It was done in a studio, you can add as many layers/tracks as you want....its jimmy playing both parts, each part was recorded separately......this song has 2 guitar parts, some songs have 3, or 4.....occasionally youll hear 2 voices, both are Robert .....he records one track, then goes back and records the second......when zep played live, Jimmy would have to choose which parts to play and emphasize

The chemistry of Led Zeppelin could not be replicated after the death of John Bonham in 1980... The trauma of losing a friend and bandmate affected all 3 surviving members... Jimmy Page tried starting a new band (The Firm) w/ Bad Company vocalist Paul Rodgers... only lasted 2 albums... then 1 solo album 'Outrider'... 1 album Coverdale.Page w/ Whitesnake vocalist David Coverdale in 1993. John Paul Jones (bass/ keyboards) left performing and produced albums for other artists... He did 1 record and play bass w/ the project Them Crooked Vultures, which featured Nirvana/ Foo Fighters drummer Dave Grohl and Josh Homme (vocals/ guitar) of Queens of the Stone Age. Robert Plant was never the same after John Bonham's death... He released his first solo album 'Pictures at Eleven' in 1982 and then 'The Principle of moments' in 1983... He started touring solo, but refused to play any Led Zeppelin songs live for nearly a decade as a solo singer. A Led Zeppelin set at Live Aid 1985 (w/ Plant, Jones and Page... Phil Collins on drums) was a 'disaster' (Jimmy Page refuses to release any of that set's footage). They did reunite to play a charity set in 2007 w/ Jason Bonham (John Bonham's son) on drums for charity, which was filmed and released. Robert Plant's music was also different from Zeppelin... his vocal delivery had also changed. He was more into more 'mature' adult contemporary vocals on his solo records and recently said he was not interested in performing hard rock music anymore. He also admitted it was painful performing Zeppelin songs and not seeing his friend John Bonham on drums... but he performs occasional Zeppelin songs in concert. Robert Plant & Jimmy Page did reunite in 1994 to record a semi-acoustic Zeppelin set as 'No Quarter'... They did tour together for a few years as Plant & Page, playing Zeppelin songs in concert... But the 1 album they did in 1998 ('Walking into Clarksdale') was NOT a Zeppelin-style record and sold disappointingly... In 1999, Robert Plant ended that collaboration w/ Jimmy Page and went back to his solo career.

Ok, I gotta say something here, because you asked the question and I think I can answer it as well as anyone. Plant's voice... over the years. Now, you can tell quite a lot by listening to his music down the years (which I have). But to be clear...I don't claim to know him... but he's local to me, and a friend of mine plays guitar for him. I've met him several times, I've seen him play a "stealth " gig to about 60 or 70 of us, really up close, and he once sat with myself and my daughter after she had just come off stage after playing a support set for Martin Barre. He had a quick vocal jam with my daughter. He doesn't sing that way anymore, but he's like... Well... He's a master and he has a superb ear. Not only that, he has a quite brilliant musical brain. He knows how to use what he's got creatively, and to great effect, regardless of his voice not being THAT voice. It's a bit like, I don't know...Maybe... You know how some sportsmen carry on their careers longer than others... Maybe they're not as fast or as powerful as they once were, but they can use their experience to know exactly how to deal with a situation for the best outcome ? Well he's a musical version of that. His control of/creative use of dynamic is just exquisite, and his age will never dull that.

I loved buying Zepplin albums in the 70s. I'd sit don in my room and play it all of the way through to make sure there were no scratches. The second time I played it I recorded it on Maxell IIS casette tapes and played the tapes after that. I still have those records that were only played once. Now I have the box set on CD and play that. I just can't express how great these entire albums are.

As such an obvious true LZ fan have you seen "The song remains the same" movie yet? Bonham in his dragster alone is worth it. Robert Plant is the quintessential rock 'n' roll front man. A thousand bands started on the back of this one band. They picked up guitars, drums and begged their friend who could sing to join the band. And they played and they learned. And rock 'n' roll carried on. All because of Led Zepplin and Plant, Page, Bonham and Jones. And could it be an overdub?

Jimmy did a lot of multi tracks in the studio. A lot of guitarist did. That's my theory on how guitar players evolved over the years by trying to cover multitracked songs like this guitarist became faster and more diverse on the instruments year over year because they were trying to cover as many parts as possible and still making it sound accurate at the same time.

A common studio recording technique in Rock is to layer different tracks of vocals, guitars etc. it’s usually the same guy doing different things and then overdubbing them to have a fuller sound on the record. Jimi’s only one guy, so if he wants to play rhythm and lead at the same point, they just record and layer those tracks together. You’ll hear a lot of this. The better bands can pull off these songs live and you won’t know the difference that it’s just one guy playing onstage. They kind of trade off a little and do both live. Mainly stick to the solos of course.

Oh good, you got around to finding out about referencing the intro to the Little Richard song and then Jimmy Page doing the Chuck Berry reference. But still man, it's just such a great rock and roll song. They really bring it. m.kzread.info/dash/bejne/iWityaZwm7uxYJc.html If you want to hear a very similar energy that I really really loved just as well, and it's from the same year, check out from the very first Foghat album, their cover of the Chuck Berry song Maybelline. You'll get that same feeling. These bands in the early seventies knew who they were respected and they were constantly paying homage. But they were also in their own new element and rocking out in their own way. But anyway you cannot be disappointed with this Foghat Maybelline Chuck Berry covered. I promise you. If you don't move around on this? Something's very wrong with your vagus nerve or something, lol.

This was essentially Page's group. He wanted something he called a 'guitar army'. Jimmy plays it all. You will eventually hear some other tracks where this is very clear that he piles guitar track over guitar track. It's pretty awesome. And -- He would occasionally lurk about the stage garnering some attention, but I agree that Plant sold the group. I don't believe this group would have been as strong without any single one of these individuals. The most unsung hero is always the quiet John Paul Jones. He was the bassist and keyboardist - or anything else.
