If there is one thing about filler and/or non-Japanese Yugioh content I enjoyed, it was featuring supporting characters in active roles. Tea, Tristen, and Grampa all got to actually affect the plot

So Capsule Monsters were actually Takahashi's favourite game in the series, more so than duel monsters. If cards hadn't made it, he would've done that instead. He actually wanted to make this. The reason it wasn't made sooner was because konami executives didn't think it was a good show idea. As for 4kids, it might have been a more cashgrab idea so technically the series was made with both cashgrab and passion in mind, but since 4kids was the driving force of it, idk if Takahashi was ever even involved and thus, the cashgrab is much more in the forefront

I never watched Capsule Monsters, but you explaining the plot of a millennium item being used by a real historical figure sounds super interesting and makes me wish this was expanded on. Like you said, the millennium items were definitely underused despite how much they were originally hyped up.

This was so horrible. It should've never been made
Thank you for acknowledging that 4kids really isn't the devil that we liked to make them out to be as children. I hate censorship as much as the next guy, but 4kids was a localization company that were just trying to present a product to an American audience in a way that was practical at the time. I find it really cringy when youtubers tear into them like it's still 2006, without a hint of subtlety or nuance given to the argument; and I'm glad that what criticism you do give of them is backed by a pretty rational lens. It makes your criticism of the series all the more credible in my view.

Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed the video :)
I honestly think Monster Capsule is one of my favorite Yu-Gi-Oh! games in particular. In Breed and Battle, those high octane matches are extremely fun and each monster has their own unique gimmick to make them all special. It's like an advanced version of chess, and that's why it's good 👍
Not trapped, but Shadi also tried to read Yugi's mind at the end of Duelist Kingdom only to almost fall victim to a trap within the labyrinths of the Millenium Puzzle but being saved last minute by the concious manifestation of Yugi, who says that his other half has secrets he wants kept hidden, but isn't inherently a bad person who wants to hurt people.
One positive about capsule monsters that I don't think I've heard anyone else mention is that I think it has the best design for the characters. Yugi especially looks cooler with a heavier jacket for some reason.
imagine how horible censorship in season 0 would have been if 4kdis did it

As a westerner I didn't learn until much later about Yu-Gi-Oh! Season 0 but as a kid I LOVED Capsule Monsters & Duelist of the Roses PS2 games and wished they would keep making alternative format games like that.
So….. being an Irish kid who WATCHED capsule monsters when it aired I had no clue that it aired I. Ireland first 😂😂. I remember seeing it and wondering why atem was back after the series ended. It was so confusing to my young mind 😂😂

They really tried to make this into a Spin-Off.
Well, it's easy to answer what went wrong with Capsule Monsters - it was responsible for GX getting dubbed late and - as a result - Season 4 of the show not getting dubbed. For the best honestly, because I doubt the dub would try to make much sense of the Japanese dub's retcon of Zane's cause of death in Season 3 anyways.
@lpfan4491
Жыл бұрын
It will never not be a weird thing that one of the biggest positives of the dubcontinuity is that Zane actually died. One would think the fanbase hates the character with a statement like that, but the death actually happens at the end of the season where he stops being overly antagonistic and starts being properly likable.
Well completely forgot about watching this. Also remember reading the manga section about capsule monsters. You know it probably had something to do with the cash grab but I like to think that people that worked on it also were passionate about it. I probably shamelessly in love Yu-Gi-Oh duel monsters and anything attached to it. And I would have watched more episodes if they had made more lol. They could make any new manga/anime based around the original Yu-Gi-Oh an I'd still watch it today. As long as I felt there were people passionate about it working on it. Rip Kazuki Takahashi his creations will always be apart of some of the best memories I had as a child.
I love Capsule Monsters. Didn't see it until I was an adult. Still one of my favorite Yu-Gi-Oh! "arcs". What's stuck out most to me is just how witty the dialogue and jokes can be.
I saw the first airing as a kid in Ireland. I remember it being very weird but I was glad Yugi was back after GX. I thought it was going to be a full series but unfortunately not.
I had a disk of it with the 3-4 last episodes when I was younger. Thank you for proving I'm not going insane and I didn't just imagine these episodes
I've had the idea of making a video myself about how 4kids handled the yugioh anime and how in many ways.... they actually kind of improved on it. Well, some of it. The introduction of the shadow realm/shadow games added an air of mysticism to the series, especially since they would never need to explain it. Not to mention, the original OST they created for the series, while different in tone to the japanese version, I think added a lot to the series. The Egyptian theming and instruments create so much atmosphere to the fact that Atem is supposed to be an Egyptian pharaoh. This is something that the original series' music totally missed out on. These are just a few of the things I'd prolly talk about. If you'd wanna make a video for yourself, be my guest.
I liked the Idea of Game variants that use a gameboard (Capsule Monsters, Dungeon Dice Monsters, or moving the cards on a field like "Duelist of the Roses"/the Labyrinth of the Paradox Brothers). The advantage over the cardgame is that their is another tactical aspect with the moving of the Models and in some cases that multiple monsters can overwelm a strong monster. Games like these would have made more sence for a "Duel Academy" for example, being more "Tabletopstyle" games since simply building a Deck and drawing cards.
Honestly, the funniest thing about it all is that they didn't bother making Studio Gallop animate a unique scene of Kaiba with a capsule launcher, so when he appears in the opening for marketing reasons, they just reuse the same old clip of him with the cards. On the whole tho, This wasn't even that bad. It's not just randomly placed in the world because it is partially in reference to the flashback in Season 1 of Bakura's father buying the millenium ring, it highlighted some actual canon lore(as in, it is applicable to all continuities to my knowledge) to anime dub-fans that eventually came back, it's not even the worst arc of the show and I personally always enjoyed it, even if it still confuses me when it is even meant to take place, outside of official sources capping about it arbitrarily taking place in the middle of Season 5. I just wish this got a japanese dub, like Pyramid of Light did. Heck, the JP-dub is actually listed on Gallop's website because they made the original animation that 4kids edited, which is sorta annoying because it just never came out.
Shadi trying to read Yugi’s mind and getting lost in the mental maze DID happen in the Duel Monsters anime. After Yugi beats Pegasus, the whole gang goes to his sanctuary to look for him. When they leave, Yugi is the last to leave and encounters Shadi.

