The emperor was in denial about a lot of things. He really thought he treated his women right when in reality he trashed them all. His relationship with Ruyi was worse because they actually loved each other since youth. The emperor only understood when Ruyi showed him because words could never reach him. Ruyi took the stance, "I can show you better than I can tell you."

in the original novel, *Ruyi was physically exhausted* due to the final stage tuberculosis which she refused treatment, and even the ginseng Wei Yan'wan brought with her wouldn't have been enough
