Z06 Transmission Issue Took a Strange Turn

Let's just say, there's never a dull moment. However, I prefer those to come when it isn't my busiest weekend of the year. Looks like Z06 isn't going out this weekend.

@@kaseyc5078 Many of these GPS units are connected to other systems like security systems. Fuel/ignition/security system/ECM. For example the "KARR" security system. People think they are just GPS - but they have alot more functionality and dealerships tend to install them to ensure that they can find and take back a car if they have to. The GPS could 100% be throwing codes - and if it's not, like you said they just want a 3rd party variable out before they start digging into something especially if it could be electrical. In the comments here you just have a bunch of people who don't know what they're talking about.

Jeep said my borla cat back exhaust was causing my transmission problems on my 2022 jeep gladiator Mojave. Even though the problem didn’t start until they fried the pcm when they tried to update it. Then they said I modified it somehow reprogrammed the computer for bigger tires…… the tires and rims had 14,000 miles of wear on them. My jeep had 14,000 miles. The only thing I did was the borla exhaust, which CJDR USES for their performance exhaust. Needless to say, I won my lawsuit and will NEVER go to that dealership again. I guess, it depends where the GPS is wired into. If it's a direct battery to ground system, there shouldn't be any issues. Though, this is very ineffective as it would be visible and easily removed. But if it's wired near or close to other modules, voltage drops would log codes and cause these issues. I've seen it before when people would wire in aftermarket items, using random power and grounds behind the dash. A lot of those codes are blips in what appears to be voltage issues. They mostly all passed their individual tests, which says at that time everything is ok. As the car was stationary. But when moving the could be micro arching occurring. I would just check where the power is being sourced for said GPS unit. If it's accessing power and ground at the fuse panel it should be ok. But, that depends if or where it may locate the battery voltage sensor for either the start stop system or similar. Electrical systems in modern cars can be hyper sensitive to voltage. The smallest of voltage drops can cause these cars to become stupid. Even incorrect batteries cause issues.

All of the lost communication codes suggests either a voltage problem or a wiring issue. I could see how an aftermarket GPS install could actually cause the issue, but given this is a fiberglass car a bad ground could certainly be the underlying source. This would probably be an awesome opportunity for a KZread collaboration with the South Main Auto channel.

Certainly seems like a CANBUS issue has been created, could be as simple as a defective sensor or two dragging down both networks. Where exactly did you wire in the power for the GPS units? It could also be a dealer that doesn't want to work on your car, the GPS is a simple excuse to push it out the door.

Definitely some funky electronic issues based on those codes. A module seems to be shutting down intermittently and either throwing the whole car into limp mode, or total disabling to keep from harming itself. Could very well be a CAN bus issue, and one bad module in the system can take out everything else on that network. Hopefully the next dealer will be able to go the car, begin diagnostic and track down what’s really the root cause…I’m willing to bet it’s not a mechanical failure. Unfortunate part of that is it’s such a new car with a relatively low reported failures so far, so it probably take quite a bit of time to replicate and find the issue…then squire parts to repair said issue.

  • @OtakuSanel

it sounds like that aftermarket gps has shit power filtering and is putting a lot of noise on the electronic circuits. You would be amazed what cheap shitty lamps can do to home electronics. Interference even with just power is a thing and that can cause interference on the car's CAN bus. That gps unit might be faulty so you can try replacing it but can't fault the car or dealer because they are indeed correct that if you put bad electronics on your car, it's not the car's fault it misbehaves as it's a non approved part the car wasn't designed for. That being said this might be an easy fix by using a 12v to 12v power isolator to keep the noise off the car's circuits.

I had similar dealership issues with my old Nissan GT-R, the dealer had to be GT-R certified to service. But the other issue with the GPS sounds like garbage. Since the GPS hardwired into the system, even only for power, even if it's not the issue it will always be blamed. This is also why I only do factory stereos now, so if somethings wrong they can't blame an aftermarket (and probably better) stereo.

The problem with GM dealer service departments… they don’t diagnose and trouble shoot. It’s all throwing parts at it until the problem stop which is a convenient method of repair when you sell the parts at 4x the costs. If it’s anything like any other GM products, it’s using a can-bus, so the car is either getting voltage outside of spec or a ground point is broken. I’ve seen this exact list of codes on a Tahoe, no com with trans ecu, abs, transfer-case ect. Boiled down to cleaning and securing ground points on the harness and cleaning the contacts point on the engine bay fuse box. And GM thinks they’re going to corner the market in EVs too 😂

You tried to just read the battery voltage it off maybe also on? When a car has a lot of random codes it can just be the battery. Maybe disconnect the battery terminals in the car but still leave the battery in and run a chgarger on the battery overnight. Connect the battery the next day and see what happens.

My DCT has been problematic from day 1. Never stopped the car though. No creep message, check engine light etc..... I got a software update, didn't fix it. I'm up to round 2, flush i think. The dealer told me they tackle this problem in 4 tiers. Assuming 4 is replacement.

