I feel like with JRPGs there's a difference between "hard because of Insane boss battles" and "hard because of annoying bs random encounters where monsters block you from escaping and spam insta-death spells"

That's why most JRPGs can't actually be difficult per se. Particularly turn based ones. If the rely on party wipe bs, or rng that can completely screw you over even if you're prepared.

I feel like a lot of JRPG's tend to do the thing where they just add more enemies to a fight in order to make it difficult instead of just adding more moves to the boss as the fight goes on. One thing that I like about Ys is that it usually doesn't have fights like that and when it does, it actually feels balanced in a way towards the boss you're facing instead of just being slapped in there with no forethought.

Yeah, I've found ARPGs where you don't have party members to be way harder and more tedious. That's why the newer Ys games are more my cup of tea (also because RPGs feel "lonely" to me when you don't have party members). Looking forward to playing Origins though; that's the one "old school" Ys game that I'm really interested in.

The action oriented style, especially of the newer titles.....I just wish Falcom was able to find a wider base of fans for these games because I think western players would enjoy the pacing and combat. I feel these games should be more popular, especially by now. Ys 3 on SNES was my first Ys game and it handed me my ass. As a kid i was not ready for how difficult that game was, but looking back I really would like to play it again. Great list, also i appreciate you at least addressing Ys Strategy and Ys 5, the latter will hopefully be released in NA soon. Thanks Erick!

Honestly there is an easy answer to this. Very few physical copies are made for the US audience. They sell the small amount they make quickly and don’t make more. I’ve never seen an Ys game in a bargain bin ever let alone on sale with a big discount. This is the reason I feel why many don’t know about them. Other series like Tales and FF you can easily find for cheap and on sale at times.

About YS Origin, is true that Hugo's campaign is easier overall, however Yunica does have a projectile attack that makes stuff easier in the late game, some of those sections seemed to be designed with projectiles in mind since the enemies are so annoying so at that point I just stopped using Yunica's melee attacks other than for the bosses.

If u find an enemy that auto spawns that u can kill with one hit u can just use something to hold the attack button down and walk away. Come back in a few hours to see how many levels u gained just make sure that u secure the button well so u wouldnt stop attacking while youre not paying attention. U can do this really early on in the game. And just do it again as needed.

Nothing obecene like Final Fantasy, everything was a breeze. Including Majunun (with RNG on my side ofc). All I did there was grind for gold and spam seed of power and beat everything level 51, which was fairly easy to get. DIdn't even max out all swords. Only the shock one. The Ys games while easier as time went on, the old school ones do require a strategy guide when you get stuck. Because while you can most certainly level grind in Ys 1 and 2, you will get to a level cap where you can't level grind further and if you are stuck and don't know where to go, that is when I would often resort to a strategy guide like on game FAQs.

So as someone who only plays Ys on the hardest difficulties now... - Hard disagree with Celceta's placement, I personally struggled a bit with it compared to Seven (maybe I'm just bad but yeah). - Ys 8's Inferno mode can be pretty Brutal, I'd honestly put it higher (maybe above Ys 1 and 2). - I see you shown a snippet of gameplay of the DS version of Ys 1, props to you for that (I love the DS one personally)! That version is so much easier though lol (bar a couple bosses) (even on Nightmare). Actually I'd personally say the DS Ys 1 is a bit easier than Ys 9, but otherwise I agree with Ys 9 being easiest. - Your top 2 are 100% spot on! I'd put the original Ys 3 above Oath in Felghana though tbh, for sure. The only bearable version of the og Ys 3 is the Genesis one imo because it has a max level glitch you can execute at the start of the first dungeon (even then the end dungeons still suck though lol); the rest can die.

Ys III: Wanderers from Ys can seem brutally hard if you just attempt to straight up fight the bosses as if you were playing something like a Castlevania game. There is a secret to beating each boss and most can be defeated in a few seconds by exploiting the secret. Most of the bosses can be defeated quickly just by equipping the power ring and then jumping while holding your sword out in just the right place on the boss' hitbox to where you will continually do massive amounts of damage for a few seconds at a time. There are some videos here on KZread of Ys III playthroughs that will show how to fight each boss and you may find yourself surprised at how some seemingly impossible bosses can be taken down so easily. Also, the Sega Genesis release is probably the least hard of the versions because the gameplay mechanics are more smooth than the others (this especially makes the platforming less of an annoying task in a few infamous areas), though you will miss out on the wonderfully awful voice acting from the Turbo CD version if you go that route.

I'd definitely agree with the party member games being easier, though I'm not sure how I'd rank them relative to each other. Between between healing items and party members none of them strike me as especially hard compared to Oath or Origin on Nightmare/Inferno. I played 8 most recently. and even with bosses that can 1 or 2 shot you, with all of the items available you can almost face-tank some bosses and just heal through it, instead of learning to fight the boss near-flawlessly like you'd have to in Oath or Origin. Oath was definitely the hardest. I ended up putting it on hold for so long that when I picked it up a few years later I had to replay the entire game to sharpen my skills enough to finish the thing on Inferno. There's very little room for error on all of those boss fights.

