Zbrush Timelapse: Creating Professor X's Cerebro Helmet

Фильм және анимация

In this video I wanted to share a timelapse of how I created the primary pieces for the Cerebro helmet. First and foremost, I'm by no means saying or claiming my method of creating hard surface assets is the end all be all way of sculpting hard surface in ‪@MaxonZBrush‬ In Fact, the beauty of 3d and art creation, in general, is the fact that there are so many methods and ways to achieve the same results. This is just my method.
1. Reference. You need it. It's an absolute must. This project was challenging that regard, considering there is an absolute lack of reference for the back and everyone draws this thing differently, lol.
2. Block Out. I made a blockout sculpt using dynamesh to give me a general shape and silhouette of what I was aiming for.
3. Extract. Then I extract the pieces in the largest shapes and forms I knew would need to be contiguous. Example, the big x, the visor behind it, the square vents coming off the sides. All these pieces have prominent shapes and benefit from being stand alone pieces.
4. Polygroup/Remesh. I typically mask off areas and polygroup them for the best results when I Remesh the pieces I extracted to give myself good topology and edge flow. When I polygroup the pieces in the shapes most conducive for me, I smooth the edges of the polygroups using the "Smooth Groups" brush. This will give you very clean geometry when you remesh. I can't stress how helpful it when working on hard surface assets. It helps to crease the polygrouped areas when you subdivide. The results will yield a nice hard surface edge.
5. Define and Refine your shapes. Challenge and push yourself to create dynamic pieces that add interesting shape language and further your concept. Have Fun.
I'd like to give a massive shoutout to marco plouffe and ‪@KeosMasons‬. During the duration of this model I kept asking, what would Marco do? LOL. I've been watching his live streams quite a bit over the last year and it's helped my pipeline for sculpting hard surface models. I also used the Mecha Alpha Library from Keos Masons for details. Highly recommend it. Below is a link to that set on ArtStation:
