Until Endwalker, I always held the contentious opinion of having Stormblood be my favorite expansion. A lot of people focus on variables that I understand, like pacing or Lyse. However, Stormblood's exploration of colonialism and the effects it has on a country being overseen by a powerful imperial state is unprecedented in a Final Fantasy game. As someone from a Latin American country, I can SERIOUSLY see the real world implications of the events in Stormblood and as someone who moved to the United States at a young age, I can relate to the disconnect that Lyse had with her own fellow Ala Mhigans because she grew up in a completely different environment. She wants to relate and belong but she simply doesn't share the same experiences, whereas someone like Raubahn might.

I watched him do the first StB primal live, and he loved it. What I love about watching Preach go through the game is that you can tell he's either well read, or well educated in story analysis. Like he studied literature or something. It adds so much to the experience when you're in tune to it, rather than just following plot beats in the way you would a pulp novel like Forgotten Realms, Dragonlance, or whatever it is the kids read these days.

I just think her story was underdeveloped and there were areas that could have been developed more that would have made her arc much better and Hien's inspiration on that journey more impactful. Lyse was idealistic, much like Alphinaud. Naïve in much the same way. Both wanted to change something grand in scale. But only one really endured the bitter taste of failure before growing learning and growing from that as a character. That would probably be my best comparison.

@@KratukSC , I understand that comparison, I do, but with all do respect it's a very bad comparison. I do agree with you that Lyse is idealistic. The better comparison is with Alisaie, and it's still a poor comparison. The reason is simple, both Alisaie and Alphinaud are prodigies. Even regardless of that fact, both of them group in Sharlyan, the intellectual capital of the world that is the source. Lyse is from Ala Gannha and was supposedly brought to Sharlyan by Yda where the latter was formerly educated and trained. Lyse on the other hand was perhaps too young and not at all as competent as either Alphinaud nor Alisaie. Much like Lyse, Alisaie was a bit idealistic and it nearly cost her her life in her encounter with the warriors of darkness. Before that however, Alisaie was very naive during the whole bahamut arc. Fortunately for Alisaie we got that arc, and we saw her develop. Lyse meanwhile was always in the backdrop all the way through ARR and HW.

Going around with Lyse and Alisae is honestly one of my favorite parts of the game. As a woman, it was a "hanging out with the girls" sort of adventure, and I loved it. I do feel like Lyse's character could have been written better, but I overall liked her throughout SB. SE, when are we getting her outfit?? The Lakshmi trial is one of my favorites, and one of the most beautiful boss fights I've ever had the pleasure of doing. The whole fight is magical, and the BGM is one of my favorites in the game. I really liked the majority of SB, including liking lots of characters. I'm only a small way into the final area of EW (I had to take a break), so I can't comment on how a certain someone turns out, but I think SB had lots of characters to like (Hien, Gosetsu, Yugiri, Sadu, etc.), and lots of characters to hate (Zenos, Asahi, Fordola, etc.). I think overall SB really cemented that feeling of being a hero. You get to know and help a lot of cultures, and also make lots of friends and enemies. You even get some people to change sides. I want to say my character felt far more impactful than in HW. Maybe I just feel that way because I'm deep into EW. But looking back, things really do tie together. You understand more, like you said.

Hmm I didn't get why people get mad on Lyse for hiding herself as Yda at first, but then I realized that I didn't really think of myself as "close" to the Scions at that time. In ARR you really only work as the Scion's contract executioner almost all of the time. Whatever interaction we had with the group was for meetings and menial stuff. It's only through Heavensward that we "journeyed" together albeit only with Tataru and Alphi, and mostly with Alphi. I say it's only through the end of Heavensward and through Stormblood that I felt that I finally forged a connection with the rest of the team by finding them and journeying with them across the realm.

