At the same time, the team would have the trouble of remaking a faithful remake OR creating an entirely new remaster. I think this is why they've avoided remaking the first two games, and allowing BoTW be a re-imagining of Zelda 1 in modern day. Perhaps a new Zelda could be that same re-imagining from Zelda II

That way Link could visit shops and buy Life, Magic potions, repel potion to either clear or reduce field enemies, and buy a few other items to assist him. A few of the things you mentioned were addressed in a rom hack (Zelda ll redux). It has longer sword beams, spells cost less MP, exp draining foes are optional, Link dolls are retained in your life count, after game over you can continue from palaces, enemies drop magic jars/exp bags much quicker.... Perhaps, the remake could address combat by giving Link more sword attacks eg. Stun blade attack. Maybe grant Link some items to use on the side scroll screens. Good reference game may be Faxanadu on how to implement some additional items. P.S. definitely another Zelda ll remake is always welcomed.

I think having the hammer within the second palace instead of Death Mountain would have helped a lot to give a better first impression of the game's difficulty. The hammer makes the travel time so much shorter if you're trying to beat Death Mountain. Of course the lives system would be better removed, but it's not *that* bad in many parts of the game when you have shortcuts available.

People don't appreciate Zelda II, which is kinda fair given the difficulty, but there's so much of it in Ocarina of Time. One of Link's pained animations where he clutches his side and bounces back on one foot is straight from Zelda II. Dark Link, Volvagia, and even Phantom Ganon were either in Zelda II straight out or at least directly inspired by a boss in it. The towns bearing the names of various sages. The list goes on!

I wasn't aware of this "controversy". That's just how games were back then. Kids these days. But, especially now that I'm old, I really don't appreciate when a game is disrespectful of my time. I agree in theory that failure should have consequences, but when the consequence is: I have to spend an unreasonable amount of time just to get back to where I was, in way that doesn't make the game more fun or interesting or even challenging, just more time-consuming... At that point I'm like: WTF. Just...come on, man.

An additional statement, i'd LOVE a new zelda rpg. Where you still habe puzzles and dungeons but all enemy encounters are RPG battles. Have it be a sequal or game post zelda 2 where Link has to re-discover allcthe sages and the sages are your party members, and Zelda will be your spirit guide similar to spirit tracks so she can ba a voice and link can have silent dialogue choices. The sages can be findable party members like persona or mass effect or dragon age and they all have a special puzzle function that they offer at any time, in party or not. And the whole game is gathering the sages of each of the races (gerudo, rito, goron, zora, shiekah, korok) but also 3 more (deku, yeti, yiga) which are specifically rival races to the other races but also offer more narrative and type coverage to battles. Each sage can have a base ability but also a new ability once they finish their related dungeon with link. The battles can be like classic final fantasy fights. The dungeons can be classic zelda affairs like alttp, and again, fights can just pop up whenever. There can be town quests that'll require venturing into the world and the sages/companions. Idk just seems like it would be a FANTASTIC shake up and growth to the zelda 2 style and be a great venture for zelda.

It was really good and just improved on the base game and added alot of content and new features while also somewhat improving the graphics. But an official remake by Nintendo would also be nice, I like Zelda 2 so the more the better.

If we're talking improvements there are plenty to make. 1) Removing lives one, there's no point to them except punish the player and is the equivalent of extending playtime. If they wanted to extend playtime then they should've added more things to do, if not leave the game alone to be enjoyed, it's better if it's remembered as a good and fun game than an unforgiving parent. 2) This is exclusive to the NES version: enemies that can only be harmed with the fire spell.. no. Just no. I hated entering combat in the second continent because there were plenty of times where I ran out of magic and was ambushed by tektikes and those annoying flying things. 3) Shield mechanic is wonky. I tried to see if lizards and iron knuckles were keeping track of the down button and mess with them but to no avail. Not to mention they can be overcome by jumping and attacking at the right time, which doesn''t feel intentional. It feels like Nintendo intended for you to strategize the most adequate time to strike or to defend. 4) Vanish Blue Iron Knuckles to the dark world. 5) Have enemies drop health ailing ítems. They already drop potions so I don't see why they can't drop hearts. This is also a problem as I will state next. 6) It is incredibly irritating to be farming experience points only to have the enemy which is, a) harder to kill, b) rewards the most exp, c) is an overall annoyance or d) all of the above, only to drop a blue potion an no exp points with the magic meter full. I see no reason why both exp and recovering ítems shouldn't be rewarded simultaneously. There's more that could be done with this game to make it better, but these 6 things are the minimum to make it fun imho. Still I recognize I may not be giving this game enough credit. While it does have bullshit design choices I still feel great whenever I conquer a palace, level up, or get a new spell. It gives me more to experiment and makes me feel like I'm growing stronger. It's just that the feeling isn't as potent as with Zelda 1, which is a shame because I think this playstyle had the most potential out of both of the two.

