Thank you to everyone for your comments. Zenyatta is so special and her story, especially the ending, is one of unparalleled heart. The quotes used are from trainers, announcers, turf writers and handicappers throughout her career.

Absolutely fabulous! Maybe it's ridiculous that I cry with Mike. I don't care. *sitting here with tears rolling down* As John Shirreffs said after the 2009 BCC, "What a great, great filly, huh?" Indeed!!! ♥

I get tears in my eyes when I see the still shot of the finish of the 2010 BCC. That is tear-worthy. One more stride and a whole new story. A 6 y/o filly against a loaded field of younger males yet she loses by only a half a head after weaving through traffic. Blame got a perfect trip and even Gomez said he ran the best race of his life that day. Who was the best horse in the field? Zenyatta, hands down.

For all of Mike Smith's modesty & class, as the years go by, Zenyatta will be remembered not just for being a great horse but for having Mike Smith, a great, great jockey up on her. If there's been a more heartfelt moment in racing history than Mike telling us that "it hurts more than I can explain," I don't know what it is. His love for Zenyatta is as beautiful as the horse herself.

The one loss was her greatest race. I don't know of any horse that ever raced that could have come from that far back (18-20 lengths), under the lights, on a track they never raced on, and come within inches of winning. As one Australian trainer said (I am paraphrasing) "It was the greatest race I have ever seen by a horse that didn't win." I totally agree. She finally shut up the naysayers with that one race. Even Beyer had to acknowledge her greatness. There will never be another like her.

Awesomely done..great tribute! Love that the naysayers were included. I remember all the snide comments before the first BC... Race #20 made me cry ...because history books won't reflect at all what she did because of that couple inches...you illustrated how special she is perfectly! I was fortunate enough to see her run twice and just being 15 feet away from her when she was in the paddock area was awe inspiring, She's the best I've ever seen in person...probably the best I ever will see.

I've watched her races live numerous times! In both BC Classics she had traffic to deal with - and she managed to dig deep! Coming up inches short in this year's Classic does NOT diminish her! Not one bit!! I love her and always will.

All horses have personalities to those that work with them closely. Zenyatta's bursts through the television screen to the whole world. She makes all of us feel like we know her. She clearly loves running, she loves the clapping and cheering. She poses for the camera and dances to the post. God, I love this mare.

This is an an amazing & extremely beautiful tribute to Zenyatta that became known as the unbelievable, "The Great Zenyatta". As I watched with appreciation for her famous come from behind in her amazing 19 straight wins but her final 20th race shows her heart & determination to push from unbelievable odds to overcome to such a close finish. Zenyatta earned her place in history with The Greats TB. Zenyatta is "A Living Legend" we got to enjoy in our lifetime.

Thank you so much for bringing her to life, she is and always will be the most wonderful horse that lives in my heart. She brought me to know Kari from Animals Rock 4 Love, and we met in Louisville, to see her final race. I cherish those memories because I lost my Mother and this horse kept me going. I don't care who breaks her records, she is and will always live in my heart. I got so many people interested in her because she stays on my screen saver at work. God love her and her son, Michele.

The reason Zenyatta is awesome is not so much that she went 19-19 and was seeking her 20th win. She is awesome because of her personality and her HEART. I have been following thoroughbred racing my entire life and I have never felt like this about a horse. I have admired jockeys, I have been impressed by equine athleticism. But Zenyatta. So much more than a great racehorse. So much. She's in a class by herself.

So right. I think she only ran on dirt one other time in the Apple Blossom. Not only was it the dirt but it was wet. Had been raining. She leaves the gate last so was pelted by stinging wet sand and almost pulled up and stopped. That is why she was thirty lengths back in the backstretch. The BC 2010 was her greatest race in my opinion. She had to overcome incredible odds to get to the wire when she did. No other horse in that field could have made up thirty lengths, work through bad traffic and still lose the race by a nose!

Zenyatta has an excellent pedigree, with no in-breeding. Mr. Prospector, Raise A Native, Princequillo, Gold Digger, Halo, Hoist The Flag. She is also HUGE in size. 17.2 hands and 1200 lbs. during her racing career. Second best filly EVER, behind only Ruffian. Period.

Shes a different kind of runner, but she diffinately deserves her places as one of the greatest along with all the other greats, Shes never failed and even though she lost her very last race, she still didnt fail because she ran the same way as she always had she hardly lost, a few more strides she would have won! But she ran consistainly thats greatness because thats rare to find a horse like that. Shes got a body like ruffian because shes soo big, and shes almost black! she runs outbeats everyone of those great horses and she beats them alll, alllllllllllll the way from the back! DEAD Last all that ground she makes up in a matter of seconds is amazing! And her sweet bold personality so much character in her eyes you cant help but notice her!

