I think it more so means the attention you'll get when on drugs. I don't have a good example for euphoria bc I didn't watch it that closely and also agree nothing about rue makes me wanna touch a drugg. But I felt the same way about 13 reasons. Where it did affect me POSITIVELY. But it could also be twisted to show "look at how much attention you can/ may get if you kill yourself" And people that aren't well can respond to that negatively instead of seeing the real message. So...idk. I'm sure there may be a message like that in euphoria that I'm not seeing bc I'm not in that place to receive it negatively. Edit. Didn't realize how old your post was. I only just got this video recommended to me lol.

Doesn't exactly sound like a safe set where the women feel empowered to say no. When you add in the fact they're supposed to be portraying 16/17 year olds and how much he enjoys mixing violence into the mix, the writer/director is REALLY starting to come across like a creep more than anything. Which is a shame because the show has SO much potential, if he could just appreciate them for their talents instead of their bodies like he manages to do with Zendaya (who just so happens to be the only one there famous enough to not have to worry about retribution like the others would)

    2 жыл бұрын

@@Lea-zx9qn yup, it acts if there's a Binary between addicts and regular folk, and that only the ones ACTIVELY in throws of addiction need to be worried. Give me some scenes where Nate has to get his stomach pumped or Cassie does too much Molly and has a mild seizure or SOMETHING to show that drugs can hurt you even when don't view yourself as an addict. The scenes with Cassie & Maddy on the merry go round and Jules at the party mistaking a random girl for Rue both made me crave MDMA SOOOO bad. Like I literally had to remind myself it's dangerous to mix SSRIs and molly, otherwise I honestly might have reached out to my old dealer and seen if he had any. To act like this content can't be triggering to at risk kids just because it features a single addict plotline feels disingenuous or maybe out of touch to how those of us who actually *were* drawn to drugs process this media. Scenes of Rue having a bad time don't counteract how triggering I find the highly aesthetic scenes of super fun drug time. People at risk of addiction don't have healthy coping mechanisms. So putting triggering drug content in front of them *can* have a harmful impact, no matter how well intentioned and "anti-drug" the message was INTENDED to be (ironically you need to look no further than DARE to see this. They were constantly talking about how much drugs would ruin your life, and all it actually did was incite MORE drug use. Kids often don't respond to content in the way adults assume they would).

  • @tecmacamoyolo

I have a lot of beef with DARE. They used to trick children into snitching on their own parents who used medicinal marijuana for various illnesses. Idk, I'm a full grown adult, and the merry go round ecstasy scene made me crave molly, so I cant imagine how it came across to an audience even MORE susceptible to that than I am. I think the show is a mixed bag, but I don't think you get to film half your scenes as super cool and aesthetic and then claim it's not glamorizing it just because ONE character is consistently depicted as having a bad time. every kid is just gonna tell themselves it's going to be like the aesthetic times and they just need to pace themselves so they don't end up like Rue. It's always easy to convince yourself you won't be the girl who ends up addicted BEFORE you start doing them. I loved season 1, didn't really have a strong opinion on it's drug content as I feel like kids have both way worse and way better media (I don't think it's going to influence kids in either direction as much as most people seem to), but like...you cant tell me the scenes on the merry go round or Jules kissing that girl at that one party don't make you want to get high (assuming you have experience with drug use like I do).

Eh people actually are glamorizing it, just like they glamorized Skins back in the day. They’re hot, cool, have sex, do whatever they want. The struggles are there but so is the appeal. Their fashion is cool, sexy, party girl-chic. They go to school in outfits most people club in. They have lots of friends and an active social life. Let’s not pretend there aren’t impressionable teens out there that do think what they’re seeing is cool and glamorous. I’ve seen people talk about how they emulated Effy and Cassie from Skins back in the day (even though they had prominent struggles as well) and it basically gave them trauma. I think Shameless for example did a better job (at least in the early seasons) of depicting struggles without glamorizing them.

