Zepotha and Goncharov - The Worst and Best of the Internet

the saddest part of zepotha for me is that they chose one of the best, wildest genres for the movie and did basically nothing with it :/ 80s horror was wild! gross! with a wide arrangement of subgenres. but they just went with the most boring overused settings. makes me sooo sad as a horror fan.

LITERALLY!! plus zepotha, the title, just sounds way more like a 70s obscure arthouse film, which i think would be cool af. but nah, lets make it a teen slasher that doesn't really do much with the genre anyway. also ive seen a few bts facts, and most of it is just like 'oh it was too gay to be released' or 'theres like 20 sequels', like babe, this is a horror movie, this is an 80s horror movie, give me fun facts about the special effects or how stressful the filming process was. like please theres so much more that could be done than just "you look like borbo from zepotha uwu"

@@twitchykirby509 give me a "did you know that the body suit in X scene was so hot you can see sweat dripping out the edges?" like in the evil dead or "the actor actually broke their foot there" like lotr. bc if its an 80s horror movie you KNOW theyre making that thing with a budget of two cents and a piece of lint and absolutely no regard for health and safety laws.

Something else about Gonchrov compared to Zepotha was the fact that there was commitment to the lost bit. No one was really trying to make it monetizable or real. It also made sure to use the aesthetics of Martin Scorsese filmography. It was also engaged by people who were genuinely into film itself as a medium and art. Zepotha is a fad more or less.

Goncharov was fun! It was something that existed only through fan-work. Because of this, anyone who posted anything about it was just as responsible for it's creation as anything else. The only time that any and all fan work is canon. It was an impromptu collaborative project. Zepotha isn't that for a number of reasons. It's "created" by one person, and everyone else is supporting that one person's in joke. If you found out about Goncharov, you could add to it and be part of the joke. But if you find out about Zepotha, it's from a person and promoting her. Do you like her? Do you want to do this favor to her? Do you like her music? These are all questions that would be in your way of joining in. In the end there will be one thing that is "canon" and it will be whatever song/songs she creates.

I want to throw my metaphorical hat into the ring but i think theres also two other reasons why Gonchrov worked and Zepotha doesn’t. 1. the way tumblr is how its formatted, because tumblr is a long text based website it allows more information on one place while TikTok is a video site and 2. Zepotha is meant to be ‘lost’ due to its outwardly queer characters, compared to Gonchrov where its more homoerotic subtext with fake analysis which trumped over the fake plot posts. Idk maybe I’m looking into this way to much

  • @moistwrmonastring1017

    @moistwrmonastring1017

    Жыл бұрын

No no, you have a point! Homoerotic subtext is my absolute favourite thing ever, it’s like my weak point, which made Goncharov so fun to me! Zepotha being “too queer” as a not real, inside joke film is weird to me! Especially the highlight on a trans character (singular?) being in the fake film. As a trans person, it feels targeted! I love older horror films, one of my favourite films of all time is Alien 1979, so seeing a fake horror movie about queer characters SHOULD be a fun experience, but it just isn’t. It’s too targeted in my eyes, I’m not a fan

Some people on Tumblr are trying to defend Zepotha on the basis that they're just kids having fun; problem is, it's not, it's a marketing strategy. If TikTok kids had just made up their own movie, like they did with Ratatouille the Musical, it would be fine, but it's not, its someone capitalizing on Internet trends