This just reminded me of that Legendary Heroes arc where they go into that virtual world. The Niwatori card was important for a bit. The princess was genderswapped Mokuba and also Mystical Elf if I remember right.
I had a capsule monsters videogame on the ps2 and it was fun. Capsule monsters also had its roots in season 0.

Watch the video
I didn't know this existed until a couple years ago while watching through the episodes in the dub with a friend. I forced myself through them, and they were okay, but not great. It was definitely a momentum breaker whereever it showed up.
The capsule monster chess chapters are some of my favorites from the manga and I kinda feel like the CapuMon mini series kinda misses the entire appeal? I believe a big reason why the Yugioh TCG became as popular as it did is because the show is all about playing the game and you get the rules through exposure, making it a Pokémon knock off completely removes that aspect, the feeling that you can actually play the game with your real friends is absent because they aren’t really playing a board game. Honestly the idea of mini arch focused on CapuMon, with Mokuba (the CapuMon Champion) as the final boss could have been so fun, maybe set it as a tournament in Kaiba Land, have Kaiba use his Blue Eyes CapuMon from the PS1 game, maybe Duke Devlin could show up with an Orgoth or Strike Ninja CapuMon, idk there’s a lot of potential for a really fun series based around Capsule Monster Chess and I genuinely feel like this series wasted it.
Shoutout to the Dark Cloud background music that's a throwback
I really liked this arc actually, it was creative and new. The battles were very engaging, particularly the final boss battle against Alexander. The fact that he also had a supporting team and one piece of fusing armour made it feel very 'balanced'. Also cool is how it's set up like an RPG campaign where the Yugi & co. first get super crappy monsters but then build toward much more powerful and iconic ones like BLS and Red-Eyes.
Wasn’t this a filler arc also? I’ve been rewatching the series on Hulu and this is an arc in the final season I never knew this was supposed to be a separate series lol it’s true you learn something new everyday!
I saw that 10 to 15 years ago in my childhood and to this day I still have fond memories of Yu-Gi-Oh! Capsule monsters we lost our DVD for I think it was the entire adventure in the capsule monsters played out in a movie format on a disk (no breaks for ads no “last time on …”) I still remember when they insulted the furniture monster by saying that their mother was a “China cabinet” 😂😂😂
Capsule Monsters was good both the anime and video game for the ps2,and like the fact Kaiba wasn't in this one since he was own tournament and waking the dragons arcs before.
I appreciate you using rouge’s desert level theme in the beginning. Any SA2 song is badass
i literally had no idea that this was a separate series from yugioh until just now 😂
Aw as an Irish person I remember really liking this season. It kinda reminded me of back when the kids in Digimon were stuck in the digital world. I had no idea that us in Ireland got to see this season way before the rest of the world. Unless I was watching it as a rerun, I could have sworn this season happened before the final duel between yugi and atem. At least I remember it happened way before the gx show happened.
I liked the Capsule Monster anime and I still do. Also, Alexander‘s ability to see Yugi‘s mind was via the Seven-Armed Archfiend.
I started watching build divide because of your videos and will give the new shadowverse a shot as well. The op for build divide is really sick tho👍🏻
It's weird but for me capsule monsters was just another season or arch. I really didn't think it was much different than a trip into virtual reality taking several episodes.
I think it’s too bad that Capsule Monsters didn’t work out. I really enjoyed it and would have love to see this concept incorporated into the other Yu-Gi-Oh series. Heck, at one point I even came up with a small plot line for a GX version of this series, including which characters would be included alongside Jaden on his own Capsule Monsters adventure.

