Zakir Hussain and Dave Holland: Crosscurrents | JAZZ NIGHT IN AMERICA

Музыка

Tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain, prolific bassist Dave Holland and their international ensemble perform together as Crosscurrents, a musical exploration of the influence of Indian music on the jazz and rock scenes of the '60s.
Hear the radio episode: n.pr/2K3ZpgR
---------------------
by NATE CHINEN
Virtuosity - of a dazzling, ebullient, yet altogether generous sort - might be the most obvious bridge between David Holland and Zakir Hussain. But there's also a deep cultural foundation behind their musical dialogue, which forms the beating heart of a project called Crosscurrents.
Hussain, a peerless master of the Indian tabla, and Holland, an English-born bassist of sterling jazz renown, were both shaped in some way by the 1960s, a decade of awakening and convergence. In this episode of Jazz Night in America, we'll explore the influence of Indian music on the jazz and rock scenes of that era - as well as the less familiar story of jazz's influence on the subcontinent, embodied by musicians like pianist and composer Louiz Banks.
We'll hear music from a recent Jazz at Lincoln Center concert led by Hussain and Holland. Crosscurrents also features Banks, his son, drummer Gino Banks, along with acclaimed American saxophonist and flutist Chris Potter, Bollywood vocal star Shankar Mahadevan and Mumbai-based jazz guitarist Sanjay Divecha. We'll also get some valuable outside perspective from percussionist Sameer Gupta and other musicians in Brooklyn Raga Massive, which pursues a similar form of thrumming exchange.

I absolutely loved it, though to just push back a teeeeny tiny bit, I think some of the greatest compositions, whatever the genre, come from those who refuse to accept, “what is supposed to be”. Really, even this amalgamation of “east meets west”, was once considered some sort of blasphemy by “purists” on all sides, and would still today be considered vulgar by such folks. I know what you mean, generally speaking, and I agree, but I had to antagonize just a little. (If you want to even call it that, or push back, it really isn’t either.) However you want to define or describe it, this was absolutely mind-blowing, and imo, a perfect performance! ✌️

This must be one of the most cross-over-events that you can even imagine. Afro-american jazz gets married to Indian sort of tabla- and sitar-music. As I can understand, this marriage works out very well in the end, so pehaps we can say that this is a success marriage. This music will bring us to understand each other and make a stop for all stupid people that think that it is only their own culture and music that counts.

This is great stuff. Folks might also enjoy pieces by early Oregon, when Collin Walcott was their sitarist/tablist (from about 1970-1984). Walcott studied with Hussain's father on tabla (and Ravi Shankar on sitar). After Walcott's death in '84, they worked with another great tabla player, Trilok Gurtu. With compositions primarily by Ralph Towner, they're less overtly Indian in their styling, but there's clearly a strong cross-cultural interplay there. Kind of wish they'd been mentioned in that discussion of jazz and Indian music!