Adding onto everyone else's takes about like 1.) the platforms' roles in how each was engaged with and thus the believability. There's also a factor in how each is being treated BY the people partaking, and how it can seriously affect people that either may not be clued in or may be susceptible to harm caused by this form of joke. As broken as we always say it is, the tagging system was a huge factor in why Goncharov was never seen as too obnoxious or damaging -- since the concept was made to literally gaslight people into believing a fake film really existed, we'd always have unreality tagged as a way to filter things out for anyone susceptible to psychosis or other such reality-altering disorders, and when asked we'd actually just. Explain that it wasn't real and a tumblr in-joke, because the joke isn't fun if people are genuinely getting hurt. The joke only extended far enough to where people who would be negatively affected by it would be safe, and with the lack of a (functional) algorithm it never snuck it's way into places it shouldn't be. It was treated as a silly joke meant to build a community and inspire creativity and it succeeded in that regard. It was a showcase of the perfect site-wide improv among strangers and community, a "yes, and?" done to the best degreee where every piece built upon each other to the point where REAL ACTORS AND DIRECTORS GOT IN ON IT. The issue with TikTok is that it's the exact opposite. From what I've seen and heard (because I refuse to touch TikTok myself), these comments are everywhere and places they frankly shouldn't be (one case I've heard of being under someone's literal ED vent) because the participants don't care about what the actual content is, it's about following whatever this new trend is -- no matter how invasive it gets. The issue stemming from TikTok's tagging system is there is no way to block or blacklist tags, thus making the entire Zepotha trend completely unsafe for users who may experience psychosis or be triggered by unreality content, and with an algorithm that pushes it to you repeatedly (let's be honest, the "not interested" button never works) the site becomes completely unusable without that risk. In addition, the way TikTok users will FULLY insist on its reality status and go so far as to completely lean into full gaslighting if someone isn't part of the in-joke or, again, is harmed by unreality content is seriously an issue. The project was never a way to inspire community or creativity like Goncharov, it was a scheme to promote a music artist (now doing the literal one thing you SHOULDN'T DO; seriously that film competition is a whole other conversation of wrong) turned into yet another annoying trend. (Evidently the bits of lore being produced and organised by the Discord server and Google.doc may not even been the canon take since the creator has repeatedly shot down ideas she wasn't personally fond of completely going against the "yes and" nature of these sorts of experiments). The lack of focus or even dumb passion is one of the hugest reasons Zepotha will likely remain one of their (multiple. and I mean MULTIPLE. seriously this isn't the first time) failed marketing attempts. This was. A longer comment that I normally make for ANYTHING, but I've been in a lot of circles with the issues mentioned that have expressed similar, so it feels important to bring awareness to (considering a lot of people usually DON'T think about how it may affect those with psychosis.) Just my two cents on it from the perspective of someone who was around for Goncharv's start and saw how it played out for these communities. :3 (Recognising the user in the pic was WILD, internet neighbours. Tumblr moment.)

You summarized my thoughts on it perfectly! I think my main issue with this trend was summarized really well by a TikTok commenter, back when it was in full swing: Goncharov was fueled by a desire to create. Zepotha was fueled by a desire to destroy. The point of Zepotha was just to drag anyone who wasn’t involved, gaslight them and make it their problem. It always pissed me off so bad but I just got called a buzzkill for it💀

Another good point is that goncharov started as just a meaningless name that could be built up while zepotha started as a prank/advertisement knowingly sent out to grow. Zepotha had a lot less space to grow as it was already set in stone as an 80's movie due to mostly being brought up as a reference for outfits.

as someone who witnessed goncharov zepotha just feels very unbelievable and corporate, at least people seem to be having fun but it doesnt work the same, it being made in the 80s and having perfect queer rep is something that isnt very plausible, due to the fact the queer community was really under attack in the 80s, so a film like such wouldnt be able to pass production or anything, with goncharov it was more believable with the homoeroticsubtext that is more believable for the time. thats not me saying any queer stuff couldnt exist in the 80s is just that if you are trying to convince me that an 80s horror film with good queer rep existed and isnt super duper popular with news articles and essays written and at least one fan shirt or tumblr blog and passed completey under the radar i wont believe you.

The best summary of Goncharov I've found is a Tumblr video composed entirely of screenshots, starting with the tag on the shoe and ending with Francesca Scorsese texting her dad "hey did you see this?" and him replying "Yes. I made that film years ago." The cuts happen in increasingly faster time to the progression of the soundtrack, which is the can-can. It captures the mood perfectly

i was there for both the original shoe post and the explosion of goncharov on tumblr, so seeing tiktok stumble through their own fake movie is strange. as far as ive seen through osmosis, they're not going about it the same way which is why its not as coherent/put together. when goncharov blew up, you couldnt go 3 posts without seeing a gifset or a long ass analysis or fanart or the movie poster. there were specific scenes everyone agreed upon and each character had a defined personality + arc (i wont doubt that it got a little confusing sometimes but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ its part of the fun). i think bc tiktok is only video, it can't actually establish the world of "zepotha" besides naming characters and music, which is why they had to make that google doc. that all to say, i hope they have fun with it and stop claiming they started goncharov

Reminds me of a discord server i was briefly part of years ago, with this project of creating a fake fandom and start blogging about it on tumblr as if it was legit. It was fun for the first ten minutes or so until it quickly devolved into something that was both waaaay too organised to still be fun and not focused enough to be of be of any real interest for someone who genuinely enjoys storytelling (like, people where given roles but the plot points and tropes were random shit that were voted on). I was made a mod and quit the server alltogether under an hour. i don't think it lasted more than a few day and I never saw any of the results on tumblr. It just wasn't the way to go about it. Fast forward to 2022 and we saw the perfect exemple of what spontaneity and actual story telling skills (coupled with self awareness, as it was a loving parody of the way fandom works on tumblr) can actually accomplish.

