Zoloft (Sertraline): What are the Side Effects? Watch Before You Start!

Get a doctors perspective on the medication Zoloft or Sertraline. Is it right for you? What side effects should you look out for? Learn about what conditions it works for including depression, anxiety, OCD, PTSD and severe form of PMS call PMDD. Learn how this medication can play a role in treating these conditions and some common as well as some rare side effects that can happen.
Zoloft (Sertraline) is in the family of medications called Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI). They influence the amount of Serotonin that is available to help with mood and other functions of the body.
With depression you tend to have symptoms like difficulty concentrating, remembering things or making decisions. Fatigue, feelings of guilt, worthlessness, helplessness or hopelessness. People experience sleeping problems, mood swings, a loss of interest in things that you once enjoyed, appetite changes, generalized pain, persistent sad or empty feelings and even suicidal thoughts or attempts.
Those who are going through anxiety you may have symptoms such as sudden and unexplained onset of a rapid heart rate, sweating, trembling, shortness of breath, pain in your chest, fear of dying, numbness and tingling throughout your body or just a generalized feeling of anxiousness all the time that you just can’t explain.
If you are experiencing these symptoms you need to seek help from a professional. Go see your doctor and get an accurate diagnosis to figure out a good treatment plan for you. Remember depression and anxiety are real medical conditions and should be treated just as diabetes or high blood pressure need to be treated. You shouldn’t feel any different treating any one of these medical conditions.
We'll give a good overview in the video of the common side effects but its important to remember that most side effects if any are transient and can be minimized by working with your doctor. We will discuss more concerning side effects such as serotonin syndrome as well.

Hi! I’m a 21 year old Italian girl andI’ve been taking Zoloft (50 mg) for three months now. I suffered from severe depression, anxiety and binge eating. I constantly isolated myself from people and my life was a nightmare so I finally dedicate to take this medication. I feel so much better and I’m socialising a lot more than before. I feel like I’m living my life. I surprisingly lost a lot of weight, maybe because I stopped binging all day. Mental health is so important.

Robert Crotone Hi Robert, it is common for most side affects of sertraline to decrease after two weeks. I believe that he needs to speak to his doctor about the medication he is using and see if there is a better alternative. It is very important that young people with depression are supported whilst taking anti-depressants as it can make their symptoms worse in some cases. Best of luck

Suffering from long year recurrent depressive disorder and massive panic attacks daily, doctors first could not figure out what was wrong. Finally Sertralin was the med which helped within 2 or 3 weeks. I am able to work again and enjoy life with my family. My current psychiatrist advises me to continue the medication to prevent a relapse. First I was sceptical, because the moment you feel better you typically think, you do not need it any longer. But statistics say, there is a high risk of relapse if you stop too soon or refuse to take your meds regularly. It's important to take it daily and follow your doctor's advice. I never had any side effects. Sertraline clearly helped me regain my strength.. Sometimes it takes time to find your individual med which helps. Sertraline was mine. Stay safe and well!

Zoloft changed my life for the better, greatly. I’m about a year in. The only thing is things seem too good, almost.. then adding COVID lockdowns and the weird way schools are operating, it’s a little surreal. But I’m doing good because I’m doing good, mentally, and it’s showing in my life. I didn’t even understand how depressed I was before. I thought enjoying the moment was for children, and as you got older you enjoy things in the moment less and less until it’s only the memory that brings joy, because of all the stress that’s in the now. Sertraline changed all that. I’m happy, just a little paranoid.

You have explained it the best possible way .. been on Zoloft for over a decade with short breaks .. as a maintenance dose I kept it for some years at 50mg while tapering off with 25mg, and after every other day for a total 3 month time before I stop it .. after being on keto diet for 2 months I believed I could forget Zoloft and live without it being happy again .. I was told Ketosis fixes the mitochondria in the brain in order to produce serotonin by themselves after a period of time … I had a relapse and felt sad all the time , no energy at all to get off the bed , and quit my job (after 2 months off Zoloft ) .. Doc is that the sertraline levels I had achieved all these years under medication that kept me active those 2 months without the medicine or the keto diet? It was hard and I was crying all day that I had to start again the Zoloft at 50 mg daily dose to feel normal again .. because you said 2 months without a SSRI will indicate you if it’s the time to stop 🛑 it 😢. Well I guess I failed 😣… I will never be able to live without the small dose of Zoloft … if only you could help me. What’s your opinion ? God Bless 🙏🏽

I went cold turkey with this 2 weeks back. Couldn’t be bothered with the way sertraline made me feel. Completely numbed out, constant thoughts about what life is about, massive dissociation, couldn’t properly relax, vision slightly effected, almost felt like I was in a parallel universe, my perception of space and time were effected, I could go on. Was on them for around 10 months. Won’t be going back on them. Side effects are pretty hard coming off them. It’s great that they work for some people though! After a lifetime of trying meds to help these feelings of depression and hopelessness, the most shocking discovery was that stopping processed foods, wheat, and sugar and cutting almost all carbs from what I eat had more effect than any of the meds they ever suggested I try. The gut-brain connection is much stronger than modern medicine knows yet, and eating trash makes you go around inflamed, and some new science suggests depression could be a disorder caused by inflammation. That's just my two cents, I have nothing to sell, and it's something I wish I'd known much sooner, and also no medical doctor will *ever* seriously suggest anything like that, in my experience.

I took sertraline for two months and I wish it worked for me, as much as it helped others. My first month worked like flying colors. I was happy and able to do everything. However, a week ago I started having severe depression and anxiety again. My thoughts were raging and small things triggered it. Other side effects were dry mouth, sweats, eating too much even I know I’m full, and constipation. My doctor told me to stop it immediately and make an appointment to see her as soon as possible.

I've enjoyed the 50mg dose. Been on it for 3 years, it gave me a happy warm feeling in my brain and brought nice memories and I laughed more. Side effects: on 100 mg was tired all the time, wagged my foot at night for some reason, yawned all the time. Now, maybe because I stopped suddenly after 2 months of taking it again, the bladder side effect HAS NOT GONE AWAY. Normally only after I took it could I not control my bladder, now even though I'm off it I still can't hold my bladder and when I have to go it's out of no where and I have to go NOW. Not sure what went wrong, but I need to fix.

Setraline saved my life but it does come with some side affects. My vision was slightly blurred the entire time I was on it. I made weird noises in my sleep involuntarily, I sweat...A LOT in my sleep and I had virtually no seggs drive. I felt nothing, like a zombie, but I was in such a mental crisis, it's exactly what I needed, to feel nothing!! I had to stop abruptly but I didn't have any weird side affects. I would recommend hands down. I was happy, level headed and I just felt more active! Go for it

Setraline ruined mine and my partners life. His personality completely changed really rapidly when on it and he got a lot of the side effects, common and rare. I didn't know who he was any more and he did some awful things. His doctor didn't warn about issues like this and didn't warn me or monitor him. It split us up. I know it helps some people and that is great but him taking Sertraline was the worst decision ever. If only I could turn back time and say don't take it.
