7:00 solder _paste_ on the board, then use a hot-air gun.
Sorry John, its my job to spank you when you’ve been bad. 40 minutes of soldering an SD connector and 5 minutes of high speed soldering and 4 minutes to finish off. Just, no! Ok? 😂

😕... Yeah . That blasted SD connector has been unexpectedly frustrating. I'd like to find a technique that is viable for anyone so inclined to swing an iron at it.
May i suggest you to order a stencil e some solder paste? Would make your life a lot easier.

Sure... But I'm trying to find a viable way to do it with just an iron. Even using air was a bit of a cheat here
preheat the board at 150 degree celcius inbthe oven?

I'm an inch away from getting a hot plate. I'd like to be able to solder in ballgrids. A plate might make that viable too.
2 minutes tops to solder on a micro sd card reader. Flux, right soldier and a little hotter soldering iron.

It impresses me how much trouble I'm having with it too. 😩 I just got a hot plate that looks very promising at dealing with it.
Yeah... some high quality flux would help a LOT.

I just ordered a hot plate. That aughtta cure what ails me. Of course, even a cheap one costs more than a complete retro board. So not all hobbyists are likely to run right out and get one. I feel that it is important that we have s 100% through-hole (ez solder) option for beginners!
Easier solution to you tinning the the pins. Throw a piece of double sided tape onto the bench...it wont move when you try to tin it.

That'd be good too.
Speaking of soldering SMD parts to PCBs, here is an interesting idea: kzread.info/dash/bejne/pGSX1aqTpsi8prw.html

I saw that too. An interesting idea.
