    Thanks for the lesson! Just picked a Zebco Rod & Reel combo from the flea market for $8 bucks! It’s a Zebco 366-6 rod with a brass geared Zebco 33. After watching your videos, I was able to bring my reel back to life! The nice thing about casting these old ones, is that I feel like I have something solid and dependable in my hand that deserves respect, as opposed to a piece throw-away junk made in China! No more disposable reels for me!

    Excellent - saved another one!!! Good for you - these reels feel special because they are special - someone made it, checked it, and was very proud of their work and 60 years later it still shows. Good on you for saving that reel - it will likely last far past you as well as the first owner(s). BTW, my saltwater reel is 80 . . . kzread.info/dash/bejne/X6SmuJqOob2-ebg.html

    I would have picked that as well - but this one is special, it belonged to my great-uncle: Roy Baker. He was a silent film actor (extra) - down on his luck he walked into a hotel in Miami and the manager said: "Where have you been?" Turns out their recent mail order hired hotel manager had failed to show - after hearing this Uncle Roy looked at him and said: "You're in luck - I just happen to be a hotel manager." He went on to become hotelier to the stars of that age and had hotels in Kennebunkport, Lake Placid NY, Lake Placid Fl, Sebring, Fl, Miami and who knows where else. Each had rides and amusements like Disney. He's listed in the who's who of hoteliers and part of his story is here on KZread in "An Immigrant's Tale" about the early Mattson Family. I hope you have a fine time in your travels!

  • @mattmattsongold

    @mattmattsongold

    4 жыл бұрын

    No - if you have a clicker on the left and engage it, it should do the click thing - if you don't have a clicker and the reel is all black (metal), you have an much earlier model and it is normal. If you have a truly old one - I might consider retiring it, as they're getting scarce.

    Thanks - I don't, and since the front (and back) covers are interchangeable (readily) for all years, it makes it hard to figure out for sure what you've got unless looking at the body itself. Markers are brass gears - steel gears - feather touch - no anti reverse - things like that.

    I have a Zebco 89 with a whitish coating. It is very difficult to remove this coating. It seems to be a soft material. A finger nail will scrape through it easily but sanding seems to help. Plastic body - pretty much get out the old JB Weld . . . You can of course try a soldering iron and melt the plastic back together. If it's a non-critical (flexing is the problem) area, you can get away with that. Good luck!

  • @mattmattsongold

    @mattmattsongold

    3 жыл бұрын

    Juan: these reels are very similar in operation - between this and the 'Zebco 33 gear removal" video I did you should be able to get yours apart. If it doesn't move at all, there's a chance someone cinched the drag (if it has one) down all the way. You could have some line stuck or wrapped in the faceplate or in the gears. In any event, taking it apart will tell the tale. Hopefully it's not stripped gears and you can get it working quickly with lube. Best of luck with it!

    The old reels were lasting so long they tried to design obsolescent parts into it so they'd have repeat sales. In the end - abandoned the whole thing and sent it to China to cheapen. Perhaps there is a standard 0 ring that could be found and glued into position on those reels with rubber cement? I know that ring on those is flattened - but seems a smaller thickness 0 might do the trick. You've probably tried all the combinations by now though.
