I would put Zico in the same bracket as Maradona, ability and performance-wise. Like Diego, Zico was a brilliant midfield play-maker (remember those?) but with unusually good goal-scoring and finishing abilities. He could score goals most out-and-out strikers could never score - ie losing a close-marker with a sublime body swerve, or a feint and juggle from right to left foot (see goal #1) Of course he was a remarkable free-kick taker.....I would say the best of all-time because of how ahead of his time he was in terms of free kick taking. With no back-lift, he could put the ball anywhere in the net, and unlike most other free-kick masters, didn't have a 'favoured' side from which to attack the goal. He was able to get the ball to dip viciously over the wall, even from short ranges, just using the side of his foot. Ronaldo7 and others are doing this today using a different method - ie raking their forestep over the ball - but Zico was doing this 30 years ago. Zico would spend hours in training perfecting his free-kick taking. He would hang numbered shirts from the goal and practice hitting the 'numbers' randomly called out by a trainer. Goal 22 shows an unusual Zico free-kick - smashing the ball over the wall with his out-step rather than in-step, achieving a reverse swerve. He learned this from another Brazilian monster.....Eder! Thus, his repertoire in free kick taking had uncommon variety.

He was that level, that good, that truly great football player. He was one of my idols in childhood. Maradona, too, grande Pibe.

Unlike Maradona he could not win the world cup, that's the main reason history has now almost forgotten about him. But you have to remember that during all world cup games between 1978 and 1986 Brazil only lost one game - vs Italy in 1982 (a loss after a penalty shoot out counts as a draw). Also their misses in 1978, 1982 and 1986 were real dramas. Remember Zico had a clearly better goals per game ration in the national team (66 games in just 88 games vs just 34 games in 91 matches). Scoring decisive goals in great matches - that's what ultimately counts for being remembered as one ot the all time greatest. But scoring decisive goals at the right time is something that is neither connected with talent nor can you train for it - it is either given by god or simply fate.

@Scott Martin Many agree with you and I'm not saying you are wrong but I think Maradona's total reliance on his left foot compared to Zico's greater ability with both feet just shade it for Zico. Both all time greats of course.

the team of Zico in 1982,as well as the team of Pele and Revelino and Zagalo(of lebanese descendance) in 1970 are 2 dream teams that can't be repeated..the loss of Brazil team in 1982 is the biggest injustice in Football and it changed all the tactics of the game...Zico is a great footballer and one of the best in the world..for me,he is the best!

Better than Diego is a bit far off but he was phenomenal. Very fast, superb ball control and surgically precise goal kicking...probably one of the 10 best forwards in history. But Maradona was on another planet. I've seen them both play live BTW, I was 15-16 and went to the stadium in Italy back then many times and had the chance to see live most phenomenal players of the time who are probably among the best 50 of all time (Maradona, Platini, Zico, Rummenigge, Falcao, Mattheus...you name it).

@@monibaye1584 injustice? Brazil simply was too full of itself and kept on attacking Italy who was master of defense and counter-attacks since the early 1960s. Threw the wrong bone to the wrong dog, Brazil simply failed completely the tactics, no injustice. Most Italians say it openly...it was not Italy that won the game, it was Brazil that lost it.

Best free kicks I've ever seen. Maradona and Mihajlovic were great too, but I think Zico had some spark of magic that could not be matched. Too bad he came to Italy when his physical prime was already passed.

Hey mate, how you doing? Sorry say that, but you're wrong. Zico won the Brazilian league in 1980, 1982, 1983, libertadores 1981 and copa intercontinental 1981, then went to Udinese. He was in the best moment of his career until he suffered a knee injury, after returning to Flamengo in 1985. after the injury, he won another Brazilian league and one "Brazilian copa" (second most important championship in Brazil).

@@dubase My friend, alas Zico played only a full season in Italy (1983/84), in which he showed some amazing skills and scored 19 times in 25 games. From the next season, though, he got injured and played just part of it, scoring only 3 goals. No doubt he kept playing well (he was part of Brazil in Mexico in 1986), but not at the same levels of his first season in Udine.

C'è poco da fare, il livello tecnico dei giocatori degli anni '80 era probabilmente il più alto mai raggiunto. Anni '50-'60 troppo lenti, anni '70 gioco troppo violento (in A tra gli anni '70 e i primi dell'80 ci furono tantissimi infortuni gravissimi, gambe fratturate o ginocchia sfasciate...a memoria ricordo Riva, Buriani, Baggio, Antonioni...) e dopo i '90 il calcio è diventato veloce e iper-atletico ma di tecnica non se ne vede molta. Oggi ci si impressiona per quel che fa un Messi ma alla fine è solo molto veloce con un ottimo controllo di palla, fa piu o meno sempre le stesse cose (benissimo). Andate a vedervi cosa combinavano oltre a Zico altri fuoriclasse come Platini, Maradona, Falcao...tocchi, lanci, tiri e dribbling assurdi...tanto per dire Maradona ha segnato da centrocampo (3 volte), da calcio d'inizio (!!!!), da corner, da sdraiato per terra e di testa da fuori area (era alto 1,67m!!).

a me piace più Zico di Maradona, più pulito. Maradona con sta mano ci provava sempre, un furbetto. Poi il tributo che gli ha dato l'Italia, unico. Dovunque andasse veniva acclamato anche dalla squadra avversaria.

non c'è dubbio che come tecnica pura gente come Zico negli anni 80 ne aveva molta più di Messi, Ronaldo o Lewandosky, infatti Zico, Maradona, Platini facevano giocate di tacco, rovesciate molto più frequenti, scatti da fermo con dribbling fulminanti, ma tutto questo era permesso dal fatto che il gioco era ancora molto lento e frammentato...alla velocità di oggi non potrebbero più fare nulla di tutto quello che facevano negli anni 80, spiace dirlo ma era davvero un altro calcio, diverso dal "calcio moderno" attuale

Vamos lembrar q tinha 30 anos na época e que na temporada 84-85 foi trocado mt coisa dentro da udinese como treinador e etc Ricordiamo che all` epoca zico aveva 30 e nella stagione 84-85 molto a cambiato in udinese come allenatore e cosi via

Yes, it is, but R. Carlos can't score that many free kick goals as Zico, Juninho and others.

fz, do you know why Zico scored great between week 1 - 8 and between week 14 - 20. and he failled to score from 8 - 14 and week 20 - 30 he scored only 2 goals. Were it to do for the inyuries or was it the tired? Thanks mate!

Ele foi simplesmente vice artilheiro do campeonato italiano, ficando 1 gol atrás do artilheiro, sendo que teve 6 jogos a menos devido uma lesão. Como não conseguiu mostrar futebol ??? A Udinese tem bandeiras com a cara dele até hoje. Zico voltou ao Brasil por insatisfação com o projeto da Udinese, que começou a desmanchar o time e deixar a ideia do Scudetto de lado, daí voltou ao Flamengo, já que naquela época não existia essa diferença tática e econômica abissal entre futebol europeu e brasileiro, como existe hoje.

l’un des partenaires de l’Udinese était le président d’une grande multinationale de l’électroménager, la moitié de l’argent qu’il leur avait mis, l’autre moitié d’autres sponsors. Les Roms de Falcao ont également tenté de l'acheter, mais il avait déjà signé avec l'Udinese.
