Whenever a non-shoto seems good, we get this vocal minority that freaks out. It happened with Manon on release, then briefly with Blanka, then JP, now Zangief.

No JP was dirty, normals were way too good in range and hitbox for a zoner and he had a million routes for gauge dmg, sideswaps, combo enders into crossup 50/50s etc; he needed an adjustment for sure

JP deserved nerfs but even before the first mini patch he was falling off (from top 1 to top 5) and he got nerfed twice as hard and thoroughly as any other character in the game. His first mini nerfs were arguably enough. He's not terrible or anything now but he has too play much more 'lame' to win and isn't as interesting/fun/saucy. Broader point is that when a non-standard character is strong, there is a disproportionate overreaction and exaggeration to their strength.

Coming from a lower level player, I can see the problem. Players like me make more mistakes which gief is going to obliterate you for, on the flip side he becomes weaker against higher level players as they know what they are doing. He's just very hard to balance really as someone is almost going to have a problem with his balance.

Gief mains are cooking right now because of the hype around the character. The best thing that can happen for Gief is his opponents getting nervous and Gief getting in their heads. All this chatter around Gief being scary and god character and S-tier is doing half the work for us!

Multiple things can be true at once. Also, how do we know the same people downplaying Ken are the ones saying Gief is too good? Ken is good, Akuma is good, Gief is good. I don't understand these reactions of being personally offended that some are saying that the character you play in a video game is strong, and we now have to pretend they're dishonest hypocrites. Also, it's more than 1 Gief in top 8, as you can clearly tell from the video? Brian goes over multiple players getting better results. And why has the Gief player in top 8 just worked _extra_ hard while the shotos/whatever other strong characters are there by default? Gief players don't have to work through some impossible gauntlet for top representation that other players don't.

@@gwen9939 The problem isn't that people think the character is "good", but how there are people who for some reason get angry if certain characters aren't good, and those same people get angry when other characters ARE good. And in fighting games it's normal that a percentage considers that shotos (Ryu and Ken) or rushdown (Juri, Cammy) characters must be good, but if a grappler (Zangief) or character with a mechanic like putting set ups (Blanka) starts to stand out, they say that the fact that that character is now good is going to ruin the game.

No other move in SF6 gets me hype like this one

Zangief is in a really good place right now. He plays how you would expect. Walks you down, capitalizes on a mistake, and it's guess for the game. He still struggles getting in, but he definitely gets more reward for putting in the work to do so.

From what I can tell major issue comes for resource management it is not that he is strong but he wears your resources while he keeps his. So he doesn't have to even get in to be winning.

I see it more disadvantages blocking because they can easily drive rush and you'll be stuck in a mix forever. I don't understand how they can see Zangief who is so weak defensively, be more than a mid tier character, makes me think they just don't know how to fight grapplers.

@@MarkoLomovic Seems to me you've never played the character. Most of the cast has a level one that strike invincible, Zangief's level one is useless for reversals. What about super level 2? 18 frames you can jab Zangief on wake up and still be safe. His only option is level three and wake up drive reversal which is ass and for super 3 which you only get once or twice if you want to save meter. So if you catch a zangief in burn out with only level one it's a checkmate if you block or get hit other characters can save themselves. He has to take your cross cut because lariet has no back hitbox another weak point in his game. Your only seeing some of the best Zangiefs in the world take this character to the top. People online rage against grapplers because they don't know how to fight them. Or don't even bother to lab the matchup.

I don't want to hear any gief overplay when KEN WASN'T TOUCHED

That's what I figure too, actually.

I love when you do these videos covering storylines and happenings in the scenes, I don't always get to watch all the tournament happenings and seeing them summed up like this is super nice. It'd be cool if you did this with all the potential storylines going into EVO. I think you might do something like this, or at the very least a recap, but I'll just be a voice to say keep doing what you're doing then lol

It’s amazing how a grappler is strong and people cry about it

The one thing I love about this balance patch and this game in general is every strong characters dominance becomes more of a skill check . Not to say every character is equal in equivalence but this balance patch really has every character significantly viable if you put in the time with them.

@@Miniko416 Make sense? Alright, they are VERY fucking easy to pilot, but have difficulty winning. They are made for people who have ZERO execution, ZERO combos, and ZERO fundamentals. I'm not saying Zangief is broken, but the archetype itself is inherently broken. They are made for people who don't want to put in a lot of time for a character. How does the dev compensate by making a character get 50% damage from 1 command grab? By nerfing his normal to the point where it's worst than any other character. That's how broken grapplers command grabs are. And saying "he has a hard time to get in" as if that's not the whole fucking point. God forbid the dev makes the character take skills and some fundamentals. Grappler players are complaining that they don't have normals, like they're not the one who choose an archetype that does 50% damage from one grab with ZERO execution. You're playing a character that requires ZERO execution here, how tf are you pretending to be some kind of saint that has been victimized?

