Your Plans: God's Plans - Timothy Keller [Sermon]

Tim Keller sermons via Gospel in Life: The only way to understand God's plans for us is to see Christ truly and trust him fully. Gods plans for us are not abandoned to fate; our choices matter, and once we have committed entirely to His will, we can receive his guidance humbly and boldly.

I want to give everything but I don’t trust myself to stay focused each day. Old patterns of sin are tough to break. And truthfully I’m such an impulsive mess. I guess my goal should be to slowly shift from my distrust in myself to my trust in God. Through meditation of the scriptures, in prayer. And according to this message from Tim, to do so whether or not guidance is gained.

I have been asking God for healing for almost a year now. I have been feeling like he has been withholding it from me. But what you said really hit me: "At some point, your child is going to look at you and when you withhold something from him or her... when you don't let your child have something that they really want. And when they look at you and they say: "You don't love me." And when that happens... just try not to blow up. You want to say, "How dare you... you have NO IDEA what I have done for you... you have NO IDEA the SACRIFICE, you have NO IDEA of the things i have withheld from myself to raise you... and IF YOU KNEW all that I had done for you, you would NEVER question my motive from withholding that from you. IF YOU KNEW ALL THAT I HAD SACRIFICED FOR YOU, YOU WOULD KNOW THAT I HAVE A LOVING PURPOSE FROM WITHHOLDING THAT FROM YOU."

I understand and have had similar concerns. And I have been with friends of mine who prayed for healing and never healed..they became anxious because they were told I'd they were right with God they would be healed and when it did not happen they were sorrowful because they feared they were separated from God. But remember Paul asked for healing and it did not come but his faith increased. My friend who was not healed...her gentle faithful nature and love healed others including me, healed our spirits.

God's peace is not peaceful God's path is not what we wished for And yet God always knows better And yet God is more just than what any man could be Jesus went to the cross not because it was the easy way out but because it was the hardest way out Nothing will make sense and yet if the HOLY SPIRIT abides in you joy will always fill every part of your soul and every step you make will honour God. The dark pits of life and the storms of life and the crosses we have to bear are all fruitful because we trusted in God. Tim Keller's sermon is so deep in understanding of God's wisdom

Your plans are yours but nothing happens outside of God’s plan. It’s like the duality of light being a partial and a wave. God is a partial and a wave as well. He was man-matter. He is energy-Spirit. We just weren’t granted brains to grasp dualism let alone Trinity. Yet God reins in our lives if we let him. If we obey his leading. The Lord works out everything. I suffered a loss that came out of nowhere. I knew God was in control. I thought God was displeased with me. I thought I had disappointed him, so He took away something I loved. I loved it with my pride. I felt good about myself. Commit your deeds to the Lord and you will make good plans. What you will, how you will, when you will is easy with the heart. It was easy before my loss. It’s harder now. Commit my life to him. I thought I had and yet now it seems really hard. Not complex but difficult. That means gabbing my Bible and opening it regularly. I just can’t seem to since my loss. My reading before feels shallow. I want depth but I don’t know what is stopping me. I am trying to find a new job now. I need God’s guidance in this decision. Yet I run from spending time with him. I know it’s hard for everyone. Things like listening to sermons, Bible on tape, audio Bible, Bible app, are are not the same. They make it easier. I don’t feel God speaking to me that way. I guess I’m mad at him for my loss. I’ve worn the same clothes since Wednesday. I had to change on Wednesday. A kid says you don’t love me if you keep some pleasantness from me. God says you don’t know how I am providing for you. God is providing for me. If you read this pray for me.

It's astounding that a video can have close to 3/4 of a million views and only 153 comments. I'm tempted to be cynical and say it must have been destined to be that way, yet otoh, humans have the choice to comment so what's the deal? I misspelled "deal" and auto-check fixed it. I'm obviously confused. I will re-listen to this sermon and edit this comment accordingly.

Jesus is asleep and we are in the middle of the storm if his disciples had not awakened him what would have happened? The storm would probably have continued but we would have navigated our way out . God is always the way out but we sometimes life's burdens are too large and we need to rest in the Lord.

In a nutshell: God helps those that help themselves. That popular aphorism is not a scripture, but is a distillation of this helpful sermon. You have to make the best choices possible in your limited wisdom, and trust God to work it out according to His plan.

Grieve as you need to, but grieve in God’s presence. Come to Him with the pain. Tim Keller’s series on Jonah speaks a bit about how to do this (e.g. Love Beneath the Waves).

Additionally, the Book of Common prayer is something Tim Keller uses to pray the entire Psalms every month. His sermons on prayer are helpful too. I’ve also found the Centering Prayer method by Thomas Merton extremely helpful for changing my prayer life. There’s a nice free app called Centering Prayer that guides you through how to do it. I hope you find what you need ❤

It's not really you deciding, even though it seems that way. God is the one using you and your imagined "free will." So whatever you do, is actually God's will. You cannot do the "wrong thing." People who say we have free will are deluded. So you can be happy & confident that God is in control of your will. Any anxiety/confusion you might have is the result of that imagined "free will" b.s. lol

"and once we have committed entirely to His will, we can receive his guidance humbly and boldly." So wait, what about the Lord? Are you not saying that you are saved by grace? You have to make the chice to fallow and obey the commentment, right for the rest of your life?

