For anyone that might be planning on doing this and feel a bit leery, I would recommend taking pics of everything before disassembly as you go. Also, get some paper cups or other small containers for all of the different screws. You might even want to label them with where they came from. Doing this keeps stuff from getting lost or mixed up and gives you pics to reference when putting everything back together and connecting the wires. 🙂

I'm no longer confident with disassembling and reassembling PS products, therefore, I'm certainly not going to go in depth with this particular machine. I recently disassembled PS4 (original model) in order to clean off and reapply thermal paste inside the CPU. I followed a tutorial, which I thought was easy to follow along. During the disc drive detachment, the tutorial said to LIFT the lip to remove ribbon, instead of PRESSING DOWN. A tiny piece of the T-shaped ribbon broke off inside the lip, but I didn't think anything of it at the time. As it turned out, now the power & eject button no longer responds, and disc drive no longer accepts any BR & games. :(

If you're not confident enough to do a full disassembly, just go as far as removing the fan. Then get a UV torch and a long q-tip used in electricals. The torch highlights where dust is, making it glow light blue. With the fan removed, you look down the cavity space, down the length of the console below the fan, and you can see the 'cheese grate' PSU holes, and fish out any dust bunnies with your q-tip. Personally, I did a full disassembly and found it not really worth it in my opinion. There wasnt much dust in my heatsinks. Most of it was on the PSU holes which I could have just as easily cleaned using the way I described. Its quite a design flaw to have these important vents, facing upwards, directly underneath the fan... dust just falls straight onto them.

Get a small handheld vacuum with a bendable hose. If you take the fan out, you can bend the hose into the power supply and vacuum it out. I havent seen any dust buildup on mine and ive opened my ps5 4 times since owning it. The fan will get a decent amount of dust on it as well as the exhaust vents. But a nornal vacuum will reach those and you dont need a special mini vacuum for those. Im guessing as long as you consistently clean the fan and exhuast ports, the power supply won't get buildup on it.

I had overheating issues and the fan going crazy with certain games and when I got my Ps5 checked, the insides were clean even the PSU. Apparently, the liquid metal slid down a bit creating a dry/hotspot on the APU. Yeah, he didn’t mention that & should’ve for clarity. However, anyone that has any familiarity with warranties is going to realize that pretty quickly. There are exceptions but just about any warranty is going to come with a clause that the warranty is voided if the defect stems from misuse of the product or owner made alterations that affect/disable the product. Still, I agree. It’s important to make disclaimers about things like that for viewer clarity & just as a legal precaution. It might be that he’s made so many videos that involve disassembling the system so it’s just assumed knowledge for his regular viewers to anticipate the warranty being nullified if you do anything more than change out the covers or possibly add an SSD. But if anyone is a first time viewer or hasn’t gathered that assumption yet, it very well could lead to some real issues for those viewers.

You can solve/prevent 99% of the dust issues by removing the covers and the fan for a quick cleaning. Take compressed air and spray the console out thoroughly after a few wipes of the inner covers and tooth brush on the inner cooling grates, and put it back together. Job done. No need to take anything else apart. Several vids of this procedure online. If you do this once every 6 months you shouldn't ever have to do an extreme teardown like in this video. I just performed this on my disk version PS5 after only purchasing it last Black Friday and it had a lot of dust even for a non smoking environment. I agree the console needs a redesign but I am impressed with how easily it disassembles and allows for memory expansion.

It's currently illegal to have the "warranty void if removed" sticker on products and yet Sony hasn't been called out on it on all PlayStation consoles. A law was passed sometime in the 1970s. When I heard about that I went ahead replaced my 12 year old PS3's thermal paste 2 years ago and it has been absolutely silent since then. Some thing with the fat PS4 going on to 8 years at the time. The amount of TP they put in the consoles were SUPER small which is why the fans are so loud. That and the thermal paste at the time was also dried up.

