Zipline commute: Columbia kids cross canyon to reach school (Learning World: S1E04, part 1/3)
In Colombia young school children in Los Pinos do not have a school bus, they use a zipline across a canyon to get to school.
The only alternative to the zip line is a two hour walk each way. Six years ago the Colombian government promised a cable car but despite accidents on the zipline, it never materialised. See for yourself!

We don't realise how lucky we are. Taken directly to school daily and then home again. These children are playing with their lives for education and they will have to walk 2 hours to get home. That's dedication! They are amazingly brave!

I guess it's not only the long walk. The wild animals in the rainforest are an issue. So it's a remarkably save ride.

"The little children aren't allowed to use the zipline on their own". I love that bit, because if they were allowed to use it, they would be playing on it all the time!

We haven’t lost any children yet….so wait you’ve lost adults?
Son todos unos héroes mis familiares Dios los guarde siempre 😇
Really great kids. I salute their dedication to learn.

Have you thought about reaching out to zipline companies to donate time and expertise and maybe maintenance? Also would be interesting to see if a cage or cable car could be made for extra safety.

Some places with altered zipline trajectory, such as Bolivia, do have sagging issues and during high winds may get stuck. So scary to imagine.
Alright, there is another video showing that mainly school children use the “tirolina” accompanied by an older person to cross Rio Negro. The 800 meters trip takes 30 seconds and the “V” shaped piece of wood is a brake. My guess is a bus transports people back to a higher point to take another zip line back home. For years to Columbian government has talk about building a cable car, but so far it hasn’t happened.
how they come back?
where's the outcome what happened next all these years later
So Anglo-Saxon to play Brazilian music for a Spanish-speaking country video. Nonetheless, this video is crazy!
I noticed These kids are learning times tables at an young age America needs to do better with education with this new young generation.
They'll never know when someone's cutting the rope at the end of their fun journey
Why wouldn’t they just build a school in their village?
Oh my goodness
Just here to say...It's Colombia, not Columbia...good video though!

I'm assuming they must have to walk back. But does that mean that they take the pulley with them? Does each person have a personal pulley/harness?

No. there is a second zipline going down to the other side. They just have to walk the height difference between the ziplines, which isn' tthat much. It doesn't take a lot of potential energy to compensate for the energy losses of air resistance.
How about spelling the country’s name correctly in the title please and thank you.

Tie up your hair people. Imagine getting your hair tangled up in that
Come now. What is better, cross everyday over a beautiful canyon full of green trees surrounded by nature and fresh air, or cross a poluted city everyday in the middle of claxons and contaminated air like a regular kid rutine. I think all would agree on the second one. That without counting the fun and adventure side. The little girl don't know how lucky is.

ColOmbian not ColUmbian kids.
Come on COLUMBIA, make that rail car for Heaven's Sake!
hey I like the idea but i don't like that system. I have a reason and a suggestion. Here's the reason: In the video you can clearly see some of the ropes are starting to come apart and that's bad Also, If that bolt breaks there ain't no support or safety for them, they will fall and most probably die. (unless that big stick has any hidden powers combined with their arms and will... which I doubt.) Here's the suggestion: get the zip-thing to be shaped like an O with the wheel inside instead of a U closed with the wheel and bolt. that way if the wheel fails, they can still limp down and making it so won't be much more expensive or hard to make. if you want to get creative here's a couple other suggestions: if engineers or clever craftsmen are available, Either search and use a better material to make the ropes from or find a way to reduce wear from the zip. Also, I am pretty sure personal zip-towing systems exist or can be relatively and easily made for them to bring themselves and their groceries back up. But if that rope leads to their backyard i'd suggest getting creative on a good security system on that tow-thingy... that's it.