I didnt so much have a problem with Lyse coming forth and telling us the truth and all that implies. I had a far, FAR bigger problem that neither she nor Papalymo tried to contact us - and no, Papalymo sending a letter is NOT enough. We thought them dead. We though something terrible had happened for an entire expansion - and they SEND A SINGLE LETTER??!!! So, yeah, I was more upset about that. Same with Thancred who stayed in the wilderness instead of getting his ass back to the Scions. I mean, I understand that they were kinda indebted to the Resistance for helping them, hiding them and all, but if we take a look at how long in Eorzea-time the expansion took I would guess at the very least several months. Several months in which they didnt come back, in which we had to fight on our own, in we thought everyone had perrished. Sure, we did well enough, but still. This is supposed to be a family. And Yda and Papalymo failed big time here. In my estimate this weights heavier than Yda turning out to be Lyse - thats a private matter, thats personal, I wont pry. Everyone has secrets and everyone should be comfortable to have them for whatever reasons and maybe share them at some point - or not. I dont begrudge Lyse, but I was pissed to find out they were alive and well AND DIDN'T F***ING SHOW UP. Wow, I suppose I took this little part of the story way more serious than I gave it credit for ^^° Also, edit: Yda/Lyse is not a monk, she's a pugilist :P A pugilist with a monk-LB3, who learns stuff about monks at the end of Shadowbringers. I really did not enjoy Stormblood for a few reasons. I don't enjoy the dragon lady stereotype, so Yotsuyu had an uphill battle to begin with. 4.3's content wrenched her away from a plot line that had me liking her only to turn her into a character from an angsty teen fanfic. The sympathy bating in the phase transition of her fight felt insulting at that point. I found Zenos boring as he really wasn't a character. He was just a thing that was present and won the fights with him because the game said so. Splitting the story like they did really caused some whiplash with me. I barely started to get into Ala Mihgo when they slam on the breaks and now we're in Doma for most of the expansion, only to return to Ala Mihgo as almost an afterthought.

Zenos is an amazing character, my favorite villain. I think a lot of long time players got swept up in the “Zenos/Stormblood sucks” general opinion that took hold back then. Therefore many recent players, especially streamers, really enjoy the whole SB arc and it appears surprising- but I bet if long time players went back and re-experienced the story again, they may change their points of view. I am loving all the love for SB, as HW/SB were 1a and 1b for me, until EW of course. So this has been great to see the newer folks give it some love

Zenos is a simple vilain that only exist to make the plot move, the problem is that he overstays his welcome for way too long, characters like that need to do their thing fast to make the protagonists have something to do and then leave stage (like they did with Fandaniel), so if they stay for too long you start to see how shallow they actually are, and they start to become a bit an annoyance instead of a efficient plot device. but at least everything gets wrapped up well in the end.

SB was really the first game that started hitting those high notes that people love in ShB and EW, if only they had read the dialogue. I think SB's biggest weakness that I can recall is that they assigned all the important speeches to scenes without voice acting. It also structured a great deal of its story around setting up plot lines for post-game, so that the MSQ for the expansion itself doesn't really do a lot. Another thing is that many of the people I've talked to about SB didn't like how powerless the main cast felt for the majority of the game. But they were oblivious to how powerless the main cast is to the general of eulmore in ShB, for 95% of the expansion MSQ, before you steamroll him in a solo instance and hes not mentioned again.

See, I disagree with a lot of the opinions on Yda/Lyse. But part of that is because of the books I've read, the games I've played, and the movies I've watched. I am completely and utterly shocked that anyone was surprised that Yda or Urianger had secrets. They were wearing masks all through ARR. Anyone who has ever TOUCHED a comic book knows that someone with a mask has something to hide. Sure, they may be on your side, but that doesn't mean they don't have secrets. (On that note, the people who get upset at Urianger's double agent routine clearly are Superman fans, rather than Batman fans.) As for Yda turning out to be Lyse? The story of the kid wanting to carry on her big sister's legacy, because her sister and the Scions are all she has? That's like half the tragic rogue backstories in D&D. And the Scions all knowing, but allowing her to keep the charade? That's their way of helping a friend who wasn't ready to deal with her loss. Her making mistakes with the Ala Mighans? That's straight out of real life. The former refugees come back with the 'liberating' forces, and find that the populace is, for the most part, just trying to keep their heads down and keep alive. You see it all the time in military history. Hell, head on down to Florida, and I guarantee that you'll find lots of people who are WAY more invested in getting the Castro regime removed from Cuba than people who actually live in Cuba. If this showed up in a book or movie, I don't think anyone would have an issue with it. The only reason people have problems with it is because it is in a video game, and specifically and RPG, and people have been conditioned by games to always be the hero, you're always the good guys, everyone loves you, no one lies to you, you can trust what the NPCs tell you. And that is a failing as far as writing goes, to the point where, unless you're in a game like LA Noir, you don't even get the OPTION to doubt whether someone's telling the truth to you. Anyone with two brain cells put together could have seen that the Crystal Braves were going to betray us, but we couldn't do anything, because of the on-rails story. It would have been so easy to just kill the Lalafels that get in your way and stamp out the petty politics, but you have to sit back and let things go from bad to worse in Ul'dah, because it is an on-rails story. The story is good, but so far the only thing that surprised me was when Lolorito turned out to not be a complete prick.

