Thanks!! Charlie was a total legend with the interview, it was the end of a long day and yet he made time to chat on camera. For me that speaks volumes about all that is good in this hobby.

Thanks Hylt, very kind of you to say that. I think there are three things that made this course really valuable. The first is to help with the imposter syndrome and provide some validation that I am doing some things right. The second is to get constructive feedback from Charlie about this channel and to identify areas to focus on for improvement moving forwards. And the third is to be able to benefit from Charlie's wealth of experience by asking his thoughts on ideas and future plans. So I think anyone who attends will get to benefit to different degrees across those areas.

Charlie was spot on about the prices. Completely mad just now. A KZread tip is that audio is as important as video. Nice one. Mike.

Hi there, at 9:07 it doesn’t sound awful at all - I am that person in my early forties with a mortgage and a young family! It’s not just the cost element, it’s space too. I built a small OO gauge layout which I had to dismantle and reclaim the wood with the children needing the bigger rooms as they grow older. The reclaimed wood went into the smallest room for an N gauge project. There’s also the time element, it took me three weeks to assemble a basic set of terraced houses in odd minutes I could find here and there, so apart from cost, the barriers of not being able to choose where you’d want for a layout or make progress at the speed you’d want would be something a lot of people would be scratching their heads to work around. Admittedly some people might like the challenge, but it is an obstacle. Agree totally that stock should have an option where it’s less detailed and more robust in order for people to find their feet….top video and cheers!

Thanks for sharing those thoughts. As a community I think it's really important to be able to talk about the challenges of this hobby as well as sharing the things that make it great. Someone at my club once said to me that this is a hobby for people with money, time and space. As you say, not having all of them can be an obstacle but hopefully not an unsurmountable one in every case. Modelling will find a way when the time is right, that was certainly true for me. @@DonningtonCastleModelRailway Thanks for the reply, I must admit the above issues do get the mind going! Do you go for a smaller scale (like me) in a smaller room, do you go for highly detailed small layouts and dioramas to get your teeth into, do you even consider a railway in the garden with no room in the house? The thing with most people like me is that we have the space for a decent layout - but other people live here too! One channel I would highly recommend for cost effective, absorbing and brain taxing modelling is Chandwell. Michael makes all sorts out of the most basic of materials, using cereal boxes, birthday cake packet plastic and printed textures with amazing results. Just researching what you’re going to build takes a good while, so it really keeps the interest up. Rolling stock is the most expensive part, followed by track. Scenery costs nothing compared to those so channels on here and people getting good advice from club people can give a great bit to think about. Charlie is right, a lot of the hobby is based around people of the age where their kids have left home and there’s more space/finances to play with, but there’s definitely options before then. Thanks for the recommendation, I'll take a look at Michael's channel. I'm trying my best to find cost effective solutions where possible, but you're absolutely right that there are some things you have to buy. I'm really lucky that I do now have access to a space where I can build the layout I always wanted as a kid. In some ways I wish I had kept an interest in the hobby during my wilderness years and had built smaller dioramas and shelf layouts when I was living in small flats in London. But those years passed me by. Hope you are enjoying the channel and thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I’d 100% recommend the diorama and small layout route as you learn things for the day the big layout comes, it can save a lot of time and effort when there’s a million and one other things to do! Great video. It's always good to hear Charlie and speak a few truths. He's verbally slapped my face on a couple of his vids (and I told him so when we meet at WC) I'm fortunate to have a Grandson who is into it - not that I influenced him at all... BUT as he hits his mid-teens how much longer will he be 'mine' when the inevitable lad's nights out and girls take over?

Thanks! Always good to hear about young people who are interested in this hobby. I certainly had an extended break once all those things came along. Not sure I realised how long that gap would be, but how I got back into the hobby is a story that I may tell at some point.

Ahh so this is one of the people who Charlie mentioned mid last year about taking under his wing about something a concept which unfortunately I would be instantly excluded based on my house keeping at the front of every video. Well that and being on another continent but glad you took the moment to share with us I notice some of the ‘power users’ or those that enter monetary territory get a bit secret society when you reach out to them. Anyway I appreciate you sharing your journey for the rest of us keep up the great work.

Thanks for the support. One of the first things we did at the session was to share our reasons for creating each of our channels. This was surprisingly varied and to me it felt very inclusive of different motivations and aspirations. One of the things I enjoyed the most was meeting other people and now feel more connected with their journeys.

@@DonningtonCastleModelRailway You nailed it. I mean we all have a reason for it even though the common goal is to share our journey with the community and exchange ideas. I’m certainly in the minority where I don’t promote Liking subscribing etc and certainly am against things like patreon but each to their own and here are. For me the production and videos are just about me and having fun the video about the model golf course or indeed my cricket ground are probably my faves to date and we’re as much fun editing as they were building. But rest assured I have some massive projects that will see the light of day in the next couple of months anyways stay safe see you in the next got get my head around this ESP from DCC CONCEPTS

Thanks Mark. I’ve not been back in the hobby long but I am shocked by how little feedback the big manufacturers seem to take onboard from their customers. More worryingly some now seem to be actively silencing the feedback they don’t want to hear.

Charlie is so right about the costs of locomotives and rolling stock. I really don’t see the point of super detailing. Some of it is bordering the ridiculous. In some cases, you can’t even see it! It’s just plain daft that each time you pick up a model or remove it from its box, you risk damaging it. I m not one for buying a model just to display it. I accept there are those who do and that’s fine. However, I want to run mine on a layout 😊.

Totally agree, most of my locos and stock were made about 10 years old and are bought second hand. With some minor servicing they run perfectly, look great and are robust. And they are a fraction of the price of new releases.

@@DonningtonCastleModelRailway Absolutely. I’ve still got locomotives from the eighties and nineties. When I got back into the hobby a few years ago, I was amazed at how things had moved on. I have newer models and rolling stock but most of it is second hand. Things like sprung buffers are nice but what’s the point?

With all the reviews that are now filmed in 4k in extreme closeup I think it puts pressure on manufacturers for their models to look good under those conditions. But when one of my Lima 47s is pulling some MK1s on the far side of the layout it looks the same as the new tooled versions!

My solution would be a layby where you put a deposit of maybe £60 onto a loco and every week you pay £20 towards that loco till you’ve paid it off in full then you are able to take away the loco, shops like cash converters do it and shops like cash generators also do it! It would give people more of an opportunity to purchase a £169.99 loco

You’re right that the industry needs to talk to its customers to find approaches that work. I know accurascale have payment plan options and increasingly independent model shops are as well. Anything that allows more people to enjoy this hobby is certainly a good thing.

Americans call it lay away , in Australia we call it Lay by . It's very handy for buying Christmas presents especially for the kids where you have 3 months to pay it off .
