The ZX1 is a unique, high concept, lovely-in-hand camera capable of gorgeous imagery. Every time I look at the output, I'm impressed all over again. But the lens isn't flawless, and it has taken Zeiss so long to bring it to market that the camera's future is uncertain. What can Zeiss do to change this? I have some ideas.

I'd love to see Zeiss revive the Contax brand & develop a line of FF, interchangeable lens mirrorless cameras. Go retro & style it like a G1 or 2, or an RTS. Use a wide mount a la Nikon Z, but add a couple of mm to the diameter so another body could take a larger sensor (think Hasselblad X system/Fujifilm GFX etc.) and still use the same lenses.

Completely agree. Why don’t they sell the camera at 5k without the lens, and bring back 45mm f2, 28mm, f2.8, and some of their zm lenses onto it. They will have a huge edge over leica since they simply don’t have the economy of scale to compete with Sony, Fuji, canon, and Nikon anyway

Wow, and double wow ! I just found this camera on a sale, and was really curious about it. But, when you mention the way you work, that was the moment I wanted to say just DITTO! I work just the same as you do. My fun is with the camera, with my soul and may be later, sharing some of those photos with groups of interest or insta. Ipad-&13 " macbook pro, and 27 inch Imac as well hehehe, And I don't edit all , I love editing in detail slowly choosing what I really loved. Thank you from Uruguay for a wonderful vlog! Best wishes!!!

The outstanding industrial design is what creates the joy of taking it in the hands. If somebody created such a beautiful camera with the lovely Zeiss image qualitiy at a reasonable price and strips off the rest I as a enthusiast would buy it. Instead they target the iphone users who will stick to their smart phones which are more than sufficient for quick online content. What a waste.

ZEISSSAURUS REX (ZX1): 37MP-sensor (not 61 MP from 2019) from early 2012 (Nikon D800); back screen resolution (HD, not FHD) from 2011 (when the Samsung Galaxy SII HD, announced in Q3/2011, got the first HD-resolution smartphone screen); Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 Processor (announced Dec. 2015, first phones Q1/2016 - almost pre-historic in silicon tech terms...).

An M10-D competitor with no screen that could utilize the innards of the ZX1 and their existing ZM line of lenses would be very nice indeed. It would have that nostalgic, tactility that people seem to be attracted too while not having to add extensive R&D to a new camera. Zeiss has always been premium but not Leica premium so whatever they do it has to come in half way between the mass market price points and Leica. Once they go higher they'll loose people. I was really looking forward to the ZX1 but I had to pass on it once released.

I much prefer to edit on my workstation pc rather then on a camera except when when working with the fun fuji instant cameras. I don't care about having millions of function buttons, I hope they make new iterations of this camera and think more sensibly about the price. Great review again :-)

Zeiss is not Sony. Zeiss has been connected to photography and should have the potential to attract more customers if they play they cards right. Unfortunately, photography is not very interesting for Zeiss anymore since they don't produce new ZM lenses or come up with lenses for the Z or RF mount. I love the Zeiss (classic and Milvus) lenses. They work for me. This camera however should have come with interchangeable lenses. Also this camera should not have been made in China. This leaves a bad taste in my mouth because people associate ZEISS with premium and artistic locations - at least I do. Zeiss has sold their soul.

@@oliverlison - Strong points well made, I did not know that the new 'German' Zeiss camera is made in China - home of many excellent products but also of low cost manufacturing - at least Leica can badge their mainly Japanese products 'made in German' by completing the final build at 'home base'. Leica must be laughing so hard at Zeiss......

When I see the negative commentary about Sony’s A1 price, I think about cameras such as the ZX1 and the Q2. They are cameras that seem to exist in an alternative universe. Having said that, I had a Q2 and sold it to get an A1. I get the physical beauty and feeling of handling the Q2, and probably the ZX1, but the real story is about what these cameras can’t do at these price points. With that in mind, I’ll stick with the the more conservative Sony line for now.

@@Jez2008UKThat’s not my point. That is, at the price point of these cameras, they should be more capable. Arguably, if you only shoot street photography an X100 will do the job. I shoot street photography, basketball and landscapes. Why not have a camera that does it all?

I shoot with an X100V and for the price it outpaces the Z1. I can do the same said process shoot edit and share using the Fuji app directly to my Note 9 and edit and share from there. It's a real shame and I worry about its future.

I love the concept, rather the CONCEPT !! Shouted big and loud !! And is, or perhaps was, Brilliant. But in its (belated) rush to the future they neglected the basics of the present; an instant start-up, excellent and fast autofocus, stabilisation, (either in-cam or in-lens), and … the price. I fear it may quickly become a curio. Or at very least, as this video suggests, it’s a ‘Not yet’ purchase, which somehow seems a great shame and poor reward for innovation. But during its (too) long gestation period every other image taking devices, ie phone cameras & camera cameras, evolved as such a pace as to make this camera almost redundant… A pity though. // Thanks for an very excellent, informed, intelligent and erudite review.

The story of such cameras is really a sad story… in terms of all in one solution are nice but, as you said, for the target group of this cameras the ability to shoot, edit and share in one device doesn’t make so much sense. Personally, I am usually shooting without even chimp on my photos except of critical situations and used to edit afterwards for many days. As for the camera itself, my main complaint from what I have seen is the lack of the classic Zeiss character… (my Planar 1.4/50 is almost permanently mounted on my Canon for that reason). It hasn’t to do with editing. You can tell a Zeiss lens even from camera JPEGs. Here the most photos look like they have shot from a Nikon with a Sigma Art.

I am a Zeiss fan and I love their Milvus, Classic and Otus line up. With the ZX1 Zeiss is selling their soul since the camera is made in China. I was hoping Zeiss would show sentiment to their rich history and the camera would be made in an 'artist's loft' instead of a Chinese sweatshop. Everyone is comparing this camera with a Leica. It should be a similar approach but it is not. Paying $6000 for something like this is not worth it when it is made in China.
