Yuval Noah Harari: Why We're All a Bit Colonialist

Ойын-сауық

Some people feel strongly that all colonialist legacies should be eradicated. Is it possible to achieve such a goal? Well, when such views are expressed using imperial languages (spoken by over 90% of the world's population), the answer is clearly - no. The idea that you can go back in time and erase all traces of colonialism is simply unrealistic. But just because we received certain legacies from our ancestors, that doesn't mean we have to behave like them!

That's a good point, I think especially the changes in behaviour part is crucial. Restoration of inherited balances and stuff like reparations is often trickier because it's tough to implement without creating new anger and potential injustice, because it's hard to quantify when so many generations have passed and to give something to someone you have to in most cases take it away from others, and that's hard to do without impacting some people who may not be connected to the sins of the past, or others who may not feel they should be punished for the sins of their forefathers who they had no control over.

This man is intellectually subversive and morally dishonest. One simply cannot put old political systems on par with modern ones. He totally ignores the creation and role of the UN system and international laws after 1945. These were precisely set up with the aim of putting a stop to the lawlessness, criminal wars and injustices of the past, caused first and foremost by European States waging war against one another, culminating in the most devastating world wars, which wiped out scores of millions of people across the planet. By doing so, he tries to justify the continuation of unspeakable war crimes Israel has committed and continues to commit against the Palestinian people for the last 76 years.

Judaism has genocide in its DNA so does Christianity (also lays claim to ownership of the Old Testament) Jews and Christians have been ethnic cleansing for 2 & a half thousand years ! The observation from a Hebrew speaker raises a thought-provoking question about the potential for successful language revitalization efforts to inspire similar movements focused on learning and preserving more specific, often endangered languages. The revival of Hebrew as a spoken language in the late 19th and early 20th centuries is indeed a remarkable example of linguistic and cultural reclamation. Given the Hebrew language's triumphant resurgence, it is worth considering whether this model could serve as a blueprint for other communities seeking to reconnect with and safeguard their linguistic heritage.

Colonial legacies are not necessarily negative, and that we cannot simply discard them. However, we also cannot ignore the injustices of the past.nor present.. Many aspects of modern society, like technological advancements, scientific discoveries, and democratic principles, have roots that predate or developed independently of colonial systems. Colonial powers often introduced infrastructure, education systems, and healthcare services that improved living standards in some regions. Additionally, cultural exchange and interaction fostered new forms of art, literature, and music.Do the current colonial powers deliver on this? Does Russia for example? Does Netanjahu? Many countries have achieved significant progress after gaining independence, demonstrating that alternative paths to modernization, colonization is not q requirement for progress.. We should focus on building a more equitable and just future. This involves addressing current challenges like poverty, inequality, oppression, apartheid and environmental degradation. We should recognize the genocidal intent and acts of current leaders. Extermination , forced displacement,, withholding aid water and food, dehumanization of citizens, using food as a weapon, destroying hospitals. We should not use the languague of genocide a la Amalek "kill alike men and women, infants and sucklings" not only because it is inappropriate, but also because it is counter productive.

You also mentioned injustice and said that we should not repeat. Well said. However, what is injustice? Does everyone believe in the same moral of justice? Short answer is no. That doesn’t mean we expect to reverse everything that was done. Bc of the actions of those in the past, we have new cultures that exist, we have new demographics and societies…. People are born where they are born, without choice, without fault. Of course we can hold people of today accountable to the actions of others. However, we can acknowledge the impacts and effects of those decisions, and make new choices on how to love forward from here. If we focus on the present and future…. Israel has all the power and is slaughtering children… they’ve already done it, it’s in the past…. However those responsible are still alive today. A man rapes a woman… both are still alive, she’s suffering the trauma of that experience…. You want us to just forgive him? Bc we can’t fix it? Just take it as a reminder that we need to try to prevent rapists in the future. Forgiveness has to be earned… does it not?

The dead don't care any more but they did care. Do we care only to live now? Well some do, but if we care for more than the now, why do our concerns cease mattering later? The now is inherited from the then, we should pay respect to that heritage. There are many biases that can be connected to a lack of care for dead concerns, even a bias to make the living dead, to rid us of concern for their concerns... It seems untenable. If you say we should only care abiut the living and the future, to some degree we restrict reasons to live for tomorrow, we limit our trust for today. We limit our potential. Therefore, the full virtue and justice care about the dead, care about what they cared abiut, care about their truths, care about their efforts, their investments, their lessons and their reasons. Care doesn't mean worship, obedience or constraining ourselves. It means treating the voice of the past as if it still speaks today among the living. Speaking to that voice like we speak to each other, even in disagreement.

Furthermore, there are no ressources in the West Bank that the israeli sttlers are luring. All they want is the land without its inhabitants.
