Your smartphone is leaking your information | Bram Bonné | TEDxGhent

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Bram is a PhD student in computer science at the Expertise Centre for Digital Media at Hasselt University, where he specializes in computer security and privacy. During his PhD, he developed an interest in privacy-sensitive information leaking from smartphones and laptops. At TEDxGhent 2014, he will scare you by showing the information that is available to anyone willing to listen. But don’t worry, he will also explain what you can do to prevent privacy-sensitive information from leaking.
Computer sciences PhD student
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

I'm seriously considering switching to an old 80's phone, buying an old camera, get rid of my computer and start using cash instead of my creditcard. There's no other way to stay safe in todays society! Heck I can't even trust my refridgerator anymore...

I'm on the same path =) No social media since new years eve! Before that, I had a 1,5 years break from fb, insta, snap etc. But I "relapsed" xD This time is different, I've deleted all of them, and for another reason than less screen-time. I've become aware of the INSANE data collection and profiling all these mega-companies are doing on you. It's terrifying! Social media companies now more about you, than you know about yourself. Details about you in your everyday life, that you yourself don't even think about, are stored as part of your identity-profile. It even extends beyond your devices. Facebook, for example, knows what you stuff you buy in your towns local store with your credit card... (let that sink in for a minute)...

You brought up some great points, some people don't realize that "Free Wi-FI" can be dangerous. it's scary to think how easy it is for someone to be the "middle man" and see your data and location.

I bought a Motorola smart phone. They wouldn't let me use it at all until I agreed to something or other. Then they wouldn't let me use the camera until I gave them all my data, contacts with friends, permission to contact friends, etc. Why is this not extortion?

Celebrating one week today Smart phoen free. Rocking a flip phone with 350 minutes a month ill never use all of. Also deleted FB (was only social media i ever had) and day one was so happy how great and focused i felt. Still riding that out now. I dont even carry the flip everywhere i go like i did the smart phone. I DO keep the flip in car since i live in country and if i break down need to call the auto club. When im out with friends it stays in my car. Same for at family dinners. Back to basics!

So on iPhone I can only see the networks I might have joined previously if I look while I’m there. Then there’s an opportunity to forget each one in turn. There isn’t a list I can check and delete offline or at home? Seems not. So ‘reset network settings’ takes ‘em all out, passwords included, and you be sure to ‘forget’ the insecure ones in future. Don’t accidentally reset the whole thing though. Just network settings

Jan Geirnaert - If you have a WiFi adapter (the radio portion of your device that sends and receives data) that can be put into ‘monitor’ mode, you can view any and all of the WiFi signals around you. If someone’s device isn’t connected to a network, their device will continuously send out unencrypted requests to join networks that they have previously been connected to. You can then just ‘scrape’ all of those requests and log them. As far as the ‘Man In The Middle’ (MITM) go, its a bit too long to explain here. Just google it.

There are some general guidelines you need to take into consideration before picking a VPN. 1. Never choose a free VPN 2. Never choose a VPN from the 13 eyes 3. Make sure you can trust the VPN provider because I have been instances where companies turn over data. However, I've seen nordPVN do a a good job when it comes to reliability and Trust
