As of current Marvel, Zarathos is a Spirit of Vengeance and the most powerful one. Also as of the current Marvel canon, he was not made by Mephisto. He was created by God (as all angels were) and was captured by demons in Hell where he was corrupted and driven insane. He went from being the Spirit of Justice to the Spirit of Vengeance.

Nobody knows where Zarathos came from in the comics, if he were a demon or angel in the traditional sense Johnny wouldn’t have been able to save the archangel Michael in the 2017 comic

The Zarathos issue of Ghost Rider's first run is one of the most treasured comics in my collection. I loved how Johnny Blaze / Zarathos were a supernatural analogue to Bruce Banner and The Incredible Hulk. Zarathos had great significance in developing my moral values as I grew up. Though he seemed all-powerful and unstoppable, he could be defeated by love and personal sacrifice. Roxanne and Blaze's love for one another helped free Blaze from the demon in the final issue of Ghost Rider's first run. I've read all the following iterations of Ghost Rider voraciously. Zarathos is without a doubt my favorite villain in Marvel Comics.

I’d scavenge flea markets as a kid with a couple dollars in pocket, probably glancing at every one I could find before back tracking and making the hard decision. Killraven, Eternals, Inhumans, Son of Satan, Werewolf by Night, and Ghost Rider were my favored finds because they were far and few between, though I was content with any Marvel comics at that time. Funny to think how my 50k comic collection started with random issue progression and some stories I simply never found out how they began and/or ended. Today I was glad to learn that Blaze had a happy ending that first run. 50 years later but I still remember my gaps in those old favorites. I need to look into what’s offered through the Marvel Essentials collections. I lucked into Werewolf by Night recently so they must certainly have the original Ghost Rider.

Johnny Blaze isn't simply a host for Zarathos but a limiter to his full power. throughout his entire life as the Ghost Rider. He has constantly battles Zarathos in the mind barely holding onto some semblance of insanity and should his Indomitable Will to resist the Demon Falter. Zarathos can take full control and all Hell breaks loose. When he is unleashed he became so powerful even Doctor Strange stated that his power is "Boundless and Godlike" and he is the one who pop out Supernovas like pez. and if Zarathos wasn't terrifying enough he likes eat their souls for breakfast.

A lot of stuff left out and some things wrong, Blackheart re-bound Zarathos to Johnny in Crossroads and after the end of that story Zarathos was dormant inside of Blaze until Hammer Lane, and it’s been made clear that Zarathos prefers Johnny as a host like the time he was separated from Alejandra and made a direct line for Johnny

Angel/Demon are relative terms when referring to Zarathos at this point I think it’s stated the Spirits of Vengeance were failed attempts to harness his power

Zarathos was not "created by Mephisto" he was born from The dark energy created from the death of the Elder gods/demons from the Demogorge slaying

He and Mephisto were from the Elder god who made the Infinity Gauntlet and gems then committed suicide out of loneliness.

I was a bit bummed to see they left out the time Ghost Rider's Penance Stare had no affect on The Punisher because he has not remorse for the people he killed... Or how Venom's symbiote came out relatively unscathed from it... Those were awesome notable Marvel characters who proved themselves worthy adversaries.

The Punisher got hit with the Penance Stare three times the first time in the 90s series it worked on him, the second in Thunderbolts it didn’t because Frank was healed/purified by angelic means, and the third time he got hit he started vomiting showing it’s beginning to work on him again, Hulk never got stared but Johnny is 1 win 1 draw against Banner, Captain Marvel resisted the stare because the comic was planned for release the same week as her MCU movie and Marvel was pushing Carol as the “strongest Avenger” to build hype for the movie, Penance Stare fails on symbiotes Damnation Stare works on them

@gcell10 You are incorrect about the Hulk. Go back and read World War Hulk. Full-powered Ghost Rider turns and stares at Hulk. Only for him to turn around and ride away. Why?....cause the rider only avenges the innocent. The rider saw the actions of the Illuminati staring into Hulk/Banner's soul. That version of the Hulk is the complete version because Banner and Hulk are in control together. Please re-read World War Hulk.

@@12MRJERSEY I pulled Apocalypse Soon off the shelf and Johnny doesn’t stare Bruce, Hulk hammers Ghost Rider into the ground and knocks out Johnny then Zarathos takes over causes an explosion then leaves because Johnny chose to fight Hulk instead of chasing the “Jack Daniels” fragment of Lucifer, went through the trades and from Vicious Cycle-Heavens on Fire Johnny only used the stare on Dr. Strange, Mr 11, an Angel, Kowalski, The Deacon, Danny Ketch, and Big Wheel

One of my favorite appearances of Ghost Rider was in the Fantastic Four animates series from the early 90s. This story adapted one that was in the comics, where Galactus appeared to eat Earth.......again 😏.....and the FF got the aid of Dr. Strange to help stop him. Strange cast the 'Images of Ikonn', a simple illusion spell, to have him see the faces of all the people who were ever killed by Galactus on all the planets he devoured, and Galactus (already weakened from not feeding in a very long time) fell down in shock. In the animated series, though, we see Ghost Rider appear, having been drawn to the fight due to all the 'innocent blood' Galactus had ever spilt. The Rider then used his Penance Stare on Galactus, and it worked! 😬 To me this made much more sense than Galactus falling to a simple 'illusion' spell, the Hellish Magic of the Spirit of Vengeance made him confront the people he killed, and admit to the guilt he felt over his actions, no matter how much he tried to deny it. kzread.info/dash/bejne/mGea0q2redennM4.html

I'm Surprised he's not a universalized character like Thanos or the likes of Spiderman or Cap America. I mean a character that transcends time & space brining in the other characters like Doom or Punisher timeline. I'm also surprised they haven't brought him into the Punisher becomes a Space Ghost Rider trying to kill Thanos, which by the way is or was a cool series. No Johnny fought Lucifer in the first 19 issues of the 2006-2009 comic run and there’s a novel Marvel Untold Ghost Rider : Witches Unleashed that takes place between issues 13&14 where it’s Johnny/Zarathos vs Hellpyre, Marduk and Lucifer

Technically, Mephistopheles is Zarathos creator and therefor Ghost Rider's as well, the demon himself is only a power source through possession. I did kinda like the "God's Avenging Fallen Angel" version from the second movie (guilty pleasure lol). It did fit the superhero narrative better in the sense that even though twisted and corrupted by Mephistopheles, he still had some Grace left, that using his powers for good would be easier to achieve as opposite to a Pure Demon! Like as if seeking Redemption through Ghost Rider's actions.

This is a textbook example of why most comic book stories are weak. It's not that the general ideas are weak, but that the stories are just a childish mess. They have flimsy characters, illogical motivations, and events that are shoehorned into highly unlikely outcomes. It all just begs for better writers to take over the reins. As flimsy as the comic book movies are, they are a thousand times better written. What makes a comic book movie seem weak is the comparison is to other movies, which are often masterfully written.
