In this episode of The Sikh History Series with Bhai Surdarshan Singh Ji, we are narrated the story of the powerful Zamzama Cannon (Thaup). Narrated and composed by Surdarshan Singh himself, we hear about the sound of cannon fire made by the Zamzama!
"Thunderous roar” the Urdu meaning of the Zamzama cannon, also known as Kim’s Gun or Bhangi di Toap is a large-bore cannon, which was cast in 1757 in Lahore during the Durrani Empire.
This huge cannon measured almost 4.5 metres with a bore of 24cm - the largest ever created at its time. Being cast from brass and copper inlay with beautiful floral patterns and Persian verses. The inscription upon its back heeds the fear striking quote “ A destroyer even of the strongholds of the heaven”
This was used in battle by the Durranis from 1761 and the cannon was acquired in battle by the ferocious Sikh army spearheaded by Sardar Hari Singh Bhangi in 1762 against Ubed Khan!
This composition is called “Thaup Paran” and it describes the usage of the fire breathing cannon by the Sikhs and its devastating ferocity when fired in the midst of battle.
