Zipline commute: Columbia kids cross canyon to reach school (Learning World: S1E04, part 1/3)

In Colombia young school children in Los Pinos do not have a school bus, they use a zipline across a canyon to get to school.
The only alternative to the zip line is a two hour walk each way. Six years ago the Colombian government promised a cable car but despite accidents on the zipline, it never materialised. See for yourself!

We don't realise how lucky we are. Taken directly to school daily and then home again. These children are playing with their lives for education and they will have to walk 2 hours to get home. That's dedication! They are amazingly brave!

I guess it's not only the long walk. The wild animals in the rainforest are an issue. So it's a remarkably save ride.

Alright, there is another video showing that mainly school children use the “tirolina” accompanied by an older person to cross Rio Negro. The 800 meters trip takes 30 seconds and the “V” shaped piece of wood is a brake. My guess is a bus transports people back to a higher point to take another zip line back home. For years to Columbian government has talk about building a cable car, but so far it hasn’t happened.

No. there is a second zipline going down to the other side. They just have to walk the height difference between the ziplines, which isn' tthat much. It doesn't take a lot of potential energy to compensate for the energy losses of air resistance.

hey I like the idea but i don't like that system. I have a reason and a suggestion. Here's the reason: In the video you can clearly see some of the ropes are starting to come apart and that's bad Also, If that bolt breaks there ain't no support or safety for them, they will fall and most probably die. (unless that big stick has any hidden powers combined with their arms and will... which I doubt.) Here's the suggestion: get the zip-thing to be shaped like an O with the wheel inside instead of a U closed with the wheel and bolt. that way if the wheel fails, they can still limp down and making it so won't be much more expensive or hard to make. if you want to get creative here's a couple other suggestions: if engineers or clever craftsmen are available, Either search and use a better material to make the ropes from or find a way to reduce wear from the zip. Also, I am pretty sure personal zip-towing systems exist or can be relatively and easily made for them to bring themselves and their groceries back up. But if that rope leads to their backyard i'd suggest getting creative on a good security system on that tow-thingy... that's it.
