    On the flip side of what you are saying about saturation in a large amount making the low end get lost. I often give the advice to people who mix too dark, that if they add subtle saturation to a bunch of stuff in stages across the individual channels, the groups and the mix bus, they can subtly brighten up their mixes without touching an EQ (ofc they would still want to EQ as well, but just the fact that you can get extra brightness without using one is my point ;)).

    Regarding compression - one thing to look out for is the input gain into the compressor. I had that experience where I was listening to some test masters of my own work and I noticed this weird pumping. Turns out that my mixdown was hotter than I thought. I just turned it down by about 3dB and the compressor was reacting in a much more pleasing and musical way than before. Regarding sibilance - the other problem would be in giving a vocalist a lisp. That said, I get it =]

    Hey! Loving your videos, I was wondering if you had any tips for this weird issue I've been having. I was mixing my track and I noticed that the drop of my reference, even when gain matched to be the same amount of lufs as the drop of my mix, sounded noticeably louder despite being the same short term LUFS. Do you have any recommended videos of yours that cover this and if not would you be open to making a video or two on this subject? I've seen videos on perceived loudness on KZread but often times it'll just be some tips and tricks that usually increase the LUFS by a noticeable amount. The song I was referencing was the supersonic remix by noisia and skrillex.

    If I have anything that bothers me when I listen to new mixes/masters, it's bad compression (which I get because mixing wise I think compression was the last process I really understood, years after EQ, levels, panning, saturation, reverb/FX, and everything else). But now that I *get* it and I know what I like, when I hear compression that doesn't fit with a song, or its overdone, or its underdone (I listen to a lot of Jazz and I think there's some styles that honestly could use some compression, especially when I'm trying to listen in my car) it just makes me a little sad.

  • @simonvandenheever8571

    @simonvandenheever8571

    6 ай бұрын

    Fair point, I know tons of EDM producers that have very little on their master bus and their stuff sounds excellent (maybe just a soft clipper) that being said there is managing your true peak which I think is technically possible through bus limiting but is a tremendous headache compared to throwing on a pro-L and just clicking one button, another would be dithering which is literally impossible to do on anything but your final bounce or master.

    Not much theoretically it’s just another channel of audio. You can do everything on a mix bus you could do in mastering. Probably one thing you could do in mixing you couldn’t do in mastering is elect a particular signal to sidechain your processors on the mix bus!

    I've noticed there seems to be alot of issues with stereo imaging, alot of the times I notice songs that are either far too narrow or far too wide but it's artificially wide where theres a hole in the centre, granted this is more found in lesser known records but I find this alot in the more rap, hip hop styles.

    Stereo widener abuse. People don’t know when to stop or not to use them at all. They can be addictive because they make such a big change as well as make things sound less muddy sometimes…but as you said you get a big gaping home in the middle with the sides coming out 3D. Can work for some material

    @@panorama_mastering yeah, all of the latest really well known stuff rarely suffers from this issue but I see it in productions that may not have the budget for top teir quality control or maybe even self produced, it's unfortunate becuase the music would be great if it wasn't for that. also off topic but would you be able to go into more detail on the kelvin tone shaper and its applications, you've done videos for pretty much all of the tone projects stuff it's just I'd love to get more to grips with it myself and I think it could be useful for others too, especialy when you've spoken in the past about using saturation more as a tone control rather than just colour.

    Not specifically master related but mostly mix related. I hate these days when a mix sounds overly soothed. Prime example is Sabrina Carpenters Espresso. If you push soothe too hard all your high mids loose all their charecter and worst case the mix sounds like a bad quality mp3 because you loose so much Information from the extreme filtering. I feel like mixes have become a lot more mid-foreward these days because of the way we can control them now. But most of the time they just start sounding dull but harsh at the same time.
