YVONNE ELLIMAN Hello Stranger
Hawaiian beauty, Yvonne Elliman, was not on the pop landscape all that long, but she made her impact, and her gorgeous face and sweet but powerful vocals graced the 1970's with a distinctive air. I am posting "Hello Stranger", as it is not one of her bigger chart successes, but it does showcase her wonderful voice and it is a very seventies take on the 60's Barbara Lewis classic.
35 years ago, "Love me", written by the Bee Gees, was a breakout hit for Yvonne, giving her a worldwide hit, including Australia, where it would ascend the charts and reach #4 in the late summer of 1977. "Hello Stranger" was discovered by me, once again courtesy of a Various Artist compile - the sexy styled "Ripper 77" with the curvaceous cheeks of a woman adorned with lipstick writing of the names of the 20 original artists featured on the record.
"Hello Stranger", like several of the hits on this compile, was not a hit in Australia, but three and a half decades later, it is a fondly considered musical postcard from the era, and i am eternally grateful to the record companies for releasing those compilations, even if some of the inclusions were bizarre and obscure. Back in the halcyon days of the late 1970's, radio airplay and tv shows like "Countdown" and "Sounds Unlimited" were the few outlets for songs to receive exposure. So many fine recordings were simply overlooked, because of the few opportunities for visibility or audibility at the time.
1978 would be the major year for Yvonne with another Gibb brothers extravaganza giving her the biggest success of her career with the #1 smash "If I can't have you", from the pop & disco juggernaut "Saturday Night Fever". Another movie soundtrack "Moment by Moment" also starring John Travolta, would see another recording by Yvonne Elliman - the title track, but the gentle ballad could not break through the endless litany of disco hits that monopolised 1979. Her own "Love Pains" was her final hit from that part of her career, and it is a much loved and much covered anthem from the disco era.
I hope "Hello Stranger" gives whoever hears it, the joy that it has given me.

Yvonne Elliman really did justice to this song.
Wish I could go back in time:))
Oh Oh i'm so glad I found this song.
With such magnetic, soul-rendering, ethereal voice, one would imagine she would make it much much bigger in the US pop chart....give her the credit for her true talent and skill, it surely is a MIGHTY LONG TIME~~ Yvonne, soldier on and SING LOUD and PROUD.

My favourite version of this has always been the original by Barbara Lewis. But I would say that it is closely followed by this Yvonne Elliman version. But then again I would say that. I had the honour of dancing with this incredibly beautiful lady in around the late 1970s (maybe 77/78) at the lyceum ballroom just off the strand in London. Possibly she could have been over here promoting this song? Anyway I just remember what incredibly exotic & captivating eyes she had. & probably still has i imagine. I hope she remains safe & well to this day, and that she's in good health 😀💙

the 70's produced the finest music of all time. It appeared that all the efforts of writing songs hit a magic something, at the same time, as if they matured into a procession of hits, as if they were organized to produce one after another and another. I was working in an automobile paint detail shop, next to a car wash, and Car Wash came on the loud speaker! I can imagine the people waiting for their cars had a little bounce in their step when that sound cut through the noise of sprayer nozzles.

Now that I remember, not even the stupid Beatle curse affected the seventies hits! I never thought of that before. Groovin', My Girl, Lady Marmalade and Signed Sealed Deliverd were among the tunes that made me move and tap my feet. I was forced, however, to learn that not everyone who moved, could really hear! They just copied those who could. The music could have had a religious connection, because it was toooo good. Like inspiration.

I was going to college in Joplin, MO, and this was a hit over there. I know all three of the radio stations at the time gave it plenty of play time, which was fine by me. One of the few songs that I never got tired of, and it's still my favorite 39 years later.
"Hello Stranger" has always, always been one of my favorite songs, from the first moments I heard it on the radio, back then. Few other songs come close. Interesting to see how its reception was so lukewarm, which, I having always loved it, just baffles me.
I never heard this song, before I heard it on boom radio, love it.
