His family is from Kızılcabölük neighborhood of Tavas district of Denizli. At Denizli Men's Art Institute, where he started in 1953, he became popular at school with his different personality and musical aptitude. Meeting Muzaffer Sarısözen, the most famous compiler of Turkish folk songs, at the age of 16 was decisive in his career. He stepped into the art world with Ankara Radio's Yurttan Sesler program. He worked for a certain period of time at the "Film, Radio and Television Center" of the Ministry of National Education of the Republic of Turkey. In 1966, he started working at Ankara Radio as a "trained instrumentalist".
He especially brought the folk songs of the Denizli region to the microphones with his voice and saz. He enriched folklore with his imitation talent, showmanship, jokes and Denizli accent, as well as the Aegean folk songs he played and sang.
The artist, who also appeared on stage in the 1960s, performed regularly at the Izmir International Fair since 1973. He shared the stage with many celebrities, especially Zeki Müren. He married Ayten Hanım, who was from Kütahya, in 1963. He played the leading role in a Yeşilçam movie.[citation needed]He took part in programs on agriculture and children on TRT. He was a member of the Repertoire Board of the Ministry of Culture Folk Music Development Center (HAGEM). His last television program was "Turkish Folk Music Requests" on TRT-1.
Özay Gönlüm, who took roles in radio plays and theaters, was very popular with his role as Letters from Nine, which was broadcast on radio and TV. He showed his social awareness by singing one of his most popular folk songs, "Solve it Al Mustafa Ali", as well as "Tax your receipt, Al Mustafa Ali" and inviting the public to collect receipts (receipts for taxes). Özay Gönlüm, who gave concerts in Europe, the United States, Australia, China and India, compiled more than 3400 folk songs from many regions, especially Denizli and Kütahya regions. He created a school in Turkish Folk Music with his theatrical talent, local performance technique, vocal interpretation and the trio instrument he called yaren. In addition to baglama, he also gave great importance to the cura and tambura techniques. He worked with many cura players in the Aegean region, from Ramazan Güngör to Hamit Çine, and played cura of all sizes in the programs he attended. He brought together cura, baglama and çöğür with his instrument called Yaren.
Özay Gönlüm, who has been admired for his folk songs for 34 years, lived with lung disease for 2 years. He was admitted to Ankara University Faculty of Medicine Chest Diseases Clinic for treatment. However, he succumbed to the disease and passed away on March 1, 2000. His grave is in Cebeci Asri Cemetery. He has two daughters with his wife Ayten Hanım.