You guys say “impressionable teens” but nobody above the age of 12 would even think to want go through what any of the characters go through just because the characters are “hot, cool, and have sex.” Teens probably think that the fashion and style is cool, yes, but they don’t associate that with the clear, detrimental traumas the characters go through and think to want to be exactly like those characters. The drug addict, Rue, is depicted as probably one of the most uncool and messed up characters of the entire show. Drugs are literally the downfall of Rue and that’s clearly evident in the entire show as seen in major scenes and plot-points with her character (like her fights with her family and girlfriend, social and mental detachment, and general sense of miserableness.) Plus these shows literally have an age limit, warning signs. ETC. If you decide to dodge it thats on you. If your child decided to commit something bad that’s on YOU. Ask yourself what led to that, not blame a show. And 13 reasons why was literally a girl who committed suicide and put the reasons why she did it in those tapes. It glamorized suicide, and she also blamed' others, and tried to make them feel guilty, for something she did, as some 'revenge'. -among so many others things.. There's multiple videos on KZread even that explain why it's such a horrible show. But basis is- You can't blame someone else/others for ur choices or what you decided to make.' As someone who was a teen addict and got clean at 22 ,I have almost 10 years clean now. I couldn’t get past the second episode. For me at least I think it’s glamorizing for a different reason, they were trying to relate so hard that it missed important things that would keep it grounded but to went so hard it turned into glamorization. This is why I just stopped watching, I felt grossed out Bc it was almost a parody of addiction that was trying to act serious. Like aww, see even good looking, rich people that do their makeup fancy and have sex all time can still be addicts. And now in real life we idolize their makeup looks from the show. I think most people in have gotten confused with idolizing and glamorizing. No one wants to be like the people in the show. It’s how they’re depicting them in the show that were idolizing and glamorizing the worst parts of being addict and putting it on a pretty person Bc if wasn’t we wouldnt feel as bad for them or try to relate Like we do in real life. that’s glamorizing the addiction part. Most people likely wouldn’t give two fucks if they were homeless and unattractive or just normal people, living normal lives but are also addicted. From what I know of the new season I know an important scene Zendaya is in seems to have been inspired by “The Basketball Diaries” just from watching a clip. That I can say is a teen addict story done well at least from my knowledge before I got clean.

(no, start of ep 4 doesn’t count) they don’t need to be naked in the first place, if they desperately need to show some scenes like nate and cassie having sex for the story, they don’t need to make it THAT GRAPHIC. why is sydney sweeney naked in almost every scene she gets? it seems like dan cares more about his weird fascination with her and the rest of the girls than writing an actually good show.

So far 3 of the main cast are speaking out against the show (as much as you can reasonably expect them to speak out when they're still actively working on the project) Kats actress was basically written out after the director started screaming at her cause she didn't like the way her character was being written, Cassie's actress has admitted she filmed way more nude scenes than she was comfortable with and after filming wrapped requested they please cut some of them because they were gratuitous, and the actor who plays McKay says it's not a remotely collaborative process with the writer/director and that he feels totally out of the loop with his character It's extremely rare for actors to speak out negatively against directors/producers on projects they're still working on, so for these stories to ALREADY be coming out about dissatisfaction with the process is a BIG deal.

I LOVE euphoria as an adult. I won't lie though, if I was a parent with a teenager I wouldn't let them watch it. I don't think any media inherently glorifies anything. I think a teenage brain can't help but glorify things that make them feel. I remember watching the UK skins in my teens and (I would never admit it or even recognized it then) but did glorify unstable mental health and drug use. Teens don't have enough life experience to know who they are yet and that's okay. Their lives are tough enough without needing to experience the emotional rollercoaster of this show. As an adult I like the show cause it's a more intense reflection of teenage-hood- I can emotionally connect with that past part of myself with the wisdom of time on my side.

Intercutting scenes of ONE character who actually suffers the repercussions of drug use doesn't offset the cool aesthetic ones. I wouldnt have a single issue if they'd set it in college and hadn't heavily targeted teenagers in their advertising campaigns. It's a good show and I enjoy it. But so was 13 reasons why, and that also had a catastrophic effect on at-risk teenagers. Making content you KNOW is triggering and then targeting an audience who largely don't yet have the mental capacity to deal with triggering content in healthy ways is dangerous. Full stop.

Even though they're adults, I'd still say forcing really new actresses on their first big project to do more nude scenes than they're comfortable with is exploitative. The director basically cut Barbie Ferraira's role as much as he could at the very least minute cause the actress voiced dissatisfaction with some of the scenes with her character. Aka, retribution for speaking out. Not exactly a safe set that empowers women to feel like they can enforce their boundaries without being punished in their careers. Now the actress who plays Cassie has admitted she filmed way more nude scenes than she wanted to and actually asked for some to be cut was it was just super excessive, and the actor who plays McKayhad come out and said it's not remotely a collaborative process and director doesn't really take notes from the actors, that he has no idea what's going on with his character and he's nervous about even saying that cause he's still just got to HOPE he gets more scenes in season 3. Being writer/director carries a TON of power. The man is not wielding is remotely responsibly, and young people (prrimarily women's) careers are being harmed in the process. Im over the show until they clean up production and take the pervert in charge to task for how he's treating his crew.

