if i believed in a god i'd imagine the sun would be a good place to start. the equinox is recognized by every ancient religion and an athiest can certainly relate to it in an honest way also. every wild animal also knows the warmth and light. the sun is the common denominator for all life. yea it's kind of the sun is god to all creatures and organized religion is the path for man, of the different cult followers of odin, jesus, mohammed, budda etc. the sun goes up and depression goes down. it is jan. 8 , 2018. we gained one minute of light today and i am grateful. thank yew arith very enjoyable show. take care gare

It's good to see Mr Tico again and of course, the most important man, Mr Thorstein. It is now the time to prepare for this year's Yule and to look forward to the new year. I really hope that the coming year is kinder to you my friend, and to all. The only improvements that I can reccommend is more of Airk and let me help you pronounce solstice, it is better to say the second syllable as stis rather than stice. I'm glad that this video was on my reccommendations list as I can't remember if I saw it before, however it was worth watching again if I had.

as a filipino whom have lived in the tropical philippines for most of my entire life...the winter season is something very exotic for me, now during christmastime I always get to have baby jesus and santa as the most common figures in the season but exploring more of the pagan and more ancient pre christian side of it makes it more endearing for me.. I didn't know that yule came from the word where it means -wheel which very much connotes to the wheel of life or the circle of life, the cycles of birth, death and rebirth...got a bit tired with the commercial and materialistic side of xmas though.. and spirituality and paganism is a breath of fresh air

Well Arith, there is a celebration on the longest night of the year in the eastern culture, originally Persian. In Iran, it is called Yalda, which seems very similar to the Yule! This ceremony dates back to more than 2000 years ago in Iran. The people still celebrate this night in Iran and some other countries. But the similarity of the Persian term (Yalda) with Yule is really interesting for me. I reckon these cultural similarities are not accidental. But I cannot find how did it happen.

Saeed, you might want to look into the world's original monotheistic religion called Zoroastrianism of Iran. Modern Persians of Iran are their descendants and they worship around an altar of fire, which is a sacred force. Zoroastrians also have a connection to Hindus (they fled to India when the Muslims arrived in Persia). Hindus also have a winter solstice celebration. You're right! No coincidences!

Putting presence in a box - make something with love, kinda like chanelling energy through or into a talisman or similar? Sadly, nowadays the presents are made, fashioned or imbued with anything, no presence in the presents. ;-)

Roast root vegetables and overwintering vegetables. These would be turnips, carrots, rutabegas, etc. And hard types of squash like pumpkins, acorn squash and butternut. Also incorporate tree nuts like chestnuts and filberts also called hazelnuts (which grow in Northern Europe) for Yule. These are Yule foods because by this time of the year food was getting scarce and these foods keep in a root cellar (cold cellar you can find out how to build one properly) so you will not starve before the early spring vegetables start growing. So they are celebratory.

Odinn? Bodies on the trees?? Now I need some new decorations! I don't suppose you can give us a visual reference for that, like stone carvings or manuscripts? The manuscripts were PR tools also for the early Christians, so accuracy of actual practices might be questioned. What would Snorri do?

Gnostic Christianity (related to mysticism) was banned by the Roman Catholic church about the time the Roman church last reworked the contents of the Bible. My take on this is that the church could not control the mystics who spoke in tongues (unknown or ancient languages), had spiritual possesions in the presence of holy beings, and had visions and rapturous trances. I'm not sure when she lived exactly but look into the Catholic mystic Santa Teresa of Avila (Avila, Spain).

Fact: Yule was Not celebrated on the the Winter Solstice. It was celebrated on the the Full Moon following the first New Moon After the Winter Solstice. King Haakon changed the celebrated day to the Winter Solstice so pagans would have to celebrate the same day as Christians. Christmas was celebrated on the Winter Soltice according to the old Julian calander, this was changed to the 24/25 with the Gregorian Callender. Yule was a 3 day holiday, not 12.

Many ancient sources say Christ was born on December 25. Yule was the 21st. So, Yule was moved to Dec. 25, not Christmas moved to Yule. Saturnalia and Sol Invictus were 4th century A.D. festivals, more recent than Christmas. Instead of trying to denigrate Christianity by saying a cross or a feast day could "easily convert pagans" (whom you are thereby saying are stupid and weak), you should talk about the fire wheels of Yule.

Jesus is the Sun. Son. On 12/25 the SUN goes into the constellation Crux. Then turns it’s path back to “Aries “ or spring. This is the Jesus story. The path of the Sun. I celebrate Yule by a fire on the Solstice, a Fine Meal on The 24th. Gnomes and Lights and a Tree. Gifts and a Meaningful toast to try and get my wife to shed a tear.
