Zinstax Review - A polaroid back for the Mamiya RZ67

In today’s episode, we review Zinstax - a polaroid back for the Mamiya RZ67 that uses Fuji Instax Square film. The RZ67 is one of my favorite cameras and I got really excited when I heard about this new option to shoot Instax film with it. The back costs 290 Euro and cleverly combines a disassembled Fuji Instax Square with a 3D-printed Mamiya RZ67 mount.
Zinstax was designed and created by Han Chen, who studies Business Administration and Engineering in Aachen - a small city close to Cologne, Germany. I sat down with him for an interview via Zoom and put the polaroid back through its paces.
Curious about the back and wondering where to buy it? Reach out to Han Chen via his website zins.tax or email at hello@zins.tax

Mamiya RZ67 Pro II

Thanks for having me, Max! Apologies for the bad audio, though. I'm a bit of a private person and have always been not happy with how I sound, so it actually took a lot for me to do the interview. I hope you find it interesting and I will definitely share more details on creating the Zinstax from start to finish in the future.

Another great product!! I hope it kicks off and starts to become popular as I think that we've been missing the ability to use instant film with MF and LF cameras as much as it was able to be used in the past. With the loss of such films as FP100 and Polaroid pack film, instant film use with cameras like the RB/RZ67 and 4x5's, etc, has literally dwindled away to almost zero. With the few other instant films that can still be used, it makes out choices limited. But, having the ability to use a relative cheap instant film in Instax film, that should open up the market and use of these films greatly. Let's hope this project becomes a success!!!

How do I only find out about the Zinstax back now!?! Thank you Jules, Greg and Max for bring this to my attention. I've already contacted Han and am on his waiting list! I was down to my last 4 packs of Fuji peel-apart film.. and scratching my head as to how to keep going! Actually I've been waiting 2 years for the Hasselback, which is the same idea for Hasselblad, but the developers are in the middle of a Covid storm in HK and that back will only land sometime at the end of the year. Anyway guys, keep up the good work.

With Fuji Instax being so popular, it does appear that a variety of backs are being developed to make use of medium and large format cameras. I saw one group that makes the camera mount and Instax back separately so you can buy the mount that fits your camera. It's sort of like the Adaptall 2 mounts where you bought the lens and mount to your specific body separately. Eventually, I see these being mass produced in China to bring the price down.

Great work by Han Chen producing such a polished and elegant solution to the problem of creating modern instant film backs. Highly commendable. I love instant film, and Instax is my main film now that FP-100C is defunct, but a word of advice to anybody trying it out for the first time: exposures over 1 second are subject to significant reciprocity failure, more so than negative film stocks, so you may need to increase your exposure significantly in low light. Good thing the Mamiyas have true Bulb and Time settings on the lenses! And as always, an excellent review.

@@tomjanowski8584 Well, they're not as good as the original because they had to start from scratch, and the original formula for the film and chemicals was lost when Polaroid shutted down. Fuji has had their Instax formula made in the early 1990's, as Kodak helped them, and introduced in 1998. So they never stopped, and the film is the same as back in the day, as good as the old Polaroid film. It will take today's Polaroid film probably another decade to improve, since Polaroid themselves in the mid 1960's took more than a decade to develop the SX-70 and the integral film, in 1972.

Love the idea Since Impossible Project is very Impossible to re-create Peel Apart film once again as this is there reason: "We DO Not Have The Method in Making the FIlm" Bullshit, They are making their other Polaroid films, So I am hoping, and praying that he makes, and design backs for the Hasselblad, Bronica, (S2A, and ETR, and SQ series), Graflex XL, and Mamiya Press. I know that he is not the only person creating a back for the RZ they will be others to make a universal instant back for the models that I have mentioned, Hey look at the Lomo Graflok Back for the 4x5 since I have one on order....