Also saying grapplers are for people who don't like putting time into their characters makes literally 0 sense because there's a lot they need to learn how to deal with and unnecessary shit they gotta sluggishly walk their way out of such as Sim and JP shenanigans. You wanna talk about Gief being easy to pilot how about Guile, literally any shoto, Cammy, JP, etc??? You talk a lot about balancing buttons and high damage but completely ignore how high damage is extremely normal in SF6 and characters can easily dish out more than an SPD if they're optimal, characters have throw loops which can potentially end the round and put the other player in a counter hit guess for game situation, Deejay exists and can kill you off anything, most characters have usable reversals outside of wake-up drive reversal.

I don't mind these buffs if it means that lariat doesn't hit behind. Of course, if he gets nerfed, they should give him that.

Why do grappler players have such a victim complex? Nobody's freaking out or calling him broken, they're just acknowledging that he's a competent character now. Like Mena said he's not overtuned, he's just a good version of Gief. Anyone actually complaining about him is a vocal minority at best, no need to be defensive. But calling him "mid tier" is some insane downplay.

You're neglecting SFIV Greenhand Mode: Where he's a legitimate high-tier threat due to working around his weaknesses too much, and everyone loses their minds. I like him where he's at. I'd still like to see a few more quality of life adjustments (lvl 1 being active faster, tundra storm being worth *something* other than just a flex, stomps being an actual low etc.), but overall I don't want his power-level shifting much from where he's at. He should have meaningful weaknesses that can be exploited, he should have to work to get in range, but he should be threatening with potential for good reward once he does. I'd be sad if he got gutted next patch, and I'd feel bad if they just turbo-buffed him, too. I think Capcom has him in a good spot power-level wise. Maybe some things could come down a little, maybe some things could come up a little, but by in large I think any future changes should be for the most part net-neutral in power-shift for him, with a small amount of leeway either side. Right now Gief can still sometimes have issues playing "Street Fighter 6", but once he gets YOU playing "Gief Fighter 6", you're in trouble. That in my mind, is a good spot for him to be in.

I'm glad Gief is better now since my friend mains him, BUT DAMN IF IT TAKES ME ACTUALLY WORKING HARD TO WIN NOW

Not too long ago, Snake eyez Gief was cooked by a Guile player in Japan. That happened after the buff, so really not sure about Gief being S-tier. But Snake Eyez and Itazan is S-tier with Gief no doubt

I think Kobayan wanted to say "good" and not literally "god" in his post, keep in mind he is not a native speaker, and I am not sure if on this level of fluency someone would use an allegory like that.

I don't mind him being strong. My big issue is that all he does is 360 for an unbreakable grab while wearing down you gauge(I know that's not all there is to it but it can feel that way). His gauge wear is fine as an idea but stack on his damage and it feels horrendous. Grapplers in SF always feel like booty cheeks to play as and against. Gief green hand may have been egregious but sf4 also had crazy scaling and required a couple more interactions(the lowest/highest base damage for spd in sf6 25%/33%, sf4 18%/25%, EX in sf4 did less damage while sf6 does more than their non EX). I really wish they would choose something he does alot of(damage, drive meter, mind games) and stick to it. He doesn't need the damage if your drive is gone and forces you to play sf2 while he's playing sf3/4/5/6, he doesn't need to burn you out if his kit is good against a character with full drive all the time, etc. I had this issue with luke having everything under the sun and gief while not S tier is playing with fire.

my only fear as a gief main was seeing top players placing him top 1 on tier lists getting him absolutely destroyed in the next balance patch.. while they didn't do it to other good character, those characters weren't grapplers and historically it feels oftentimes grapplers get absolutely trashed by balance patches in fighting games the moment they're relevant.

It's moreso because I'm not the best at doing combos with Guile as I like a slower gameplan. However, I do have a little bit of Grappler Brain and sometimes I can just tell "Yeah, they ain't getting outta this one.". Though, I am extremely worse with Zangief in any kind of disadvantage.

GIEF is about MIND READ. You cannot do stupid thing. Everything you do has to have a purpose. you cannot throw normal in the air, jump, dash.... You have to read your opponent. That is all. With the recent update, his combo became more consistent ONLY. Lariat is still not fix, cross-up HP is still trash, and one think I like is the wake-up reversal.

Zangief is better than S1 BUT he requires players to master the game fundamentals to perform at top level. By fundamentals I mean, great spacing as beside his down LK being 4f, down LP is 6F and all other normals are 7F or higher; mastering of perfect parry as seen in the matches Brian showed which leads to require great defence skills as there is no invincible reversal for Gief (level 3 not included for obvious reasons).

I believe in large part, this is due to 2 things. 1: for a looooong time, people have neglected the matchup because all grapplers have been shit for since sf4. 2: gravity chamber effect. These gief mains finally have the training weights removed and are getting to play with a fair character! Not top tier but at least quite good!
