Zigbee2MQTT vs ZHA vs deCONZ - WATCH THIS BEFORE YOU DECIDE!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

If you bought a Zigbee coordinator stick, you can choose between different integrations or add-ons to control your Zigbee devices in Home Assistant. This video is A MUST SEE comparison between the three main integrations: ZHA, Zigbee2MQTT, and deCONZ. The last couple of days I’ve thoroughly tested these integrations and I will show you the pros and cons of each integration/add-on. Next to that, I will give you my final verdict about what integration will fit your needs best.
This is the LAST ONE OF THE SERIES OF FOUR Zigbee integration videos that I created to help you make the best choice for your Zigbee network in Home Assistant.
The other videos are about how to set up Zigbee integration using ZHA, Zigbee2MQTT, and deCONZ

Thanks for this info; it confirms what I've seen so far. I didn't evaluate by choice, but by necessities. I started out using DeConz and had some issues with device stability and functionality over time, so I switched to ZHA. In my experience, using my setup, ZHA is a better choice. Setup, pairing, operating are just better with ZHA. I have yet to try Zigbee2MQTT, so don't know how that would fare in my setup. With my "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mentality, I probably won't try that until something goes wrong in my current ZHA setup.

Good video, as a poweruser I also like to have a MQTT broker in the middle as in my case i have both domoticz and hass and that way both can work with the same sensors. It give more freedom to change or add things in the future. BUT it also adds an extra risk, the MQTT broker is another part that can stop working.

I think "Installation" and "Coordinator support" should not be equally weighted as "Ease of use", "Documentation" and "OTA Updates" because you can simply choose a coordinator supported by all integrations and the installation is usually only done once so fiddling with a complicated installation process is only required once and there are plenty step by step tutorials like yours.

I'm not really sure if you should do that. I did that and I must say that deCONZ is much more reliable than Zigbee2MQTT for a Conbee 2 stick. I suggest you use a new stick like the Sonoff stick to use Zigbee2MQTT and migrate gradually. This way, you can run them next to each other.

Thanks for the great comparison video! A couple follow-up questions: 1) Related to your "stay live if HA down" point, is that capability only available if you have direct binding config'd for some devices? 2) When using ZHA, are you familiar with the issue where the zigbee devices occasionally display as unavailable and require re-pairing to resume functionality? I have no custom bindings in play, but given the unavailable issue is appearing more and more frequently I am thinking about switching to Z2M, even though I'll have to pick up a new coordinator.

Certain things would not connect properly or connect and not have full functionallity. I am running HA on Home Assistant Blue, in the process when setting up the configuration for Z2M , the configuration following along in the video he entered server: mqtt://core-mosquito , I changed it to server://mqtt://ha.ip for mosquito and it worked. Deconz is not in the same realm as Z2M. (IMHO). So much more powerful and really assisted in trouble shooting issues with certain devices on the fringe of the network (weak zigbee signal). However, be advised you have to take time to play around in the interface. Ex: when adding a RGB light, although connected, you must go to expose and manually turn the light off/on to fully connect. Once you have Z2M up and running, you won't be disapointed.

Consistency Hello there - thank you for your channel btw - I've subscribed! Though - I don want to ask you for advise - I've noticed that my EndPoint devices are sleeping and they dont come alive quickly enough. For example. I have an Aqara Door sensor - that's supposed to light up 2 bulbs when someone opens the door - except - it takes 2-3 sometimes 4+ to trigger the coordinator for the state change from true to false. I'm currently using Sonoff's ZBdongle-E flashed to Zigbee2MQTT coordinator. Do you think I will have a better result with ZHA? I've got a few repeaters throughout as well - Philips Hue, Ikea Bulbs - I just find the "sleeping" of an endpoint is battery saving - but also detrimental to consistency- is there a setting I need to change so it triggers to sleep less? Thanks as always.

I'm in the middle of the migration process from phoscon/deconz to ZHA. Why you may ask? * I bought some thermostats which are not working in deconz but have good support from ZHA. Over all I think there is a little more drive in de ZHA development (also there is struff like zha_quirks which help you to setup devices which are not fully supported yet) * the long time maintenence is WAY better in ZHA. If you're renaming or moving some entities in deconz sometimes the changes are not reflected back correctly into HA. Also the "Direct Binding" is not working in deconz/phoscon (at least I could not find a setting for this in my current installation)

Thanks for the video. I've tried my hand at all three. First deCONZ, then Zigbee2MQTT, then ZHA, then back to deCONZ. I started a fresh installation of HA on bare metal and this time installed Zigbee2MQTT. I found that some of the lights would be unresponsive at times, and other times I would have to re-pair the devices completely. Then ZHA would incorrectly configure my white temperature bulbs as RGB bulbs. So back to deCONZ where my bulbs are correctly configured and respond 99% of the time. I will certainly miss out on the power user abilities with Zigbee2MQTT, and the ease of integration with ZHA, but for me deCONZ is the one that works. I also don't need to do any fancy automations to utilise press and hold.

A bit different experience for me... I am using Sonoff Dongle-P with latest firmware, Based on Aqara H1, Z2M gave me far supperior control over the rocker switch. ZHA allowed: switching on/off one of the buttons, Z2M exposed much more fields and features: - like control over leds, - decouple/relay mode, - outage behaviour, etc. I know that there are some quirks for ZHA that give more control over switch, but in the end, for this one application Z2M gave me all of this out of the box, so even if setup was more difficult, it wins. As mentioned at the start, this is only based on Aqara H1 WS-EUK02, so far I am positively suprised, and soon I am going to test more of mine devices with Z2M, to check which of 2 suits me better.

After very much troobleshooting and 5 🙄 Sonoff sticks E and P versions and installing and using z2m I can only say ok it has some advantages besides Deconz, but I was tired of spending everyday time on z2m when a device went offline without a reason, only cutting the breaker helped but this was not that I was looking for. Moved 2 days ago back to Deconz, and I must say I'd rather have no devices offline or troubleshooting like on z2m. I'll stick with Deconz for the time being. This is the reason why I’m implementing zigbee2mqtt in my house. While ZHA is the new up and coming preferred option, it only supports a quarter of the devices that Z2M does. While many are “exotic”, some vendors like Philips Hue are only correctly supported in Z2M. Since I’m playing with many different sensors from different vendors I want to keep my options open. Also not sure if the network map for ZHA has been fixed up yet. Last I used it some time ago you needed to add in additional bits to produce a Zigbee network map. In Z2M it’s an inbuilt feature. Use the blakadder zigbee database to check your devices first just in case you have sometime weird only supported by one specific integration. Cheers.

Interesting video, thanks for sharing. if I may be a bit critical, I would have love to see some deeper comparison on stability. Specs like supported hardware can be quick scanned looking at their website, but experience feedback on connectivity lost, delay would be really appreciated because it is hard to sense it without running it for at least a month. I am Deconz user, I need to re-pair once a month some Xiaomi sensors but I do not know if the change would help for exemple.

Been thinking of it many times to give z2m a try, and I think I'm going to give it a try now. Two things though. If you run zigbee2mqtt and mosquitto as an addon in Home Assistant OS. Hi Koen, as far as I understood from the HA developers themselves, this is not true for ZHA. If HA gets rebooted, then the connection between devices gets lost if you use ZHA according to them. Even when they are binded. I did not test it myself, but got this info straight from one of the core developers, so I guess they know best. 🤷🏼
