound bandages. But now virtualy everything that comes into contact with blood and costs less than $500 gets incinerated. Because prions can't be destroyed with sterilants or autoclaving we resort to scorched earth. We used to have reusable surgical tools like scalples but now you only see those in high school disection labs. Any object that comes into contact with nervous tissue, regardless of cost, is put in puncture proof containers and is shipped off to be incinerated because that is the only way we can be sure that any prions, infectious or not, won't be able to infect another person.

    The biggest plot hole of Double Tap was the fact that people like Maddison and Berkeley exist after 10 years of a zombie apocalypse where the zombies have evolved. Btw Uber was created in 2009 so actually it makes sense that Uber was referenced.

  • @dr.altoclef9255

    Maddison has apparently been able to just avoid the zombies. She said she was hanging out in Pink Berry or something, so presumably when things got bad she would duck into the freezer and the zombies wouldn’t follow because they found the freezer an extremely hostile environment. She does seem to be able to make quick decisions on the fly, despite having no experience with zombies and despite being a complete ditz seems to be somewhat capable. I’m assuming a lot of her problems are related to the fact that she’s been living in the mall with no contact with other people for ten years and thus has no idea how the world works. Berkeley probably has just been lucky.

Assuming the outbreak started before the launch of Uber in March 2009, or that it wasn’t big enough to be remembered, then they can make fun of it as a silly idea. Oh...also... My biggest hangup with the: "infected being alive still" is that the fluid loss they suffer is dramatic and nearly catastrophic. Unless they're gulping large amounts of water to replace this loss, they're just going to lose motor functions and collapse... Likely within 3 days, but very likely faster, due to the aforementioned catastrophic fluid loss. Not like that's the ONLY hole in the plot/concept of "zombies"... But it is a pretty major one.

Anyways after filming there was still $14,000 of merchandise left, If you're wandering why I know this I worked at the Antique Shop from 04-06 and the fireworks shop from 2012-2013. From videos I have seen of CWD, it's not just the dead body that contaminates the environment. All body fluids (saliva, urine, blood, so on), waste and of course bites also leave prions. So if a deer slobbered on a plant but didn't finish and another deer finished the plant, it could still be spread without a casualty happening. That makes it so much more worse.

    I did an essay a while back on the history of human cannibalism in which one case study was the existence of a Prion called Kuru that was found among the Fore people of Papua New Guinea. When a person died it was customary to eat part of that person (like 'freeing' their soul from a physical body), and the 'best' part, the brain, was saved for women and children. The Prion part. At some point someone had the mutated genes for a Prion disease, and after they died it got spread to a lot of other people through this practice. Another annoying thing about Prion diseases is that they can take years to actually show themselves. 10 years even. So many more infected people died and then infected others before it was even apparent. By the time the outside world payed any attention to what was happening some of the people even had genetic mutations that made them 'immune' to Kuru. Which is a very quick turn around rate for how long they were dealing with this. As much as you want cultures to keep their own ways alive, sadly the Fore people had to stop the cannibalism (which remember was fully consensual and post a natural death) in order to release them from the viscious circle of Kuru. Kuru still exists, but it's no longer being transmitted on such a large scale (just the usual ways of transmitting genetic diseases).

    @@CornRecords972 It's one of the major reasons for why eating human flesh or drinking human blood is such an extreme tabu in a lot of cultures throughout the ages: Of course people didn't know what it was that made people sick, but the chance of contracting an illness when consuming parts of another person is greater than when consuming animals. On top of that, blood is actually so high in iron that, if you were to drink it regularly, you'd get iron poisoning. I wouldn't be surprised if we had an actual instinct against canibalism that just gets overridden by hunger when someone is starving.

    I wouldn't say Prion Disease is a disease and more just a class of diseases. Mostly 'cause I spent way too long looking into CJD and Kuru in college. While I don't actually remember it now (it's been about a year) but the ones I did run into did seem to have similar symptoms.

    Prions are some of the coolest (and scariest) diseases out there. Easily one of the most fascinating (imo) is Kuru, as the Fore was our main focus in the cultural anthropology I took. Researchers discovered that another prion naturally formed in some people in Papua New Guinea that resists the Kuru prion. This mutation is being studied to potentially help develop treatments against other prion diseases. Genuinely so damn cool to me.

    Any one ever wonder why they bothered introducing these new zombies when they don’t even use them? Think only a homer shows up? I guess a hawking that self terminated. Also the stronger zombies weakness is… a bullet to the head? Oh like all the others?

  • @dr.altoclef9255

    @dr.altoclef9255

    Homers are most prevalent…my guess is that they were trying to get across the idea that the zombies are capable of things beyond just shuffling around and thus lay the groundwork for the terminator zombies. I do remember them calling out a Hawking during a shootout, as the zombie was able to identify a way up to the roof of the vehicle and climb the ladder silently to use it.

    Huge reason in my opinion why there are special infected is because like many have said this movie was supposedly going to be a L4D movie. The zombies in left for dead mutated over time, so on one hand it makes sense WHY they are there but on the other it was done very poorly and should have just been scrapped for better plot points

    The Year is 2050. Go to movies, it's the weekly MCU movie. Disney logo on screen. It's phase 12 of the story. Movie starts, Tobey Maguire is in a wheelchair. A burglar comes into his house, steals his Funko Pops. Tobey says "it's peterin time" (this is a reference to the hit 2022 film morbius). Also says "that sounded better in my head." He puts on his mask, the crowd screams until my ears ring. He swings at the man as he's running away. A portal opens and captain Europe steps into the scene. Tobey accidentally swings into him He says "it's all good I have healthcare". Crowd cheers, captain Europe had his own TV show in 2048 and this is a reference to his prostate exam episode in season 6 where he makes the same joke. Tom Holland and Andrew Garfield come through the portal and point at each other, making the funny Spider-Man meme again. They all start jerking each other off as the camera zooms out, revealing the Death Star and the Star Wars theme briefly plays. Crowd cheers again before the screen cuts to black and Darth Vader's laugh plays. Post credit scene shows Thanos reappear, and he says, "I'm coming for you Redditors." Crowd cheers one last time, before news sources are saying this is one of the best movies of all time. Thank you Disney for saving the film industry.

So most of the outside to the right of the door everyone runs out of (which used to be Sears, fyi) was CGI-ed back in. They also filmed in Georgetown D.C., which ironically affected my paycheck for 3 months because the employees of my job's sister location got shunted onto our location's schedule. 🤦🏾‍♀️ Warner Bros. screwed up traffic and didn't even make it worth it for us 😭😭😭
