Zimbabwe's white farmers start anew in Mozambique

Dozens of white farmers from Zimbabwe have ended up in Mozambique after armed youths seized their lands and gave them to black Zimbabweans.
Mozambique has welcomed the farmers' expertise and investment.
Al Jazeera's Hamza Mohamed reports from Chimoio in central Mozambique.

Land is only part of the equation... You can seize all the land you want but you can't seize business connections and end markets willing to buy products, nor the technologies required to keep the business going and expanding, nor the practical know-how gained through years or decades in the trade. The primary purpose of economic activity is not the promotion of justice or equality; economy is about what works and what brings profit. Justice and equality can be addressed to some extent through taxation of the profit generated by these businesses but not by seizing and "redistributing" the businesses themselves willy-nilly to people who have no clue what to do with them or how to manage them...

For those of you who are worried about Mozambique having the same problem that Zimbabwe did one day regarding white farmers, you can allay those fears because in Mozambique, the government owns all the farmland and it's not for sale. What these white farmers are doing is leasing the land from the government at attractive rates. Thus, no farmer owns the land they are farming. All farmers, black and white, are basically tenant farmers who work for the state. These leases can be as long as 50 years and as long as the land is productive, the state does not intervene. It remains to be seen how this will play out in the long run but so far, it seems that everyone has benefited from this scheme.

For one very simple reason; Europe is not their home. The forefathers of many of these farmers arrived in Africa more than 100 years ago and since then, three or four generations of many families have come and gone. For these people, Africa is their home. Just like for White Americans, White Australians, White Canadians and White Argentinians, Europe is not their home either.

  • @sayidadam9794

Europe is there home because there ancestors were from Europe. For example Africans in Australia, America and Europe are Originally African even if they were born in those Western countries because there blood is African. Do you understand what i mean?

Europe is their ancestral home but that does not mean that they would feel at home there. Are you suggesting that all white people should live only in Europe and all black people only in Africa? If that's the case then tell the 5% of the British population that is black that they should all move back to Africa.

What you are referring to happened more than a hundred years ago and yes much of the land grab was tragic. But that is not the point of my post. The Mozambiquan government invited these displaced white farmers to come to Mozambique to farm. And since, as I said, the government owns all farmland in Mozambique, there is no danger of illegal land grabs or any other such injustices.

Meanwhile in Zimbabwe 5 million citizens are suffering from malnutrition and the country has the highest inflation in the world 1000%. After independence they didn't find anything better to do than to start a civil war that last decades destroying lives, beautiful cities and the infrastructures that the Portuguese developed. Make some research and see some movies that there are in KZread about Mozambique before independence and then say if blacks looked like they were starved and check for some economical data just to see how Mozambique was doing . After independence they become very fast one of the poorest countries in the world. I know some blacks that come to Portugal after independence and they miss those times very much. There were jobs, there were health systems and schools, there were security , cities were very nice and clean. This is what they say because i have never been there. No sane Zimbabwean condones violence against any Zimbabwean. Since the 1890s, we have had many inexcusable instances of violence; be it tribal, political or racial. Although we have made a lot of progress in reducing the casualty records, we still are a young nation learning and progressing. Many white Zimbabweans have been persecuted for the sins of their fathers and that is not right and as Zimbabweans we should build a future where none of our Zimbabwean Citizens will ever feel unsafe in their country and with their possessions. The land was taken through force by the pioneer column and their successors. The Patriotic Front led by Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo and Robert Gabriel Mugabe reclaimed the land through arms and blood. Most of the Rhodesian Forces of European descent were farmers. That could be the explanation for the so called farm invasions.

Mugabe had some good ideas, but this was not one of them. If he had worked with the farmers to train his people then buy the farms off them over a period he might have done well, but just stealing is not a good way forward. Redistributing land could have been done through lease back or lease buy agreements or dependant on the farms output, he could have had his people trained into the position of farmer and then given the original farmer some value back or given them a yearly contribution towards their loss of land until such time as it was paid off, or in lump sums etc. And restitution for training the new farmer, that would have been a win win for everyone, and he could have instilled some new land purchasing rules for new buyers....

White farmers get adequate funding from international banks. Blacks farmers in Zimbabwe were never able to get that kind of funding due to big Zimbabwean banks getting sanctioned by the west. But with due time black Zimbabwean farmers will be able to put Zim back on the map again. Agriculture isnt successful just because white farmers run the farms but are the locals able to access loans and the right funding

There are so many factors that contributed to the fall of Zimbabwe, this is was the least of them. From the rolling droughts, the debt made by the colonial government for arms to fight the natives, the endless sanctions from the west and the loss of skilled labour created their current crisis. The decision to remove the farmers that benefited the most from colonial rule wasn't wrong. There were people living in that land before the farms were there, how do you think they were moved off the land, or does that not count?!
