Were you actually able to change the tempo of an audio clip accurately, or did you enjoy the video like I did but respond prematurely?

This is very useful, thank you. And thank you for all of these videos, the've helped me a lot. If you have static jumps in tempo (rather than a variable change - say the chorus is always 3 bpm higher than the verse) is there any difference, functionally, in just creating separate tempo tracks for each region of the song?

When trying to render out my click from a MIDI click, there is no audio being exported. It does show the tempo change automation in the newly rendered file, but no click audio in the newly generated click file. Suggestions?

thanks for these super helpful videos! i'm having an issue though with printing the tempo information. i went back to the Ableton project of the original mix, dragged in the click file and successfully followed the tempo information of that project. so i rendered the click track with the tempo changes and that all worked. but when i put that click wav file in the Ableton project for my live set, there is no midi information or anything that follows the tempo of that project. so it sounds all in time when you forget about the song tempo of the project. but i do also want to have the correct tempo changes visible in the master tempo. am i doing something wrong here? thanks for your time!

HI ! Thanks for another awesome video. Can you mix "LEAD" clips with " FOLLOW" clips in the same Session ? I tried to to speed up a tempo in one song, and every thing ins that song messed up, I believe every track was equally warped. Please ! lets collect signatures and send ABLETON massive a list of users requesting Markers to be able to be imported ! Lol, such a useful and forgotten functionality!

Hey, this is super interesting and useful and I'm about to convert a huge coverband set from session into arrangement view. I ran into one problem with songs with tempo changes. My click tracks are audiotracks with the tempo change "baked in" and the files don't come from ableton/not a project with tempo automation which I could render with the track. Who can I use these click track as a tempo track? When I try to warp the click track, it doesn't really warp the clicks as quarter notes - I guess because the tempo is not constant. Any ideas/help?

You’re on the right track. Warp the click and make it the tempo track. I’ve done this many times for wild tempo changes and works really well. Feel free to setup a coaching session if you need some help making the transition happen: fromstudiotostage.com/pages/coaching

All good. But what if I want to save a song's complex tempo changes but then make minor adjustments to the bpm's in a live or recording session to match a singer's tempo choices?

1-fire the singer for making bad suggestions...if that's no a possibility 2-do this and use a tempo track for sections you want to adjust. I do it all the time and works like a charm!

I know this sounds dumb but I have trouble figuring out the bpm of a song I have in my head, and as I try to lay it out in ableton, everything sounds off beat and is noted off beat as well, and I clueless as to how I can find the bpm without trying to compare it to another song for Im not really trying to sound like another song in the first place.

Play the track with the metronome enabled -> click in the Tempo box -> use the up/down arrow keys to adjust the clicks, until they sync with your music track. Once in sync, the Tempo box will display the BPM. Use looped playback of at least 8 bars.

Why do you create a separate tempo track? Couldn't I just use the original click track, warp it, and set that as the leader? It seems like that would save a step. I know in another video you talk about doing just that in particular with songs with tempo changes. Also, where is time signature info stored? Do I have to manually change that in the composite set for every song everytime (including meter changes)?

Check out next weeks video! The tempo track keeps it consistent if you don’t have a click track track with your content. I.e just need a click, or using stems without click. But if it works for you and your setup-go for it!

As far as I know, they can only be warped in the Sample Editor.

  • @TheBinaryWolf

Unless someone can prove me wrong, changing the tempo of an audio clip in Ableton by entering the BPM in the Tempo field is NOT possible. In the Sample Editor, the speed can be warped but without specificity because increasing the BPM in Editor stretches the waveform: you must SLOW the tempo to SPEED it up, which must be a bug. Maybe there is a plug-in available for this task, but nobody to date has demonstrated that Ableton can actually change the tempo of an audio file by typing in a number for the BPM.
