I just clicked on this video because of the catchy title but what I got was the first explanation of modular synths i understood. Damn. Congrats man.
Until this video I couldn't understand why people would get those modular patch cable noodlely systems to design sounds, but that diagram and explanation made it allllll click immediately. Excited to play with Malevolence

@jc3drums916

Diagram was slightly incorrect. Filter comes before amp, not after. Also, I can't speak to these synths specifically, but some semi-modular synths don't include every possible patch point. For example, with the Make Noise 0-Coast, there is no way to patch anything into the Overtone & Multiply section (wavefolder) - it's internal routing only - and the Slope section has a single patch point for two different knobs, so you can't control them with CV independently. So you don't necessarily have the ability to route things any way you want.
Awesome, I will be getting the full version in the next few days. Love the sounds you have made on the video, excited to try this out in my music. Thank you, all your hard work is very much appreciated.
"Taco Bell Diarrhea bass" is now permanently affixed in the Synth Lexicon. Congratulations, sir.

Thanks...enjoying your new patch (and others). Your timing with this is great. After I rebuilt my studio (in part thanks to your video), I spent the day playing with my Voltage Modular VST. I know little (really nothing) about mod synths, but after several hours of digging into the plugin, I decided it is time to add some hardware to the my mix. The West Pest looks like an interesting intro as I dig the additive sound. Thanks for all your great content and inspiration, and hope you survive the Swift.
Plugging these things into each other sounds amazing 😉

finally...as a composer for 9 years now, with no real knowledge about analog and semi modular synths, this is the first video I really learned something from and made it more understandable for me.
I just recently started my hardware synth journey with the purchase of a Sculpt se. After watching this video I realize I'm going to need more credit cards! Amazing video. A great primer on semi-modular synthesis.
Thanks! Cant wait to dig in

Always good to have a knife around just incase someone breaks in during your synth jam session
Ok... this is so good. I'm trying to learn modular (or semi-modular). Your descriptions and demonstrations are so helpful! I do have to say... I also got in trouble for not liking T Swift's new jams, and I made the mistake of telling my wife "I like what she's trying, but I follow KZread artists who do it so much better".
I got a West Pest yesterday, during my livestream much impressed

As always, appreciate your demo videos. Intrigued with the West Pest, am inclined to get one of these, could a be good inclusion into my already existing menagerie of other analog synth engines (Behringer Neutron, Crave, Pro-1, and K-2) . . . and of course, will check out Malevolence.
West Pest seems amazing!
my favorite 3 things about modular synth: - the sound. it gets so raw, unique, wild, special - the uniqueness. true, a lot of basic patches have much in common. but as soon as you start stacking decisions on each other, the complexity of the patch leads to unique places very quickly - virtuosity is cerebral rather physical. everything in modular synthesis occurs in your mind. how fast you can move your hands or how accurately you can place your fingers is not very relevant. I love playing classical piano and trying to shred an electric guitar, but with modular synth the skill is entirely mental. it's a nice change.
I don't know why, but 'patch noodle' made me giggle every time
Awesomeness.
Nice Buck 112 😁
Big Doomy Mick Gordon Taco Bell Diarrhea Bass 😂
Oh shoot. I made a track with just 2 other of your sample libraries. Might as well make one with this.
I got the pwm several weeks ago. I’m still unpacking how I want to patch it for my samples. It’s a beast. It’s like an ms20 on plutonium. Sometimes it tries to chew its own nuts off I think a ytuber said.
These seem really exciting! I'm always scared to start with synths because it sounds like a massive investment.

How much time do you want to spend picking out what to buy, learning new gear, learning why it doesn't do what you wanted, figuring out how to control it all at once, looking at gear you will never own, and on and on. Gear costs money, and the time suck is real as well. The major advantage of hardware is the immediate interface. Get a controller and a midi template, learn it, make music.

Hardware definitely gets expensive after a while but there's something about having an actual physical instrument that to me is just so much more inspiring in the creative process. Luckily these days there's a fair amount of budget friendly gear out there that's really powerful and you're not stuck with just big analog stuff that costs thousands and thousands of dollars.
Encyclopedic knowledge. Comedy gold.

Hello Cameron, thanks for the video! I have one question, how do you know if different semi-modular synths are compatible with each other? Do you spend time testing the voltage outputs, or is it sort of a universal system like Eurorack? The only reason I am asking is because I fried a Moog Werkstatt by running a guitar into a guitar amp and running that signal through the Werkstatt's filter input (I would not recommend doing this). I am worried that if I get another semi-modular synth that I will end up destroying it cause of my experimentation.

@@inn5268 I understand your point but reading the manual would not have prevented me from connecting a guitar amp to the filter. I've tried researching this topic, and it is difficult for me to find information relating to it.

What about this can plugins not do? I remember doing a lot of this as a kid in Reason, or with the Arturia moog modular, or with Reaktor, or u-he zebra, or really any plugin with a mod matrix or virtual modular kind of ecosystem.
@TheSzyko

You can do 99% with only plugins. The workflow is different because you can touch knobs and feel like you ply an instrument. Also hardware inspires you on a different level. Bought the REV2 and did basic patches that are totally different from what I’d do with plugins. It’s just a different way, not necessary to produce good music at all tho.
You don’t need a knife, it’s sound sharp enough! :)