Hey, Sevens is better on Disney XD!
On that last bit, I got an interesting theory in that this was an attempt at both. Pokemon was on the decline and that perhaps they wanted a way to bring in season 0 without censoring it to hell and back, and thus they came up with this as their way of doing it, under the impression that it'd be successful. Obviously, it didn't.
I had no idea this was an American production! Also that dark cloud dungeon music reminds me that I never finished that game after seeing it in a resale store lol
I was expecting this video to be way longer 😭 Good info tho, didn't know this existed 👌
I subscribed because I can see your channel getting big and doing great the only thing I would have liked to see in this video is the game and how it looks, plays, and feels since series like this one are so closely related to selling the game being played there could have been opening lines of thoughts like why would they go from card stock to action figures and so on. regardless I can’t wait to see how this channel grows
Given how Konami is searching for alternate ways to brand Yugioh to avoid the current game state they should revisit these ideas. Giving someone the ability to have adventures in the duel monster spirit realm does a lot to bring the entities to life.
me and my brother beat the ps2 capsule monsters game countless times and is a staple in our home, this special yugioh game has a place in my heart and forever will be.
15-year-old me thought this was alright. I remember buying the first six episodes on DVD I think in spring of 2006 and then the other half came out in the fall around when the series aired on TV.
i love the capsule monsters series but that's probably because i'm easy to please and freak out over all the monster armors
I remember seeing a few episodes in the mornings while waiting for the bus and being confused
I was super excited to watch the series because I loved the video game so much, had no idea about the game or anime until about 2007. Out of all of the filler archs I saw from animes as a child, I only remember Capsule Monsters and the opening to Dungeon Dice. I wish they'd bring them back again because DD and CM would be great iOS/Android games.
“Previously, on Cr@p” -Little Kuriboh Because of him, I can’t not refer to Capsule monsters as ‘Crapsule Monsters’.🤣👏
Great video, but the best thing is the Dark Cloud OST in the background. Dark Cloud, Legend of Dragoon, and Golden Sun get so little attention I feel like I'm hallucinating them.
I only learned this arc even existed a few years ago. I was surprised it had eluded me.
Ngl I don't remember much of it but as a kid I LOVED capsule monsters, I loved the classic yu-gi-oh but GX and further iterations never felt quite the same to me, so finding another anime with the same old crew and Yugi I grew to love was so amazing Wish they went back to the roots somehow
I remember watching this in Ireland, being so confused because it was later played between season 4 and 5!
I actually didn’t know this was it’s own thing. I know I saw it as a kid but assumed it was a filler arc when looking back. So yeah I guess it wasn’t marketed all too well.
As I recall, Pokemon started to regain its popularity around Gen 3.
might sound stupid but the quality of this video and the dark cloud music in the background got you the sub lol
Remember watching this on RTE and only one of my friends knew about it. Yugioh was super popular at the time in my school so we sounded insane to all the other yugioh kids
On Yugi's first duel against Kaiba he used a Blue Eyes White Dragon which is where Kaiba got the idea of recreating the feeling of death that a Game of Darkness provides.
Brooooo I freakin remember watching this as a kid as well. I wondered why this never came up when I rewatched the anime later
That electric monster is an actual duel monster called "Kaminarikozu", a Thunder monster that's the identical counterpart of "Electric Lizard"
I actually had the capsule monsters manga, and the Tamagotchi one, I always thought it was interesting just how different it was from the Anime, and the artwork was really enticing
Wow I didn't expect to see the old The Den logo today. Had no idea in Ireland we had some Yugioh before everyone else. It was always broadcast at an awkward time where Id get home from school but I'd miss the firdt third or half of the episodes 😅 Good times
Don’t forget that kaiba’s the one who drops the key in the water during the battle city Joey vs Yugi manga version. That was big for him
Here's what I would've done. The story would be set shortly after season 5 and before The Dark Side of Dimensions. Atem would only appear in flashbacks as Yugi is now on his own. Capsule monsters starts to skyrocket in popularity and Kaiba releases a new duel disk for the game. Joey wins a trip to India, Yugi and his friends duel Alexander the Great, yadayadayada... There would be a post-credits scene in the final episode where archeologists in Mexico come across ancient statues of monsters, turns out these monsters were a part of a mystical game that was played by the Aztecs. We end on a cliffhanger as the monsters come to life and surround the team of archeologists.
I saw it for the first time a couple of years ago. I thought it was alright. Kind of reminded me of the virtual world arcs in the YGO anime. I think the main problem was that it didn't have an appealing real world game to connect to. Well. Not one that I remember seeing anyway.
yugioh capsule monsters coliseum on the PS2 was one of my favorite video games of all time in my top 10 list i absolutely loved that one having fire emblem into yugioh
My brother and I watched rhe whole first series on kids wb, but around 2005-06, I quit watching Saturday cartoon because I was in that early teen phase of sleeping in. So I'd always miss it, I didn't start watch anime till like 8th grade again. Which was 2008 is so didn't know this existed.
Dang Capsule Monsters was made after GX aired? I remember them including Capsule Monsters sometime between the Atlantis arc and Memory arc in reruns.
I honestly like playing yugioh Capsule Monsters as a kid. It was one of my favorite games for a while
Technically capsule monsters was called capumon in the manga. And it's pretty much a diiferent game having different monster designs and even rules
The yu gi oh game based on the capsule monsters part for PS2 was legendary asf
nice choice of background music lol. i know the dark cloud dungeon music when i hear it
I found this series fun, it was different characters long redundant had actual roles to play. It has a slow start and severe flaws in its story but I liked it. Expanding its story maybe featuring Bakura who already has a part in the backstory and was underused in other filler could of helped.
I always kinda wanted Dungeon Dice Monsters to be a thing.
Closest Yugi came to summoning the Blue Eyes White Dragon. Unlike the time he used Monster Reborn on the ghost of Kaiba's evil. Or the filler where Yugi fought the digital ghost of Kaiba's adopted father's son.
I played the video game on ps2 and absolutely loved it… im still hoping to see a remake of it some day although I know it’ll never happen