Lyse has a problem when it comes to ‘being a stranger in a familiar land’ and dealing with stuff that not alot of people can relate to in real life. It’s funny that I read that a lot of people who are from countries like Ala that were oppressed enjoy Lyse and see her as realistic character. Even though I think like the rest she has problems.

@@R.-.W Indeed! Lyse's problems are basically a more extreme version of the 'you can't go home again' effect. You spent your childhood in one place, went off to school, worked, and when you come back to the old neighborhood or the small town you came from, everything is just... different, and the behaviors you learned elsewhere just "ain't how things are done around here". Lyse is a very relatable character if you have traveled, even if you aren't from an oppressed country. Sure, she has problems. That's what makes her realistic.

The worse thing about Lyse is that she took away the character of Yda. Yda was a fun companion, a loveable idiot that provides levity in many situations. But Lyse removed all of that and she became extremely bland after that. In the big picture, Yda wasn’t a big deal, she is there for flavour, this expansion would have been better if Alisaie took the spotlight, which makes more sense because they are more intriguing. It was a bit too much when we just had Alisaie back the previous patch then Papalymo dies and now a new character replaces someone we know. We could have had the same story if Yda was still Yda, and limit her role only in the Ala Mhigo resistance instead of having her in Othard as well. You kinda see that SE acknowledge Lyse being a mistake when her role in later expansion being greatly diminished. I mean there are moments when her former involvement with the Scions could have been something to be used, but they totally glossed over it because that would mean involving her.

Lyse gets moved to a City State leader role and at that points gets used in the same way as every other person in that position. Also just because her involvement could conceivably used doesn't mean it would be worthwhile to show in the game. We could call on Aymeric or Hien for nearly anything yet we don't. Why? Did SE rrealize those characters were "mistakes". You are searching for justifications in your dislike of a character that no one in game or on the dev team dislikes.

@@DemonLordSparda Yep, she flat out leaves the Scions because she now has a country to help run, and that’s also a reason as to why she doesn’t get pulled into the First. And also minor SPOILERS for ENDWALKER anyone! She has a few prominent scenes where she does show she will help out in quests, even taking the initiative that the resources for the important project in Ala aren’t enough and heads to the Shroud to assist them since they don’t have a strong army. She is fully remembered in the story, even more than Hien.

The biggest problem with Lyse's character is that she never learns from her mistakes... She just blames someone else, moves on, and then repeats the same mistakes for you to deal with again. It feels like her entire character exists solely to screwup in ways that drive the plot's conflict, which comes off as super annoying and kind of lazy. Like, for example, early on she overestimates her abilities and charges Zenos, which gets Y'shtola basically deleted from the expansion... But instead of learning to know her abilities and control herself, we flash forward to the end of the xpac, and she's opting to charge at Primals, which makes us have to do additional bosswork to keep her from getting tempered while we fight it. Most XIV characters learn from their faults and grow as characters, but Lyse exists in a vacuum of plot convenience. -.-

I don't like Lyse because everything is handed to her just because her dad was important. Honestly I felt really bad and just made me like her less that M'naggo got shafted as resistance leader just because the last leader said so in his dying breath. She even has flavor text before handing the MSQ where she goes "I guess Lyse is commander now..... Well, if Curtis said so it must be respected". I thought she would get humbled by Hien but when I thought she would learn from him when they are stuck together, nothing came of it. Makes it even more hilarious and just silly that she got less screen time on SB and now on EW. Like freaking pirate boy from a patch got more voiced lines than her. They are aware most people don't like her. Wish they actually improve or kill characters instead of going for what the vocal fanbase wants, it's a problem Square has not only in 14 but the other mainline FF titles too. As much as I liked EW and it's a very satisfying conclusion, it does seem super safe for the most part.

People who say Ala Mhigo is boring and "filler" clearly haven't lived in a country which was colonized and brutalized by the colonial powers. The theme, the depression among the people, the survival instinct that makes you side with the colonizer, these are very real problems that people in colonized countries have had to deal with. So if for example you're from Britain, France, Netherlands, Spain or Portugal and you think the story is going nowhere, congratulations, you're the Garlean empire in the story; your nation is the one that brutalized other countries to conscript people for their wars, rape the people and the environment for your benefit.

"You're the Garlean Empire" really hits the nail on the head. That's expounded on in the Garleans' attitudes in Endwalker. Clannish and completely unsympathetic of other people's plights. So much so that the plights of those colonized people don't even register to them. I didn't really think it was possible for people to be so blind, but it makes sense that the majority of a colonial state would represent the will of their nation. That the people in that nation should embody the unrepentant colonizer.