I'm only wondering because I'm just getting back into the genre pretty hardcore after being out of the loop for over a decade and I just bought most the Ys games as well as many other series from sword art online to star ocean to final fantasy, all the tales games, dragon quest, Sakura, neptunia, .hack, death end request 1 and 2 to standalones like scarlet nexus, caligula effect which now has a sequel I also bought as well as blue reflection 1 and 2... I mean a lot I literally JUST bought over the past few weeks and the Japanese sale for playstation a few weeks ago I bought out.. I spent thousands literally building a library and now have to decide where to start and was honest to God looking at the Ys games before I ever saw this video just because honestly they didn't look as exciting as a lot of others. But if they are tougher than so many others then I won't start here, sorry for the storybook ha, are they games super difficult???

I've only beaten two Ys games on Nightmare: Monstrum NOX and SEVEN. For IX, that was actually on my first playthrough. NOX on Nightmare felt easier than VIII on Hard.

Ok the first game I find that even on easy I can't beat the fight at the west gate seeing as I can't get my character past level 24 as I don't have any dlcs everything is pretty much done and I can't get past wave 5 I'm currently playing the one we're you are trapped on a island and I find it pretty good that one big guy who is using a anchor as a we@pon is awesome

Origins is easy, just a question of grinding, I even didn't know you could upgrade your weapon and fast travel in the first playthrough, so my level was super high of grinding and going through all floors each time. Ys VIII is harder due to more tactics involved.

Erik Says he's bad at action rpgs. Ys8 isn't really that hard, I played it on hard myself. Make sure you do everything during Dana's playable parts (especially talking to the short pink hair girl and trying to 'find' her when she plays hide and seek). I believe that's what's required to unlock the final 'dungeon' and boss. The true final boss was really weird. I only did it once so maybe my impression is off but I was like 'is this a joke? This is easy'... for like 5 minutes... and then I realized it was like 5 more minutes and I was like 'this is still the same but.. for some reason it's not easy anymore'.. and then by the end I was actually worried I might lose (but I didn't). It was interesting. I never met a boss like that before in gaming where it seemed easy at first but then I realized it wasn't so easy and NOT because it suddenly changed forms or phases or something, it just kinda gradually sorta happened without me even noticing.

My views have certainly changed on it and now that I've played almost all of them, i can say it's one of the worst. But terrible? Not even close. Great video... and yeah Ys III is definitely the hardest I've played so far, but I beat the Genesis version a few years ago! It was NOT easy. Won't be doing that again lol.

The story of why play YS3 on snes versión its because my brother has the cartridge and one Day he remember never beat the first or second boss in this game (the green mage on this video) and i decide try and holy f shit, this game only remember me how i suffer trying to beat battletoads, ninja gaiden or ghost n goblins its only suffer and masochist play.

For real though... my first Ys was the PSP versions (Napishtim, Felghanna, and Seven) in that order then the Ys 1 and 2 remakes and then Celceta up to Monstrum Nox... The older versions HARDER than the modern one's... It became easier in Ys Seven due to not only having party members but also having a wider arsenal of skills and because of that thing called "FLASH GUARD." Mastering Guard and Timed Dodges will make the game too easy for Ys vets unlike the old versions who didn't have that mechanic..

I hated Ys 3. I rented it, and remember beating it, BUT I must have gotten bored with grinding and found an invincibility code or something. I don't remember the story at all and just remember running and running until the game just kind of ended and left me in utter disappointment. Many years later I discovered Ys Origin and loved it, so I went back to the start. I played and loved Ys I-II on Turbo CD, then thought, ugh... Ys 3 again.... I played it on the Turbo CD this time..... and.... it was great! I guess I just didn't have patience for it as a kid.

5 is an absolute joke difficultly wise. You can demolish everything in your way with little trouble, the final boss is an absolute mockery, the only thing that is properly a pain is having to grind for money which takes forever. It’s so easy they had to re-release the game with the difficulty increased! Usually it’s the other way around but Ys 5 is such a breeze it really needed that

Isn't Ys 5 kind of infamous for being the easiest game in the series, to the point where Falcom rereleased it with a higher difficulty a year later due to negative feedback? Also, the Turbo Grafx CD version of Ys 3 is actually pretty easy. Like, slap on the Power Ring and buzz-saw your way through the last boss in 30 seconds easy. It's just the SNES version that's stupid hard.

I definitely felt most versions of 1&2 were the hardest. I refuse to bother trying the PC copy above normal, too much NES era bullshit. I've beaten Oath in Felghana and Ark, of Napishtim, and Seven all on their hardest difficulites on PSP and PS2, and I'd say their ranking is still very good on your list aside from my feelings of 1&2. The PC version of Oath in Felghana (and Origins by extension, same game engine) are both much harder without the healing boost you can get in the Oath in Felghana PSP version. And Ys 6 has various modes, such as the PS2 version difficulty and a restricted healing item mode more like Oath in Felghana (again, seems to be same Oath in Felghana engine).
