He is in fact one of the greatest composers of all time! I've yet to see anyone compare to him regarding counterpoint. His harmonic inventiveness, rhythmic finesse, chromaticism, and daring experimentalism (all while crafting some of the most beautiful music in existence during the process) confirm that his music is truly something to behold.

I like to know that Zelenka is spread to the world of classical music because this composer deserves to be known for its quality, allegory and baroque style that competes with the most famous greats such as Haendel or Bach for his particular style that catches the most clueless, never It's late to honor the legacy of this extraordinary musician, my greetings from Mexico

It is so pleasing to see the growing numbers of listenings here. There is a frenetically wonderful MASTERPIECE here that is getting more and more known for God's sake. But Ladies and Gents let's confess it is very high time to discover and learn this fantastic music. Compare the numbers of listenings on Zelenka's brilliant sonatas with Telemann's sonatas, and then compare the sonatas themselves. We have an outstanding musical genius here and so few of us know about him.

Merci pour cette découverte passionante !

There is something unbearably beautiful in this mass. You suffer from the joy and enjoy the pain this music transmits into your soul. Absolutely chatartic experience. Unbelievably strong and true emotions. You often feel you have transcended into heaven while listening. A very rare diamond in the the musical world. A very rare one. And, sorry, we mustn't forget to say that Maestro Luks is a genius. He knows and understands everything in Zelenka who, by the way, is - very few of us know yet - not only a contemporary of Johann Sebastian but his greatest rival.

"Unbearably beautiful" somehow just does not seem appropriate for this work or Zelenka's music in general. I agree this is excellent music from the Baroque period and Zelenka deserves praise, yet your word choice is, to me, like a major key Gigue during a Requiem.

  • @roberthoffmann3551

@@Renee2004lr Dear Lisa, When I am saying 'unbearably beautiful' I mean it is more beautiful than simply beautiful. 'Unbearably' functions here as a modifier. If we can say that someone is awfully pretty, I am afraid, we can also say that something is 'unbearably beautiful'. When I am saying this, I mean the beauty you can experience in this piece of music is so beautiful that you can hardly bear it. Overwhelmingly beautiful. Does it sound better to your ears?

This celestial music is the same high quality as that of J.S. Bach's. Unfortunately Zelenka's acknowledgement is far behind its true value. Now after so many years of his discovery it is high time to make sure that his music is as great as his contemporary giants' . I know it is very challenging to admit but dear friends, please, do admit it.

The Dresden Sound, with its best exponent and performers. Zelenka's music was "buried" by the Court. A pity, he would have prolonged the Baroque era with his anti mechanistic composing. Many baroque composers wrote what sounded like machines talking. Zelenka captured the dialogue of the Heavenly Host. I really liked the Soprano.... she has soul. Mr. Luks? Amazing guy, he lives, breathes and eats Zelenka compositions.

In real time (second row!) it made an impact for life. Especially the first part of the Miserere as an encore. This great recording is just the evidence that I have not dreamed it. Next year August 2014 Collegium 1704 with Václav Luks will return at the FOM in Utrecht and hopefully once more in the Dom church as location and not in the new musical hall of Utrecht which is a failure from the planned drawings as any child could have noticed except the board of Utrecht.

Dank u AVRO!

Great! Zelenka & Bach knew each other, btw. Bach would visit him along with Weiss when he was in Dresden and they would visit Bach when they'd come to Leipzig. Unfortunately, they were all sort of "victims" of the new Rococo style which preferred more "pretty tunes" and less contrapuntal harmonies. Zelenka obviously tried to satisfy both without giving up his ability to write fugal movements. The court at Dresden preferred Italian opera with its little tunes as opposed to profound counterpoint

Bravo 1704, in re-spreading the work of Zelenka. Evidence of Bach's counterpoint and harmonics , and presaging Mozart' s delicacy, and Handel's incomparable melodic flair. Pity this friend of Telemann didn't compose opera, especially with his experience in Vienna and Dresden.