Comparing Zenyatta with Black Caviar is apples and oranges. Two completely different racing styles...and racing distances. I love them both! Zenyatta was nearly 20 lengths behind and lost strides in the 2010 BCC due to traffic and yet was only one stride from winning. That's why she is still so beloved. ♥ Blame's jockey, Garret Gomez, said he would not want a rematch with Z because he knew how lucky he was that day.

She is the best. She ran at the classic distances and beat the best males of 2009. They never got to the bottom of her.She ran only as fast as she had to in order to beat them. Ruffian was great and it is hard to know if she would have beaten Zenyatta for first place if she had lived. But as it stands, she does not. Zenyatta cloesd from last, always. To win 19 races, and at the classic distance is otherworldly. No other filly has done that. She circled the field consistently, also otherworldy.

Poetic and I love the use of Crowned Prince. I'd feel better if Affirmed, Alydar, Slew and Bid were replaced by Ribot, Sea Bird II, Kelso and Seabisquit - but thats JMO. Finally, a mare worthy of joining Ruffian but considering Z's record vs Ruf's 8 race records and 2 track records in 10 race career, + 8 length margin of victory; a triple Tiara I'd say Ruffian is in a different class of greatness - she ran within herself - like Secretariat. she lead at every pole of every race - truly awesome!

You are exactly right. European horses will do just fine in the USA, as long as they run on turf. I have never liked the artificial surface. It was used only to appease the PETA protestors. Running on dirt is a different story. Different training regimen, and much more "vertical" gallop for the dirt horses. Secretariat is one of the few horses who handled both turf and dirt masterfully. Tragedies like what happened to George Washington are the result of turf horses running on bad dirt tracks.

It's sort of ironic that Quality Road acted up so badly and 'took the studs,' pardon the pun, and wouldn't go in the gate in the 2009 BCC and had to be scratched due to scraping his leg, turns out to be the very horse that stalled in front of her in 2010 and cost her the race.

Overseas horses, particularly European Horses, do very well in the USA. Of course they don't do well on the dirt because they aren't used to it, but they do well on the turf. They also done well on the artificial surface that was used for a couple of years although that got changed after Ravens Pass won the Classic. But obviously on the dirt they don't go well as they aren't used to it.

She has always run farther, except in one race when she came up on the inside...in the BCC09, she was 6 wide...just incredible. I think those that have been critical wanted her to be pushed into more races against the males, and the fact that she wasn't just seemed to irritate them. They used up Rachel in 1 year...and some think that was just great. But, I, for one, am glad we had Zen over her 3+ year career...she risked everything twice against the boys...and she beat all the boys, except 1.

You are right about the mile and a quarter. Zenyatta would reel everyone in at a mile and a half. She was a distance horse. The longer race favored her style. She was a slow starter but her stride kept picking up and the last quarter she would finally hit her top gears and you could just see her start to explode. She was running Blame into the ground at the wire and would have swept past him and left him in the dust in the next eighth. Even Gomez said she would have beaten Blame if the race had gone a little more her way down the backstretch and Quality Road had not held her up.

this race 2010 breeders cup was lost by being too far behind which was jockey estimating she could run like she had a yr before but a tr older is a lost in of what she had a yr before so this cost her the race instead of first was second. a horse of greatness and tribute to jockey in handling in all the race won.

While they are very good horses (Zenyatta being the strongest out of the pair of them). You are forgetting that the world renowned best horse at the time of their careers was in actual fact a Colt. Sea the Stars.

Saying that Black Caviar won easy races is probably the poorest way to proove your point, more when Black Caviar competed outside of Australia and won a GI in Royal Ascot. I have to agree with you in the Dirt vs Turf surface topic. Anyways, I do think that Zenyatta is a better racehorse than Black Caviar, not because all of what you said, but because Zenyattas' racing style. Its really challenging for a closer to win every single race, what she did almost everytime. Plus she was a sweetheart.

Any top 10 list zenyatta isn’t in the maker of that list needs to get their head checked! Z is every bit as great as ruffian I don’t know how you could put one in front of the other ??? 2 of the greatest filly’s of all time! Now you have to start to think of Z’s half sister Winx with her incredible run of 33 wins in a row, the girls are getting better! Watch out boys!

It's not that she lost. It's that she won 19 out of 20 races and was 20 lengths behind and only lost by a few inches. In her lifetime, this mare has only lost by a few inches.