I think the main discussion people SHOULD be having would be about the amount of extremely young teens and tweens watching this show Imo any fictional media is fine for adults to watch, but I have actually seen young people wanting to be like these characters or at least romanticize them. This exact things happened with a older show called Skins.

Young kids can't be trusted to be able to handle watching triggering content and then utilize healthy coping mechanisms. Even a lot of adult addicts have to avoid content they find triggering. I'm not gonna applaud HBO for targeting kids with their tv show about teenagers that's filmed in just about the most triggering way humanely imaginable, even though I do think it absolutely has artistic merit for an adult audience. Maybe they should stop heavily targeting kids with their PR Campaigns and or setting their sex-dramas in high school if they don't want to have to deal with being held accountable for how their messaging could have untintentiinal effects (just like 13 reasons why triggered a huge wave of self harm and sucidie attempts despite technically being anti-suicide, or how the D.A.R.E. program caused increased drug use despite constantly fear mongering about how drugs will ruin your life) Kids don't respond to content in the way adults think they will. There's numerous studies into it, and I full anticipate to see this show studied a decade from now. And I'm not anticipating it's effects will be good. I'm a dang adult, and it makes me miss doing MDMA so bad, and I'm super high risk for having seizures now so I CANT be messing with it, but some of the scenes of this show make me crave is so badly. Add in the fact it presents it as a binary where Rue is the addict and everyone else largely engaged in drug use without repercussions, and I can't even imagine how triggering it is for with teenagers just starting to party. Literally all they had to do is set is in a college and not advertise to teenagers. But nah, they need to maximize the controversy to generate headlines, potential harm to a young audience be damned.

It’s funny how people talk about kids getting a hold of these types of shows when meanwhile I was physically and sexually assaulted then verbally abused when I was 5-10… as a kid I didn’t know what to do because no one ever exposed me or told me about these type of situation and what to do what I’m in them and how to get out of them worst of all no one around me was going through what I was experiencing so I couldn’t ask them and I was scared to tell my parents because I thought I was the one that was going to get in trouble for going through these thing I now have 3+ failed suicide attempts and constant violent impulses from neglect of my mental health throughout my childhood

It depends on the child. Genuinely. Those young people clearly don't understand the media then. I watched shit like this when I was younger. I was suicidal, I hated myself, my mom was suicidal, my dad was abusing my mom. I was also 11. I'm a teenager and this show makes me never want to touch drugs. Rue's struggle is terrifying. Terrifying. Young people will always watch shows other media made for adults. It'll always happen. Some people won't understand it but you act like none of them will. Those people are romanticizing. Not the show. I've personally never seen an example of this but I am sure it happens. I am also sure those people are probably going through a lot mentally or at least have some sort of trauma. Romanticizing trauma and abuse typically comes from people who have gone through it themselves

My aunt is a past drug addict and she absolutely loves this show. Sometimes it’s good to show these things on tv shows because it’s shows how hard it can be to be a drug addict and struggling with lots of shit, especially a teenager on top of that. I watched my aunt go through it, it’s not easy at all and we tried supporting her in every way and YES she had multiple relapses but she’s a good person and she’s trying. That’s what I think Euphoria is trying to do, they are showing you how it really is being one. They aren’t glorifying it at all. They are showing you what it’s like.

It's just gratuitous for the sake of gratuitousness, and considering he's mostly obsessed with naked/half naked female bodies or women crying in pain, ....it comes across poorly, to say the least. I wanted to see stories that felt like girls Ive known IRL, instead it feels more and more like a peek into the mind of some of the predatory perverts I've been unfortunate enough to cross paths with.

I feel like they opened the eyes of many adults and how different our adolescence was from the one teens nowadays who have a lot more pressure and society is still struggling to give everyone the space they deserve. As a non-addict, it only made me feel more empathetic toward addicts and abuse victims. The way many people use social media just fucked everything up, especially for teenagers...

In my opinion they are not glamorizing any of it because they show the consequences of all their actions. Such as how Cassie got pregnant, how rue overdosed, what drugs can do to a person in general, stealing alcohol / stealing, lying, ect.
