Old Canadian jazz geek here: When I learned that 'Autumn Leaves' was originally a song written in French entitled 'Les Feuilles Mortes' (the dead leaves) as a soundtrack for a 1940's french film noir movie that was rewritten in English as 'Autumn Leaves' for an American audience, I got inspired to learn to sing it in the French lyrics. And this video, featuring the very suave Yves Montand, guided me to be able to do that. And I've found that, generally, the audiences I've sung to get that the French lyrics -even if mostly they don't understand them- fit the music so well. Thanks, Yves, for Being such a good musical guide!

When I think of it it's so weird that a French song with initially no jazzy swing to it would become a jazz standard. I guess that's what happens to all elite songs written all over the world, they become standards in pretty much anything. Lyrically also, in French, it's pretty powerful as you stated and rare are the songs that could get even near to it.

The drama of this tune in French depends on the opening section: exactly the part that's missing here. Anticipation of the familiar chorus is what makes it beautiful. Swing versions have their own merit, but it's a whole different feel.

It hits so much different when you see him as an old man singing it, it's as if he embodies the very feeling of the lyrics.