I haven't tried to take apart a game console beyond removing the top case since my old PS2 launch model design I had in 2009. That time the power ribbon got accidentally yanked out from the motherboard and even when buying a replacement power ribbon the console never turned on again. It would take forever for me to learn how to disassemble electronics such as game consoles confidently and put them back together

I’ve been using an air compressor to avoid taking the PlayStation apart. So far so good. Ps5 used to overheat when playing games at 120fps. Blasted it from every hole and angle I could with a high psi air compressor and have been all good ever since. I’ve done it twice so far without issue. Just be sure to put something through the fan so it can’t spin.

After that I bought a vertical PS5 with cooling fans, and got 3 more cooling fans attached the back,so it's keeping the bottom cool and back side. A total of 5 cookings fans. No more problems.

Or buy a magnetic duster with reusable heads, like the Flash one which is actually unbelievable in terms of the dust it attracts. Use that every couple days after use. And buy the vertical or horizontal dust cover depending on your consoles orientation, and it totally protects the console when not in use from everything.

I have the type of dust cover that is now $30 off of Amazon but was $20 at the time I purchased it and it has little holes to still keep the proper airflow while it’s running. They’ll give you some double sided adhesives (6 of them) to put on the console and once it’s securely on, you’re good to go.

Hi John! I gound this very helpful. However after taking apart my PS5 to see if there was dust buildup, I was surprised to find out it was perfectly clean. My question is, if it isn't the dust or fan area that is causing overheating and power off, might it be some of my settings that are just letting it run too high which causes the shut down? Thanks!

I did this without taking the whole thing apart. I just removed the covers and removed the fan and took my air compressor with my long rubber air tire inflator and just stuck it in there and blew it out and mainly took it and pushed the air through the backside of the ps5 where the vents are. It looks brand new in there now.

I did this before, you should watch TronicsFix video on opening the ps5 for a more depth+tools links for doing what this video does. Be very careful, if you feel like you don't have the patience or time, do it another day, or don't open it as much. The one and only time I did, I forgot the blue ribbon cable that connects the external buttons to the actual console (on/off, eject) and my heart stopped. I only clean the first side vents and inside the area with the fan now.

This single handedly saved my day 1 ps5 i always only cleaned the fan and the inside the best i could with canned air but about 3 weeks ago my ps5 started to overheat to the point of only 5 minutes on the homescreen id get the temperature alert. I called sony after the 3rd time the alert popped up and since ive had my ps5 for about 2 ½ years the warranty was up and sony wanted $300 to send it in and look at it and at that point i said to myself id rather just spend the extra $246 to buy a brand new one since theyre available but this video appeared to me today and though i was not confident to do this i did and cleaning the power brick stopped the alerts and my ps5 is going strong once again thanks for the video!

I think in non smoking room as mine clearing fan once each 6 months will do the job together with clearing outside dust that collects on surface for like every 10 days . I play about 3 hours each day at least and if I intend to play again I make 2 hours pause and completely turn off console. Even after 3 hours I can barely feel warmth on ps5 when I touch it with hand. Also i dont ever hear fan working unlike with ps4 which had habbit to go crazy with games like God of war and similar. Also clearing fan of ps5 is so much easier compared to ps4 ( slim ) and God forbid ps3 where I had to completely take apart entire console ( ps3 slim ) . I think ps5 is really friendly console regarding all this.

Jesus Christ. I’ve opened up & taken apart (only what was necessary) my Xbox 360 and PS4 to clean them thoroughly, and been fortunate to have no problems afterwards. However, THIS, taking apart my PS5 completely to clean the air vents on the opposite side of the console is another level. Truthfully, I would be content taking care of my PS5 electronically (i.e system settings), on the outside (dusting/brushing/pressurized air), and even opening it just to remove & clean the fan. I’ve heard of design flaws, but this is asking too much if you want to keep your console in good condition. I would only go this far if I absolutely had to.
