Zemax Tutorial - 1 - Lens Data Editor Interface
Ғылым және технология
Introduction to Zemax entry with the Lens Data Editor.
Proficiency with Zemax does not guarantee success with modeling your optical system. Basic optics knowledge is required as well. For more optics information see:

@crazyLocko Use your keyboards "insert" key to add extra surfaces above the row you have highlighted. If you want to insert a row below, use CTRL-Insert. These shortcuts can be found in the Lens Data Editor Pull "Edit" pull down (not Zemax pull downs)
Hey Scott Sparrold, thanks a lot for helping, your a great guy!!
thank you for such a quick reply. I have another question: what the difference to set an aperture stop at surface1 (dummy) or at surface2(STO)? because I see the color of the thin lens changes from red (when I try to set aperture at surface1) to black (when I try to set aperture at surface2).
Interesting. I'm not sure how to resolve your problem, since I have not used the trial version. Did you try calling your local Zemax customer support?
@ddip214 both Zemax and Code V require a USB hardkey plugged into your computer
Thanks for reply i downloaded the trial version , but in the installation guide it says that we need a hardware key to use the software and is there any tutorial available for Fresnel lens ???? sorry for the question i am a mechatronics student i have not used this kind of software before . thanks for reply again
hi i am doing a university masters project using fresnel lens as solar concentrators ,can i use zemax for designing and simulating the model ???? , if so can i use the trial version of the zemax , since it is expensive to buy the original version thanks
Hello Sir! I had the training last year but my zemax has been stuck and doesnt respond. Where can I get the student version of this programme? Thank you.
The color of the optical surfaces denotes which row you have highlighted in the Lens Data Editor. By choosing which surface is the aperture stop you are doing two things: 1) Specifying which surface is the limiting aperture and therefore 2) telling Zemax how to specify / launch the chief and marginal rays.
Thanks a lot for this tutorial!!
When I hit the new button I didnt have a 1 surface as you had.. how can I add this dummy surface?
I assume you are referencing the thickness at 20 on the "paraxial" line at time stamp 5:18? If so, then yes that 20 mm is the distance from the paraxial lens to the focus!
Hello, i have watched many of your videos Can you make a video tutorial for designing Ftheta lens lenses? Thank you very much !!
Hello, how to model a fresnel lens with zemax ?
Since the lens is paraxial and the thickness is 20, does that mean that the image itself is just 20mm from the lens (i.e., zero of that thickness is taken up by the "thin" lens)? There is 20mm of free space.
hey Scott. one more question. do you have answers for your homework?
Thank you sooooo much! It helps me a lot!
Another option is to use Oslo-EDU from Lambda research. It's free version has no time limit but is limited to 10 surfaces - perfect for your app. It also supports Fresnel surfaces. To find this do a search on "oslo edu download"
@ddip214 another great software near to my heart is Code V, but it has to be leased. Found at opticalres
Thanks for the videos. Wondering if this stuff still relevant or is there some new videos anyone could suggest.
Zemax has a Fresnel surface for simulating your solar lens. It also has an optimizer for imaging and non-imaging applications. I think the trial version is only for a month, so you need to learn the software and do your design / analysis and hope nothing changes after a month.
@ddip214 The only free optics software I am aware of is KDP2 found at ecalculations dott com. Also Oslo has a version that gives you like 4 or 6 surfaces for free sinopt dott com
@ddip214 @ddip214 Zemax is not a free software, but considering the capabilities, GUI, ease of use it is relatively cheap to purchase
Can u make Video explains the steps to download ZEMAX, I could not download the software or can u teach in my gmail i need this program to my graduation project

+Dhuha Algbury u cant download the full zemax version for free. There is an demoversion which is for free, but in there one cant save files. the download link:www.zemax.com/support/resource-center/downloads/demo U have to type in ure ID. and then the company will send to u the download link. Maybe ure university has got the license for the zemax software. then u can get the full version for free.

+Dhuha Algbury well i would propose u work with zemax demoversion, u could make screenshots of the simulation, instead of saving files. in the user interface there is a user interface document in pdf version, which could help u. Im not that professional, i also work with zemax for my first time. Another opportunity is asking the company for advices. maybe they could help u.

Your video series is still extremely relevant. Are the homework solutions available anywhere 11 years later? Thank you.
Is this free?
Your homework website no longer exists.
Your advice is to take the classes provided by Zemax. You do realize these classes are ludicrously expensive and out of reach for most people unless they happen to have an employer willing to pay for these classes.
