"I often get asked by foreigners, 'Why are kimonos so long?'
Kimonos are designed to be adjustable to a certain degree to accommodate different heights and body shapes.
While kimonos are indeed long,the first step in putting one on is to adjust the length of the hem and secure it with a koshi-himo (hip cord).
The excess fabric is then neatly arranged into the "ohashori" and secured with a muna-himo（chest cord）.
In this way, people of different heights can wear the same kimono.
This adaptability also allows kimonos to be passed down from parents to children, and even worn when one's body shape changes somewhat."

着物は身長・体型に合わせて多少調整ができるようになっています。
着物は長いのですが、まず裾を合わせて腰紐で止めます。
そして余った部分は整えておはしよりを作り、胸紐で止めます。
こうして、多少身長が違っていても同じ着物を着ることができます。
親から子どもへ受け継ぐことができます。
体型が多少変わっても着ることもできます。」