Well, that's not true, a book was created later to fill demand, but it wasn't meant to exist. It exposed a lot of people at the time who just nodded and talked about things like they actually consumed them, when they didn't. *AND IT WORKED* again, it worked so well, that the real book being made was almost a cover-up. Thought you'd like some interesting lore on this subject.

Guys remember that Collab Quinnamon had with that one guy that redesigned scraptrap, and had the undeniably canon lore videos for fnaf. It was the ooftroop. quinnamon and him almost had this sorta version of Springtrap and Vanny. But in this version Springtrap has to get used to pronouns since Vanny in this one is He/Him.

I heard about Zepotha but not Goncharov surprisingly. Weird how things like this happen online lol, but I adore it cause people are just feeling inspired by one prompt and take that in so many ways. It's cool to me. And the creator of Zepotha is hosting a short film contest to find the canon version!!! And they are offering a cash prize.

A cash prize that might not even be enough to make up for the cost of making the short film in the first place.

Competitions like that are really predatory usually. I have never seen a cash prize that properly values the work put in, so it's just a way to get fans to produce discounted content as opposed to properly compensating someone for their work. Not to mention usually you lose all rights to the work after it's sent in so all the people who didn't win get paid nothing for content that can then be used for profit. Hopefully this will be an exception to at least the second thing. If there's fair pay for the creator I will be happily surprised.

I think you have some really good points- but I do have a counter-argument. Even though Zepotha was initially created as a marketing scheme it is impossible to deny the creativity that it has spurred on the internet. People are writing songs, making animatics, drawing fan art, writing fan fic, and making films!! A person who created an album, used their album to spur more creativity online. The domino affect of creation is the beauty of both of Zepotha and Goncharov. I do agree that Zepotha does seem forced and can get spam-like with the amount of comments but I find it hard to completely ridicule Zepotha and what it has done. Sure there may not be one plot line- but the variation plays into peoples different interpretations and inspires them in new ways. The lack of solidity in plot arguably opens the door for more creativity. It is a fake movie, so why does it need one plot? Who wrote the rules? Goncharov was a super fun meme and pointedly different from Zepotha. Though Goncharov came first and is similar to Zepotha, there is no rule saying that one must follow in the same structure as the other. Back to the creativity that it has spurred. You mentioned the film festival and putting money in for a prize and how that felt strange. I do agree that it would be a little strange if no one had been creating things under the Zepotha meme prior to her post about the festival. However, people were already making shorts, trailers, mood videos, and even full films. The film festival is yet another way to uplift these smaller creators. The costs and time people choose to put into the film depends on their own choice and passion. Yes the film contest only adds to the marketing scheme- but so what? She has the right to promote her work and she is doing so in a way that uplifts other artists and creators under one trend. She may come out with the most clout but other creators are finding way more attention under this trend than they did before and getting more exposure to their other work. The harm Zepotha has done is so miniscule compared to the amount of creativity and joy that has come out of it. Anyways I just wanted to share my piece. I loved the video and your stand point on it! I find the whole things super interesting

So what if it was originally marketing? the fans are creating lore which could eventually be made into cool shortfilms. Goncharov may have been made before, but no one in the Zepotha fan base is actively copying or stealing from it, they just share the same concept. Also, the film competition only rewarding one film isn't that bad lol, most film festivals do that i think

I have a consistent habit of making goncharov references to my girlfriend. They are not that in tune with tumblr culture. We went to see a movie and there was a trailer for a Scorcese film, so I was like “omg Martin Scorcese, director of the 1973 masterpiece Goncharov, the greatest mafia movie ever made!?” And they were like “I have never seen that” and I was like “oh, it’s not real. I’ll explain later” and then I forget. And then I see something Goncharov adjacent in the wild and the cycle repeats.
