Young Martin’s Reels was created to honor my dad Martin B. Stivers of Louisville KY. He was an avid fisherman and repaired thousands of fishing reels in his lifetime. I spent numerous hours watching him do so, but I have forgotten most of what he taught me. Now that he is gone, and I find myself in need of reel repair, so I am learning how it is done and trying my best to pass it on.

If I can be of assistance, feel free to contact me Rick48cj2a@yahoo.com
I would also like to thank Dennis Kuntz of 2nd Chance Tackle. His videos have helped to fill in the gaps in my “reel” knowledge. Without his KZread videos I’m afraid Young Martin’s Reels would not exist.

Mario, I actually apologized to a viewer last week for claiming that there was a star drag 202. I decided that I must have mistaken it for a Johnson Century star drag reel I had done, then today, this one came across my work bench. It isn’t the reel I was planning to video but I decided to bump it into the mix.

I enjoy repairing things, and I always have. Even as a kid I would try to repair things. Let’s keep those old reels working.

That's the first 202SE I hav ever seen. Seems likd a much more refined version over the original 202.

It is more refined but I don’t necessarily thing it’s better. I’d take an original version over this any day. Of course the older style drag was a point of failure. I’ve found several of the earlier reel with the adjustment knobs binding or the spring post broken off. Given those failures maybe this is the better design. I’m just not a fan of the crankshaft drag systems on any reels.

Rick, it could be worse for your eyesight you know. LOL I really don’t like it if I have to get a spring off an axle shaft like this. You did a great job on this 202SE! - Chris

On this particular reel, I could have taken the axle shaft out without removing the spring. Better eyesight would have shown me the gear was hitting on the crankshaft. I really don’t know how you do the work you do. I’m pretty sure that couldn’t do this work if my eyes were as bad as yours.

Rick, I wish you could have heard some of the organ concerts and dedications, etc. I used to do. I guess you can say I’ve always been good with my hands. I honestly do a lot simply by feeling and touching. It’s when I drop stuff that I get in trouble. - Chris