Man , have you all seen Speed Phenom channel and he could not find a Chevy dealer to mount his Z06 Carbon fiber wheels anywhere for weeks and went to Ferrari and they could not mount his run flats on CF wheels. Chevrolet first destroyed his CF wheels because they were not trained how to safely mount them , they gave him a replacement CF wheels but no dealer would mount them . lol

On newer vehicles, the ecu’s all communicate on a data link or canbus system. The ecu’s talk on those high and low side wires with “waves” of data. The entire connected circuit including the ecu’s has a resistance to those wires that “terminates” the waves so you don’t get what’s called static waves which is basically just waves of data stuck in the loop. If you have static waves or a problem with resistance, you will get failed communication from ecu to ecu(brakes, engine, transmission, airbag etc). It sounds to me like you have an issue with intermittent connection at an ecu. And with multiple codes for the brake module I would probably start there. I’m no expert on chevys or the z06 though. But with it being so new and intermittent, if I were you I would check to make sure all the main ecu plugs are seated and free of water. It could and usually is something that small and stupid when it comes to intermittent data loss, especially on newer vehicles. A lot of techs don’t know data link systems or troubleshooting as much as they lead on. I know it shouldn’t come to that especially with a new car but it is non-invasive to make sure things are plugged in fully. Either way I wish you the best of luck rob.

The lost of communications on the CAN bus is the most concerning set of codes and makes me wonder if you have a defective installation at the factory from a loose connector or a short somewhere in the system wiring. At first glance that appears to be the problem with the transmission & brakes.

That mentality is why people created the monster known as Carvana. There are plenty of competent dealerships across the board in the Auto Industry. Remember everyone can be in a mood or have a bad day. Consider the entire process when your dealing with a problem at your place of work. Then take yourself out of your position and put yourself in the customers. When it comes to anything aftermarket on vehicles, if it is not dealer installed expect pushback. If you were the mechanic and owner of a shop would you prefer to use the parts brought in by a customer or parts from your distributor? The best mechanics work on all types of vehicles and have seen it all. The ebay OEM parts vs what they only work with. They tell you to avoid Gremlins at all costs and please don't create them and then bring it to their shop to bring them to the light. Remove the direct power gps and use one of the trackers that do not need to get wired in on this vehicle and go from there. I expected these New Corvettes to have issues and they seem to have them in certain cases. If dealerships disappear you will wish for them to come back when they are gone. You expect an app and dealing with corporate directly is going to be a smooth process? Your delusional. When speaking with the dealer, avoid an attitude and be respectful. If your a prick from the jump, expect to be treated as such. If you know anyone that bought a used car from Carvana, ask them how smooth that was and see if they got their trade paid off and title work done. That company is a disaster.

Dealerships hate informed customers. They prefer the customer that will believe them when they say, "We can't warranty the blown engine in your new car because your tires came filled with nitrogen and someone topped off one of your tires with compressed air." Rob knows a thing or two about cars. He is probably at the top of their We Hate You - go somewhere else list.

The Allison transmission GM uses with the Duramax is the same issue. GM Techs have to goto training at school and certification obtained just to work on an Allison or perform warranty work. And not every dealer has that tech, techs are in high demand. I know because it’s my career. PS GMs modules get all messed up having a GPS plugged into the data port, none of the GMs like it. There is a TSB for it, even if it’s hard wired you had to tap power from a wire and that’s where the issue starts.

  • @EyeMWing

It's actually not *inconceivable* your tracking system is causing that particular mess of codes, depending on what exactly it is and how exactly it interfaces with the car. Those codes basically say "something absolutely shit all over both CAN buses and every computer in the car flipped out". If the GPS also happens to listen to CAN to do telemetry, it could very well be the problem. If it doesn't, depending on where and how it's wired to the electrical system, it might be causing a voltage sag to any one CAN computer, inducing it to shit all over the bus. I assume you haven't just tapped it straight to the battery because that would be entirely too easy to find and cut out, so it depends on what it *is* tapped into.

Sorry, having been a GM Technician, certified on all Cadillacs and all Corvettes and having taught the trade in college, I can say with all certainty you're talking about this without knowing all the facts. The dealership should have informed you that the very first step in strategy based diagnostics after verifying the customers concern is are there ANY aftermarket accessories installed? If so, return vehicle to stock. Making assumptions about electronics interfering with each other makes an ASS of U & ME. Tech is just following the published strategy based diagnostic flow chart. Now, that being said I'd put money on a defective ground, compromised battery positive connection somewhere, weak and/or fretted terminal connection or failing module.

Just wire the GPS unit to a separate battery back (Jump Pack or similar) that you can charge when the car's returned after each rental. That's a very simple fix that will nullify the dealer's TOTALLY BOGUS claims! Idiots. But do this and they'll have no leg to stand on. And when the issue's resolved, then hard wire it back in place.
