I think I need to add a little context to the "mother jokes". In Chinese culture, "your mom" is not a joke or tease, but a serious profanity, along with "his/her mom" and "f*** your mom". Especially when it's put in writing, plainly and explicitly, it's a heavy curse word that civilized people don't use unless you really mean it. I guess we can see from the poems how unhinged this guy was.

I wonder if offense toward "your mom" profanities is engrained deeply in Chinese DNA lol Edit: From what I've seen I'm not the only one who has such a strong reaction to that profanity cause I've seen other Chinese people go absolutely ballistic when they hear it

This period of Chinese history also provides important context for why Chinas government today is so authoritarian. The first half of the century was chaos for China. The lack of central government meant warlords exploiting their regions (as Sam mentioned) as well as lacking a unified direction for the country. That, combined with the civil war proved a prime opportunity for Japan to invade. Tens of millions dead during this period, either directly through war and corruption or indirectly through famines that were exacerbated by all the chaos. This taught the Chinese communists two big lessons: 1, keep the country unified to prevent that kind of chaos returning even if it means making a sham of freedoms. 2, keep foreign interference out of the country as much as you can

Just want to share a bit more info from Chinese sources about Zhang’s poem. A interview with one of Zhang’s daughter has she claim that Zhang hated writing and never did wrote those poem. Have another sourced study that pin point most of Zhang’s poem to poems either from earlier Qing dynasty joke books, or from sources written from 1960s. So whilst the poems are definately the coolest aspect of the story, it is likely that they are just tales to embellish Zhang’s story added in by writers later on.

Minor correction, at 4:20 Sam makes the common mistake of referring to positive punishment as negative reinforcement. In the context of operant conditioning schedules, "reinforcement" is anything that makes the target behavior more likely to recur whereas "punishment" is anything that makes it less likely to recur. "Positive" and "negative" in this context refer to whether something is done by adding a stimulus or taking it away. To use his diagram, the addition of a pleasant sensation like back scratching or an unpleasant sensation like a whip will make the shirtless gentlemen more likely to cut deals for each other and the tiger less likely to refuse to jump through the flaming hoop.

Actually the Qing Dynasty falls, in 1911 , the revoluationaries get backstabbed by Yuan Shikai the head of China's Beiyang army, the equiavelent of the Chinese imperial guards, the best equipped best trained army with its own navy in China. Yuan Shikai planned to establish his own dynasty but died of Uremia in 1916. then without its main leader his officers all rebelled and established their own armies , so China was effectively in civil war starting in 1917 with several mian warlord armies and hundreds of smaller ones. all fighting each other . also add to the mix revolutionary groups and criminals. the Chinese communists allied themselves with the KMT nationalists. to fight the warlords and after SUn Yat Sen died and Chiang Kai Shek too over who hated communists, he backstabbed the Chinese communists. in purges and encriclement campaigns in the late 20s to the early 30s.

Is it weird I got kind of hyped when I saw Sam's video yesterday? Also it's weird referring to someone as Sam when it's also my name lol.

If I ate gold, I'd be BMing into the spaghetti strainer singing "what would you do for a Klondike Bar," pretending to pan for gold in Alaska. Then I'd make a ring out of it and tell people I forged it in my colon.

There are restaurants in NYC that serve food wrapped in gold leaf for you to eat. It's expensive as hell, but whatever people want to waste their money on.

the Chinese civil war is probably the bloodiest civil war in history, and the 2nd bloodiest war in the 20th century. I think even bloodier than WW1. 1917 to 1949, In fact the Chinese civil war is not finished yet, the KMT is still alive in the renegade province Taiwan. its just a long intermission.

8:03 See this is how you fix the economy, you know how the meme was step one: print a lot of money step two: ? step 3: profit well turns out step 2 is just beat people up, we made up the concept of money, money only works if there's the implicit agreement that it works, so just make people agree by any means necesary 4Head