Honestly, dying in Zelda 1 in the later parts is almost just as punishing. Starting with a mere 3 hearts, having to backtrack to a fairy fountain, AND shoving out another 68 rupees for a new potion, not to mention 100-160 rupees down the drain for lightly tapping a Like Like, which are almost always in rooks filled with Bubbles that will keep you from being abke to defend yourself. Plus, the game can be really unfair in getting you hit with things that aren't really your fault to begin with. When you have 8 darknuts and several cannons in one room, the frame rate tweaks around like crazy and it's hard to respond to anything with correct timing. I think people just didn't notice these other ways Zelda 1 is punishing because they aren't as conventional as Zelda 2's.

I would love to play your proposed version of zelda 2. This game gets undeserved hate anymore. As guy who got zelda 2 when it was new back in the day, all this hate came way later. To paraphrase you, after decades of improvements in technology its not fair to judge zelda 2 by those standards. At the time, this was literally the only other zelda game, there were no precedence in the series and everybody liked this game just fine. Even my mother played the fuck out of this game back then (in her 20s at the time, but most adults didnt play video games). The first time i heard of this being judged so harshly and a "blacksheep" of the series was about 20 years after its release with everybody then unconsciously piggybacking on the idea simply because its popular to not like this game. Ultimately i conclude that any person should play a game for themselves and not rely on "popular opinions" that aren't their own.

First, I have to say that the edition of this video is excellent and immersive! I don't consider myself a Zelda hardcore fan, but *Zelda 2 - The Adventure of Link* is one of my favorite games of all times. I got to say that it doesn't feel "incomplete", it's just the way it was meant to be, but for many, we want more! It not only deserves a Remake preserving the WorldView / SideView interaction, but as you stated, many more features and make it, practically, in an Open World game like Skyrim for example. I also don't think it needs to lower the difficulty. I've enjoyed hardtype hacks like The Nightmare of Ganon, but we need more features. That would make it perfect, the dream game! Once I even planned to make a game heavily inspired in Z2tAoL using Unity, but the copyright infringement would suck.

BTW as a kid, Zelda II was one of my favorite NES games. I used to rent it a lot at Blockbuster. I eventually owned the game. I could always get to the final boss but could never beat it until I found out you could duck in a corner and stab. (The issue to me lot of times was the boss before Shadow Link which ate up your magic and health and the endurance of just getting to the boss).

Just a gentle critique - I was really interested in watching this video but I am very photosensitive. In the future, would you please consider censoring the flashing effects that originate from the Zelda 2 death screen? Or at the very least, give a flash warning at the beginning of the video, and time stamps for when they will be. Unfortunately I can't finish the video because of the flashing effects showing up multiple times without warning. Otherwise, I'm interested to see your future videos!

If you know any good resources throw it in the comments! I'll go ahead and put a pinned comment with timestamps. Thanks for the comment!

i think most people don't have a problem with games being "hard", but rather having to redo 1h of boring backtrack to reach the point they died. That's mostly why games like Souls and NES games remain niche. Playing Adventure of Link with save states is way more fun and manageable for today's standard even though the "physical difficulty" remains the same. I think the "difficulty problem" is not a skill problem, but rather a patience problem. When i was a kid i didn't mind replaying the same 2 levels of a game over and over again, because, i had only one unfinished game at a time. Now though, i have hundreds of unfinished games backlogging around and dozens i still haven't even tried out, which remains sealed, collecting dust.

As a thought experiment, I've imagined it not as Zelda II, but as Kid Icarus II, and all of a sudden the mechanics just seem to fit. It was a good game, it just wasn't a good ZELDA game. That being said, your recommendations for fixing it are interesting.

AWESOME video! I've always, always felt like this game was incomplete in some capacity, and I think you truly nailed it regarding "player agency" on the field/world map. I never, ever thought about the possibility of having more agency on the world map regarding enemies; imagine if you COULD attack them from behind or with a weapon on the field! What a difference that would make. The short sword attack damage box (only one block) and the weak laser distance (only four blocks) really hold the combat back from being superb. It's definitely good, but it could have been SO much better! I also did my own analysis of Zelda II for our series The Good, The Bad & The Buggy: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qaiM28tumpeXcZM.html

Zelda 2 is the first (or one of the first) Souls-like games. Changing it into an Actraiser clone misses the point. The overworld is fine. It does its job and a long walk back is the price you pay for failure. Long walks back are a staple of the souls-like genre. What it really needs (if anything) are more tools to vary the gameplay and allow experimentation in your play style.

Hey, I know this is a year old and your content has probably improved since this video, but the inclusion of the flashing deaths makes this video unwatchable for me. I don't have a serious condition but it just hurts to look at, and the solution in the pinned comment is honestly kind of a copout. It's a real shame because I can tell you put a lot of effort into many assets in the video, for example the intro. Some gaps between speaking was a bit too long and I felt you overexplained why zelda 2 is more punishing than zelda 1, but that would be fine for me. I hope you improve and/or have improved since this video because it's clear that you put in a lot of effort into this video!

Because the flashes are part if the original game it was easy to overlook, sorry about that. I don't rewatch old videos much, too cringe for me, but for the explaining part, I do like to create a foundation of ideas for folks who maybe never even touched an NES before, which might be too much for folks who kinda already get it, in a similar manner to making all parts of the video watchable for all people. But rest assured that all the videos go through at least 6 rewrites, and I hope the channel is gets more informative and funnier to provide value for everyone who took the time. So, thank YOU very much, for taking the time!
