Yuri Milyutin - Soviet composer, People's Artist of the RSFSR (1964), laureate of the Stalin Prize, second degree (1949).
Yuri Milyutin was born on April 18, 1903 in Moscow into the family of an employee. In 1918 he graduated from the Moscow Real School, and later also received an elementary musical education. He was a dramatic actor at the Chamber Theater, the Moscow Sofronov Theater, and at the Moscow Experimental Heroic Theater, for whose performances 19-year-old Milyutin composed music.
In 1921, Yuri Milyutin graduated from the studio of the Moscow Chamber Theater, and in 1924-1925 he was accepted as a composer and pianist into the Blue Blouse pop group. He wrote dance music and songs for the miniature theaters “Crooked Jimmy”, “Peacock’s Tail”, and the “Don’t Cry” cabaret. In 1924, Milyutin made his debut as an operetta author, when “Ballerina of the Imperial Theaters” was staged on the stage of the Moscow Hermitage Theater.
In 1929-1932, the composer worked as a pianist in Moscow cinemas, headed the musical department of several theaters: the Simonov studio, the studio theater under the direction of Zavadsky and the Satire Theater, and wrote music for their productions. To complete his musical education, in 1930 he entered the Moscow Regional Music College, from which he graduated in 1934.
Milyutin became widely known for his patriotic songs of the 1930s and the period of the Great Patriotic War. During the war years, the composer performed with concert teams in front-line units, in hospitals, and wrote music for military ensembles and choirs.
Since 1945, Yuri Milyutin focused on the operetta genre. His works were characterized by rapid development of action and clarity of musical characteristics. The composer often used elements of folklore (Russian, Hutsul, Latin American) in operettas. Among the most famous works in this genre are “Girl Trouble”, “Trembita”, “Chanita’s Kiss”, “The Circus Lights Up”. Milyutin's operettas were also staged in theaters in socialist countries.