  • @aiyer777

+Jaime Merino I think that whole grace/obedience conflict is a really tough one to sort out, and I'm certainly working on it myself! Here's how I think it works though...at least from what I understand. So first, I think we are saved by grace, and I don't think the issue of committing to his will (and the difficulties we often face in doing that!) take away from the assured salvation. I also think it's kind of like if someone were guiding you along the path to get to a destination. The person holds your hand and is walking you along the way no matter what. The thing is, I think closing yourself off is sort of like wearing gloves and looking down; you don't really see the whole path and you can't feel the guiding arm, and sometimes it's really easy to trip along the way (you'll be helped up again...). However, if we allow the gloves to come off, and we allow our eyes to look at the person who is guiding us (i.e. Jesus), we can walk the path with more assurance and understanding (boldness), and also be able to appreciate the extent to which we cannot navigate without our Guide (humility).

He's not talking about being saved. He's talking about the commitment you have to make to continue your walk with Him even after your saved. You don't just sit back and kick it after you realize and accept that you've been saved by grace. If you've truly accepted Him then you're a new creation with a new heart that will convict you continually towards the image of Christ until the day you die.

32:02 I was disappointed that Tim regards "this peace thing" as mere emotion. It's a thing of the spirit, not the soul, I'm sure. Deception is very possible, but I still believe in the arbiter (literal translation) of Colossians 3:15.

Did God plan all the wrong choices that I made and also my losses? Not sure His involvement, but I lost all my investments and my plans for a greater life free from 9-5 rat race. I failed and now I am depressed. Did God plan/ordain everything? Good n bad?

  • @micahmiss

No, he did not. What Tim Keller is saying, is "in the end" God weaves all your poor/bad decisions into His perfect plan. He takes what we stuff up in our disobedience or ignorance and He still manages to make it all work for the good of those who love Him, and to establish His Kingdom. We are still responsible for our own decisions, thoughts and actions but He, being the Creator of the entire universe, has the power and the ability, and being unhindered by linear timelines, to still establish His perfect will despite our best/worst efforts. It's quite mind blowing. If you lost everything due to decisions you made, then maybe go back to a place where you involve God in all your decisions. He knows exactly what will bring you the most peace, the most happiness in life. And it certainly isn't to not work and vacation permanently - even when He created the earth perfectly and Adam in it, in His perfect plan Adam was a gardener, working and taking care of everything, not idling away the time vacationing. God's perfect plan involves us working. But anyway, "losing everything" might have been God's way of saving you. Chat to Him about it.

Micah Thanks. I still do not know. This is this man's opinion. Some scriptures seem to teach that everything we do was ordained by God. I was not going to vacation all day, lol. Just escape the 9-5. Still do photography and also be a landlord. That's still work. I just hate dragging to a job i hate. My life is bad now. I didn't realize how reliant i was on money. Depression sucks. I have no motivation anymore. I failed by trusting the wrong people. I should've invested elsewhere. Bad choice.

Mr. C, may be you could and try see it this way. The larger scheme of things, where God ties in all our decisions; good, bad and the indecisions in response to our circumstances - to mold us. Maybe if we picture of clay in the hands of the Potter. None on which are easy on the clay/or Joseph the example from the sermon. But then maybe it was essential for a truly gifted/ competent person to be stay humble/willing/wise/decisive/... while shouldering the responsibility of Egypt, while all glory belonging only to God?

Mr. C, I am sorry you are feeling like that. The greatest "successes" of this world are failures too, in something or a lot of things. They just do a good job at hiding it or showing that it does not affect them. Try and focus on all the good that you have been blessed with. Hope you can speak to some mature person face to face, as is said "A problem shared is a problem halved" :)

At the end of the day you're another day older And that's all you can say for the life of the poor It's a struggle, it's a war And there's nothing that anyone's giving One more day standing about, what is it for? One day less to be living. At the end of the day you're another day colder And the shirt on your back doesn't keep out the chill And the righteous hurry past They don't hear the little ones crying And the plague is coming on fast, ready to kill One day nearer to dying! At the end of the day there's another day dawning And the sun in the morning is waiting to rise Like the waves crash on the sand Like a storm that'll break any second There's a hunger in the land There's a reckoning still to be reckoned and There's gonna be hell to pay At the end of the day! why would you not want to get out of bed if you think your future depends on your actions and those made by people around you? if you want to live a full and amazing life, I believe its the opposite...you will never want to sleep because you are trying to build the best life for yourself now and for the future. If this sermon is true...God is truly evil...millions of people living in pain and sickness, millions homeless, millions without food and water. That is Gods plan for them? A lifetime of pain and hardship based mostly on where you were born or who your parents are or arent. Seems like Satan and God are very similar/could be the same

Well, if there is no God and no plan, what does it change fore those millions of people on behalf of whom you are talking? They are still there, facing a lifetime of pain and hardship based mostly on where they were born or who their parents are or aren't. So there they are, sick, in pain, homeless, without food, in slavery, crippled and their lives depend on their actions.. couldn't it be that with this perspective of life without a grander narrative and a hope most of them sooner or later would not want to get out of bed (if they had one)?