I liked it :3 I remember when I was little a promo for it aired on TV, but that's it. I guess I missed it or it just didn't air or something. But I don't think I missed it, as I don't know how I could miss the whole spinoff. Then like soooo many years later It aired on TV again and I saw it. I was just like "omg its that one thing that I never saw.".
I really enjoyed dungeon dice monsters. I wish ddm or this capsule monster game was given another chance as a mobile app similar to that of duel links
The Playstation game Capsule Monsters Coliseum is actually a fantastic game, it's one of my favorite games from my childhood
I wasn't aware anything was wrong. I personally loved Capsule Monsters, both the PS2 Game and the anime. I only wish it could have included more characters like Mai and Kaiba. Joey getting that Red-Eyes armor was badass, just sad he couldn't keep it. Yugi also fused with Magician of Black Chaos and Black Luster Soldier. The final battle was exciting too.
I like this ova more than the Duelist Kingdom arc(manga and anime) It has a focus, adventure, slice of life and more importantly, it has quick battles /duels instead of the drag and drag just to make a plot twist or have a deus ex machina in the end just to stretch
I’m Irish and I remember watching this when it released anomalously early here although I didn’t know that at the time. The airing was probably a mistake but Ireland does get a lot of world premieres of different shows and movies and I don’t know why
that dark cloud music tho
Crazy, I just played Capsule Monsters on the PS2 today for the very first time.
I think it’s tragically the later. I would love if capsule monster and dungeon dice were still a thing.
Yugioh Capsule Monsters was the first Yugioh game I played and I loved it.
As an Irish Child who just got absolute Nostalgia fucking whiplash, yes it was extremely confusing that this just appeared on TV.
I quite liked the capsule monsters series lmao
I’m surprised dungeon dice monsters didn’t catch on
I had the DVD of the first part of the anime, but I seriously never saw the Capsule Monsters game in stores. Hell, more stores carried the Pokemon TFG!
it was basically a discount pokemon show. you pick your monster and send it out with your wrist thingy and they fight.
they should have done a dungeon dice monsters spin off instead
I actually really enjoyed Capsule Monsters i had the whole thing on dvd as a kid
Liked for dark cloud background music
I love the classic so much that I'd eat up capsule monsters if I knew about it at the time
Will have duel links on my channel soon! Your video makes me want to move my feet quicker
Not often you hear Dark Cloud songs in video's xD
I hear dark cloud music in the background, I give the video a like
Pokémon's popularity was low? Gen 3 really got the short end of the stick, didn't it. In 2005, I was 8 and loved Pokémon. And now I'm 25 and I love Pokémon. In theory.
