Zille calls 'Hokaai' on SA optimism post-2024: Nelson Mandela Bay an example of political chaos

Iron Lady of SA Politics, Helen Zille, has sounded a warning on growing blind optimism of South Africa post-ANC rule - ie what awaits after the 2024 National Election where the ANC is likely to lose control of a Parliament it has governed for 28 years. While Zille says the DA is working hard to bring the ANC to well under 50% of the national vote, she warns that this on its own is not a panacea. She says the experience in Nelson Mandela Bay, where nine tiny parties hold the balance of power, is a warning. In this wide-ranging interview with Alec Hogg of BizNews, Zille also discusses recent by-election results; Dr Frans Cronje's insights into how opposition parties could recruit disaffected ANC voters, and the UK's three year ban on Bain and Co over its role in South African State Capture.

    Government grants and hand-outs are the road to ruin. If & when SASSA defaults, millions of people will go hungry and chaos will ensue. We already see the unfair tax regime steadily falling behind what is needed for a state that should be much smaller.

  • @ARenewedmind

    @ARenewedmind

    2 жыл бұрын

    @Ian Williams. You only call " government grants the road to ruin" if you have no realisation that, the world over, governments pay "grants" to their citizens who have been taxpayers all their lives. To land in old age, through circumstances not always of one's own making, in a situation where you have to apply for an "older persons grant" (less than R2000pm) is not a handout but fair after paying your dues during your working life. The real shame are on those citizens who lie about their income and disguise their assets to receive a older person grant when they could sell assets to support themselves. They rob those who really are indigent old people. As far as disability grant goes, it is disgusting how little disabled people receive from the government in this country when there are not enough facilities where disabled people can earn a living. I do have a problem with certain child grants and think it is rewarding teenage pregnancies, but then, isn't that what ANC want, social engineering in a way. As far as the R350 goes, it is too little to actually help anyone survive and I think that it can be abused by dishonest people, who have never paid income tax. Food stamps would be more targeted. If a government is not stealing taxpayers money, then grants won't ruin the economy.

In South Africa they get promoted and deployed.

    They say democracy is not perfect, but it is by far the best form of government available today. Also, the DA may not be perfect, but its by far the best viable alternative to the ANC. We don’t know which ANC is going to pitch up at the election in 2024. Their elective conference later this year may give us clues. I believe the party unity that CR have tried to forge (and sold his soul and principles for), is largely a myth now. So, either of a few things can happen: - If the RET faction and ‘Taliban’ of KZN can somehow put forward a candidate that can achieve a majority (by whatever means possible), that is likely to be the end of the party. The large core of thinking and principled supporters left in the movement will rather abstain than throw in their lot with the horrors this may bring. - Another possibility is that CR or a likeminded candidate wins the candidacy for president. The other faction will only up its efforts to undermine him/her, which they are doing already, relentlessly. Will they vote for this candidate? It remains to be seen. Whatever happens, expect a great many supporters to abstain or switch their support. In both these outcomes I will be surprised if the ANC gets more than 30%. So even in coalition with the EFF, democracy should be safe. Ms Zille is right, even if the ANC lose their majority in 2024 its still going to be an uphill struggle for the good people of SA. We have seen in the WC, in Tshwane and recently in Umngeni the spoiler tactics they make use of. Something else, the large army of cadre deployees will still be in place. Are they suddenly, magically going to support a new coalition government? Also, the harm that will be caused if legislation such as EEB, more BEE, EWC gets passed before 2024 is immense. They should be delayed at all costs. There are two large blocks of voters waiting to be captured by the right party. That of the youth that thus far have not seen party politics as a solution to their dire situation. And that of the disillusioned ex-ANC supporters who will not vote for the ANC anymore and have not found other parties on offer attractive enough. Here lies the rub, who can attract those? Only time will tell.

    No Helen it is also a colour thing. Blacks only. Our original constitution rules has said, with a sub clause that BEE is rascist. The cANCer has changed it.

    BUT cadre deployment as we are witnessing by the ANC remains a possibility under the DA. Pay to play favours amongst the politically connected is harder to disclose under the Corporatocracy of the DA lead Government. The DA might not steel the money but they most certainly pass on the cost of doing business as do their private public partners. Be careful what you wish for.

    The anc could have pulled it off, with competent + honest ppl delivering the neccessary services. They failed + it rendered nearly 90% of municipalities bancrupt + paralysed.

    Why do you still listen to a women who supposedly fought for freedom but some of the very people she fought side-by-side with have serious corruption charges against them. Did this very party not also a few years ago have a partnership or attempted partnership with Agang and that turned out to be disastrous? And what about Mmusi Maimane who use to be the DA leader and everyone knows what happened there. I honestly don't get it, if anything the DA under the Zille leadership has been appauling.

    The fact remains, DA, ANC, EFF and other political are definitely NOT the right vehicle to take our country and the rest of Africa. The time for a referendum that will change our voting system is definitely needed. All these political parties practice kakistocracy over meritocracy, DA has a lot of DA Comrades/Members deployed in key government positions that are neutral, and purely require basic competency & efficiency. The current ilk of SA Politicians must retire, including Hellen Zille. They do not have a real plan of fixing our country and continent, theirs is a narrow and pure egotistical agenda and being drunk with Power. It is time to get new ideas and independent thinking people who don't take instructions from G7 and former colonialists.

    DA will fail to gain over over 23 percent in 2024. The most likely out come for south Africa is anc at 45 percent and going into coalition with inkatha or patriotic alliance and other smaller parties. Western leaning parties like DA, Ff+and action SA. Won't gain much support among rural and township dwelling ppl.

    The last time most people of WC had jobs was under the National Party, along came ANC and brought job losses and DA since created none for locals. Maybe we all be better voting for the Freedom Plus Front, because they are from the NP.

    Helen Zille bragging about grants, like that is what people from the WC is only good enough for. She forget to say locals are jobless and that her businesses have no interest in employing locals , nor is her party lobbying for business to employ locals in fact they are in collusion with them. We need Action SA and PA in collusion with them in the WC. Enough is enough.

    Locals are jobless the whole of South Africa and it is not of Hellen's making. It is because of national government of ANC corrupt acts...who would like to invest in a country like that... where there s no certainty

    Have you forgotten that small businesses are beholden to national policies and that is why they don't hire more? WC does not have a higher unemployment % compared to other provinces. We're a few % under gauteng but much more than EC and some other provinces.
